  • Finally wrapping up the ash milling videos. Captured all but the last few logs. This lumber is amazing, and will make some nice projects in the future. Possibly some flooring for a future home addition.

    A Brit here living in Crete (Greece) for the last16 years. I really enjoy your videos as I was in the cabinet making trade for 12 years in the UK. One thing worries me and that is Deb not wearing a mask in that dusty air. I've had a persistent cough for over 3 years which the hospital say is due to sawdust over 45 years ago. While wearing a mask does not help the videos, I do worry about her health much later in life. Had friends at Wysox in northern PA that I used to visit until I got too old to travel. Nice countryside in PA. Good work.

      Hello Maurice, and welcome to the mill. That has all change for Deb. I was trying to talk her into the mask for some time. I was finally able to convince her to wear a mask. She had been staying out of the dusty air for the most part, but I wasn't happy about it. Glad she has changed her mind.

    I see tons of fallen giant hardwood down in forests, or even cut by public forest management and let to rot and inaccessible from roads. I understand in the old days they used to have oxens to pull logs out of forests and difficult terrain although that could be very dangerous on sloped terrain or derricks. I sometimes just stop at these fallen massive logs and can't believe they'll just stay there and rot.

    • @IronOakSawmill
      @IronOakSawmill  3 роки тому

      Hello Eric. We see the same thing around here in our county and state parks. These giant succumb to storm winds or simple just age, and rather than preserve them in lumber, they are left to rot. I realize that it is nature, but I would rather see the tree live on in beautiful pieces of furniture, and continue to be enjoyed by so many.

    • @ericastier1646
      @ericastier1646 3 роки тому +1

      @@IronOakSawmill Thanks for the answer, Yes, although to be fair, rotting logs serve a very beneficial natural purpose in feeding the forest food pyramid and keeping it healthy from which insects, birds and other plants feed on, but where i live i see sufficient smaller rotting logs serving that purpose just fine so those prime fallen big hardwood trees should be made into timber for manufacturing prime furniture. I cannot help but think how i would get them out of the forest and to my sawmill. Even though i don't have one yet. hahaha

    Do you find that the balance in the saw head, as you enter the log, makes the lumber have an inconsistent thickness throughout the length of the board?

    • @IronOakSawmill
      @IronOakSawmill  4 роки тому +1

      Hello, and thank you for your question. Just to clarify, do you mean balance, or bounce?
      The cantilever design has worked for decades now, and is well proven. They have the balance down very well.
      If you are referring to bounce, there is a tiny bit when first engaging the blade, but it settles down quickly. I could delay the start of the cut for a second or 2, possibly, to allow it to stop. Either way, the cut is excellent with the Wood Mizer.

    • @Mark-dp3zf
      @Mark-dp3zf 4 роки тому +1

      Iron & Oak Sawmill Yes, I meant bounce. I am looking at purchasing the LT35 probably within the next month. I started with a Norwood Lumbermate 2000 (Manuel) and am looking to go hydraulic. Do you have the fine adjustable jacks or stock jacks on yours?

      Hello Casey, and welcome to the mill.
      We got that blade at one of the big box stores. It's a drywall knife, but works great for cleaning the sawdust off the lumber and slabs. We have high iron content in the water around here, and the wet sawdust can stain the wood, so we like to make sure that doesn't happen.
