The UA-cam algorithm led me to this channel and I got hooked. You guys have inspired me to pick up my violin that has been sitting unused for years at my parents' house. When I moved out for post-secondary, I didn't want to disturb my new neighbours and just stopped playing. I got it tuned up, and then I muddled through some scales, twinkle twinkle, hot cross buns, and then butchered happy birthday. I guess I'm going to have to practice a bit before I move on to any Paganini.
Sonorous expertise (Eddy) and Mechanical expertise (Brett) No wonder the TwoSet duo get along so effortlessly from a musical standpoint, these two elements are the fundamental blocks for making music at all
I like how Brett gives honest critiques. His praise isn’t empty because he notes the areas that need further work or are not as good as they could be, and where improvement could be made. So when he then says this or that was good, or he was impressed, it really means something. Good enough to deserve a bubble tea!
I remember watching all of them. I believe he took them down because he said he doesn't align with them anymore or doesn't believe in those methods anymore and doesn't want to spread it around when there are better ways of approaching stuff now. However, I would love to see what has changed and why he feels that way about it now.
In my perfect world, Brett and Eddie put out a video playlist on playing violin, and also for just general musicality. But also, maybe with the fandom have compositions put into a book with increasing difficulty of fan, made music that they could share in their site or some thing. And they could teach their own TwoSet course.
I feel like I'm holding my breath when he played for Brett. You want Eddy to do well after all that effort. I think he accomplished it and I'm so glad he took us along for the ride
10:45 omg, I lost it at the cricket sounds 🤣 loving their dynamics with each other; Eddy trying his hardest to impress Brett and Brett being a supportive friend (after realizing what this was all about) 🤣
Eddy, your wrist is a little too low when you start the upbow staccato. If your wrist is low in comparison with your fingers, your fingers have no space to impulse the stroke upwards. Upbow staccato is primarily centred around the fingers and thumb as these are the only muscles sensitive enough to do the movement. By way of preparing for your upbow staccato run, drop your fingers in relation to your wrist, then martellato up. As you work up proficiency, you can upgrade martellato for a true flying stroke, then add speed. Notice when you were doing it at the end of your 7 days, your wrist was higher compared to when you started, but it was still lower than it should be for full efficiency.
Well dang it. My teacher - who famously had a VERY fluid and relaxed wrist - told me to tighten things up for that passage, then just kinda "think the Minuet in G" (quote from "The Music Man") if you will. Not helpful. Your detailed explanation makes me wish I was that age again instead of closer to the end, and certainly no longer needing to learn this stroke.
You seriously think that the Two Set need an advice about staccato from an amateur? they know, they just make content. By the way, there are different ways to do staccato, actually there are better ones than what you describe.
@@MishaSkripach God your comment projects so much devoted two set worshipping staunch defender energy. Get a grip on that superiority complex ya little snob... Literally the embodiment of the classical music stereotype for condescension.
I feel so relieved that upbow staccato is so difficult even for professional violinists! Them being real and honest is one of the many reasons I love twoset!
Yes, it was really fun and helpful. Eddy totally reminds me of what I probably look like when I practice but much better. Everything from shaking the arm out to looking at the reflection in the window to going "blah" when you sound terrible just really hit home for me in a hilarious way.
So good how humble they are to not hide their progress or what they can‘t do yet. Love your authenticity. Actually I‘d really love to see more practice videos!
For some reason, I kept hearing Eddy saying "violin" as "violent" so it sounded like he said he was going to learn an "incredibly difficult violent technique"
I would love to see more videos of you guys practicing and learning and trying to get better. As a musician, I think everyone is able to relate to that feeling of personal improvement. Love to see more of this in the future
Congrats Eddy for this huge improvement! How about a follow-up with Brett explaining the phyics of flying upbow staccato and how to make it fiery? I'm not sure I know more about how to actually tackle upbow staccato after the video. I've been trying what Eddy did - with a totally different result.
As someone who is simultaneously beginning medical school and learning Rhapsody in Blue on piano, this made me so energized. Way to go Eddi, but that's all I'm going to say because I gotta go practice (and study)!
this format is great, i enjoyed it so much!!! as we got to the end i was like "omg hope the performance is for brett": i was NOT disappointed! (his blank face the first time through was hilarious too)
I not only see the process of myself trying to play up-bow Staccato and fail/lose patient and confidence, but also I see a bit of young Eddy in the (very much missed) Eddy Chen UA-cam Channel!! Really love the way Eddy talks when he is talking about violin and classical music!!
One of the important things from this vid for me: never stop practicing even after playing an instrument for years. Thanks u guys for making such high quality content ❤
That comment about his *behind* was WAYY too relatable. When you are practicing or performing with intensity, you can get so randomly tensed up anywhere except your hands and arms. 10/10 moment
i really appreciate you uploading this. the first piece that forced me to really work on this technique was the 1st movement of Seitz's student concerto no. 3, but i still end up fudging it half the time. it was encouraging to see an extremely skilled violinist experience the same types of issues i've dealt with when doing this technique (e.g., wanting to tense the right arm, inconsistent pressure when moving up the bow, left wrist tension, etc.), and then getting to see your approach to isolating the problems and applying targeted exercises for improvement. going out of your way to use performance as a test is an underrated point too. i'm still at the "sometimes i get it and go 'wooo!' and smile" phase, and it made me smile seeing you do the same thing each time you got it, as well as when you got it while performing for brett. great stuff! :))

The most incomprehensible thing to me about this video is the fact that Eddy usually practises without sheet music. Where does he get that kind of confidence?
The great thing about your videos is that you don't need to be a classical musician to enjoy them. I'm self taught piano and have found my new favorite show. Thanks!!!
Great playing, Eddy! Even though I'm a clarinet player, I admire your skill and hard work. Though in my school band, we mostly play Wind Band pieces, I've gotten into classical because of you two & Your Lie in April. Wen I hear Introduction and Rondo Capprissico, I can't help but think of Kaori and Kousei playing together. Thank you, Brett and Eddy, for making music fun!
This is like training your 4th and 5th finger muscles to do trills and play the melody with your 1st on the piano version of La Campanella near the cadenza. Absolute torture, especially when the trills start to shift down right after 😭.

Isn't learning this technique from Brett in the first place will avoid a lot of frustration along the way? 😱 I'm impressed by your determination, Eddy. I can't last a day, let alone a week of learning new things on my own like you do. 🥴 So, congrats on that! 😁👍

He actually got pretty good at it after spending three months trying to learn that Paganini piece ZiYu performed. I think video called Learning Most Difficult Violin Piece or something like that.
I REALLY liked this video. Even with slow, careful honed practice, there are times a player can feel immobile in their progress. We all have our technique Achilles heels. To see Eddy's dedication ironing out a difficult problem area, to see that much of an improvement in only a week, is inspiring and invigorating. After laughing out loud at Brett's confused reaction, I loved his very classical music culture response: providing support and encouragement while giving advice for the next level up. I would love to see more videos like this, though I don't expect it, as I acknowledge it's time-consuming. This style of video is so attuned to the work it takes for musical improvement. And again, that result was impressive in that time window. I love seeing you boys kick butt, level up, and kick even more butt!
