Eric Clapton told a story about SRV embarrassing him and some other big dogs of the six strings industry on a cheap studio guitar after Stevie had handed over his Fender Strat to Clapton to try it out. It was the first time they had ever met :)
Bro, let me tell you a TRUE story about Stevie Ray Vaughan: In an interview years ago, the great guitarist Eric Clapton said the following: "Our manager & promoters selected Stevie Ray Vaughan to open for US on our concert tour. During our very fist show, I was standing at the side of the stage to watch Stevie play for the very first time, to see what "all the fuss was about"......and after Stevie was done playing his set, I was AFRAID to get on the stage to do MY show, because Stevie put me to shame. The man did EVERYTHING there is to do with a guitar, and HOW was I going to top THAT"........END QUOTE.
Heck, I went to a Jimi Hendrix concert back in 74. Tower of Power came on first and blew the audience away. We kept on wanting more and they played extra. Im pretty sure Hendrix felt uneasy about coming on stage. Voodoo Child is a Hendrix song and SRV kills it. There is no better.
Clapton was absolutely correct, and he is a gentleman and a tru artist himself for recognizing and acknowledging his craft. I am sure Stevie had the same mutual honor and respect for Clapton. True class acts!
I don't think we will ever see a guitarist with the same tone as SRV again. He had so much feel with super heavy gauge strings, you can hear the strings fighting him and screaming out in pain. This is pure bliss for me.
I would like to believe that Stevie made Jimi very very proud. Stevie said he was having problems with a section of Voodoo Child. One night Jimi came to him in a dream and taught him to play the section he was struggling with. I can't even imagine the magic they are making, wherever they are now!
Stan the Man If you search "SRV compared to Hendrix" you'll find the interview. I could have swore he said something about Hendrix teaching him something about Voodoo Child. Guess I was wrong lol. Still a cool little interview to watch regardless!
Timothy Howard I know exactly which one you’re talking about (I think)! is it the one where he almost takes offense at the interviewer saying people are comparing him to Hendrix? Replied with something along the lines of “there’ll never be another Hendrix”
Jimmy was the same way. When Dick Cavett called Jimmy the greatest guitarist in the world he got all shy and said "Maybe the greatest guitarist in this chair, how about that?"
You're right Texas Magnolia. Stevie was someone I looked to for style and attitude as far as my guitar playing. I will never hold a candle to what he gave to Texas blues or his artistic ability with guitar, but he certainly was an influence. I didn't know him but one of my buddies did along with Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, and Doyle Bramhall. What you say is exactly what they have said.

It wasn't just in his fingertips. It was in his blood, his bones, and his soul. There have been maybe a handful of players in his league in history. RIP, guitar genious.
I remember Eric Clapton once commented that when SRV was his opening act back in the day. That after watching Stevie play his set several nights in a row, reluctantly he had to stop watching him, even though he enjoyed it very much. Clapton commented that it was because as he watched Stevie perform, he soon realized that no matter what song he was playing, he never missed a note, improvised flawlessly and was never "lost" at any time during a solo. Clapton understood that he could not always say the same for himself, and admitted it was intimidating and difficult to follow SRV knowing this.

My introduction to SRV was in 1982 in Houston Texas. A friend kicked my door in, dragged my ass to Fitzgeralds in the Heights on a Sunday afternoon. Wouldn't tell me who, what, or anything. He paid the 2 dollar cover charge. We got our seats, a skinny kid wandered onto the stage and said, "Hi y'all' and started to play, by the 3rd note my jaw was on the ground. Have seen Stevie live 6 times. Each time was a revelation in music. I am glad you got to see his videos, but Brother, ain't nuthin' like SRV and Double Trouble Live!!!!!
I won tickets to a Joe Cocker concert on the radio. I was STOKED because Cocker was ON FIRE at the time. Couldn't wait. I asked a friend about the other act I'd be seeing that night. "Oh, he's a blues guy. GREAT guitar player. You'll like him." They were switching off Opener/Closer on the tour. On this night, Cocker went first... and he was like 3x better than I expected. And my expectations were HIGH. Then SRV and Double Trouble came out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLEW! MY! MIND!!
@Rich Sackett... FYI, SRV died, has been dead since August 27th 1990. That's 29 years ago this August 27th 2019. You're statement does not make any sense. Other than the fact, that he was a great guitar player/musician. And by the way, this performance, with SRV wearing the blue Kimono was in 1983 (you are right about this fact) on Austin City Limits. I saw Stevie Ray and DT play on a few occasions, although, not on Austin City Limits.
In case you didn't know.....SRV was the younger brother of the also legendary Jimmy Vaughn, guitarist for The Fabulous Thunderbirds. They were super-tight as brothers. You can see some amazing videos on YT of those two brothers playing together on stage. Incredible stuff.
SRV was a self taught guitar player. He used to hang around the blues club when he was young. He met and played with some of the greatest R & B cats of all time!!! I always have been a big fan of SRV! One of the top three best guitar players in the world to this day! Thanks coach!! PLEASE react to more of SRV!!
SRV was part of the Oak Cliff, TX brigade. Check out Rocky Athas. A friend of SRV and a fantastic guitar player in his own right. Those were the days around Dallas, TX. Rocky Athas, SRV, Jimi Vaughn, John Nitzinger, Point Blank, Steve Miller and so many more. The clubs were always jumping.
Stevie Ray Vaughn's legend will never be touched. What he did was unreal. Here played guitar like it was a part of him. They were one entity, it's sad to say that kind of love and devotion to one's art is so hard to come by these days. All the old school jammers are retiring and pushing away.
SRV smiles everytime someone enjoys watching this video.! Shaq, I'm happy you forgot about us for a minute...that was a beautiful reaction, you weren't the only one lost in the moment.
I always find it funny when people declare who the best guitar player is. It is like cars, some love Ford, Some Chevy, Some Mercedes, Some Porsche. All are great, but it is subjective. I can tell you that there has never been another Stevie, and a lot of wannabe Hendrix’s. Maybe that’s because Hendrix was a revolutionary, and SRV was perfection. No need to improve on it! The day SRV died, we closed the music store I worked at. We cried, then listened to his music for hours. Keep open minded, and our limits are boundless! You are kinda the gateway for a lot of people, as they look to you for music ideas. Love your reactions Professor!
SRV played with especially thick guitar strings that were rough on his fingertips. His wife would try to get him to switch because they made his fingers bleed sometimes, but he loved the sound they made.
That's Tommy Shannon on bass, and Chris "Whipper" Layton on drums. One of the most badass rhythm sections in rock/blues history. They both still live in Austin and still play, especially Chris. Just talked to him when he played with Sue Foley at Antone's Record Store the other day.
so amazing, just like Jimmy, passed after everyone already knew they were great, the fact that we could have hundreds of their songs instead of just several albums, fast living kills
nah some people are just as good if not better,. we all stand on the shoulders of giants. BB, Jimmy page, Dimebag, Santana, Jeff beck, Jimi, Slash, Frank Zappa... hard to say who is the best. Ritchie Blackmore is a god... Really hard.
I remember the day Stevie accident happened. People actually took off work to mourn. There was a construction company that gave everybody the day off. I was 17 back then and remember it very well. Stevie was definitely one of a kind. He is still missed greatly.
Dude your versatility sets the bar for music reviews ! You go it all bro . Thanks for all the great videos . You always got me laughing . Ima keep dropin these likes 👍
Stevie was humble about his God-given talents. He always gave respect to those blues pioneers who came before him, but make no mistake - he was one of a kind.
Can you just imagine how funky....greazy....F'n bodacious it would have been if Mr Hendrix and Mr Vaughn could have jammed together.....I figure Mr Hendrix had to leave here so Mr Vaughn could arrive...... the Earth is just not ready for those two cats to be running together...... folks in the audience would be just exploding......
SRV the best blues player. Hendrix girlfriend took his money. On the album cover of SRV's albums any money made on a Hendrix cover he sent to his family.
I almost named my first born after him!!! I was so devastated when he left us. So much potential. Don’t think there will ever be another like him. Rest In Peace 4-Eva, Stevie! Heaven has the best band ever!
I grew up on both,,,,NO ONE played the guitar like Jimi for years before him or years after him UNTIL SRV came along and blew everybody out the water. Jimi revolutionized guitar playing, Steven flew away with it. Check out ‘Life without you’ Live at Montreux. Amazing talent gone but never forgotten
Stevie was obsessed with guitars. He first played a guitar at age 7. His early teens he was sneaking into clubs to play guitar, and dropped out of school at age 16. People have said he constantly had a guitar in his hands. He plays the guitar more than he slept 365 days a year. Hard hard work and monstrous amount of talent is how he got so good.
Decades and decades of practice his brother Jimmy from the fabulous Thunderbirds said when they were kids he would play tell his calluses would shred off his fingers he would Crazy Glue them back on and keep playing that's how you get good like that
When the VHS came out I should have bought 10 of them. I wore mine out. The last time it finally died in the middle of "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Live at the El Mocambo is the best!
I complained to my guitar teacher when I was younger that my hands just cant do this. He said no ones hands are supposed to do this, its hard work and muscle memory. This was the best motivation I got when I was first beginning guitar. 20 years later I'm glad I never gave up.
Stevie Ray Vaughn is definitely the best guitarist ever, in my opinion. It’s music so obvious not everyone will agree. But nobody can deny the man had legendary skill
Airehcaz legendary skill , but strictly a blues player . I prefer a more diverse player like Page. Vaughn is absolutely amazing , I’m sure if he was still here he would have branched out a bit. Who knows what incredible new music we missed out on.
Jimi and Stevie, They both changed guitar playing in their own unique ways. Like a fellow musician once said, It's not a competition, it's about enjoying the ride.
Aww yeah you watched it!!! True greatness right?!??!SRV was just on a whole other level!!! Incredible talent!! He loved Hendrix, covered his stuff all the time!
Fingers and Toes! He was the master of the wah-wah pedal. I was lucky enough to see Stevie live, and he really was this awesome. Thanks for the perfect reaction. Brought back lots of great memories. ✌️
I love Stevie. One of the best, in my opinion. Theres a documentary on his life on here that's a great watch. So sad how his life was cut so short at 35 😣
Yes, and as a kid who idolized Jimi Hendrix I can say this is completely true! Jimi Hendrix was greatness but Stevie Ray Vaughan was out of this world!!! Anyone who's ever tried to pick up a guitar and learn to play and actually followed through with learning knows this to be true!!!
I'm sure the guy who invented the pizza wasn't the world's greatest pizza maker LOL😂😂😂😂 seriously anyone who has an ear for music, or actually plays and can get beyond the Mystique of Jimi Hendrix knows this to be 1000% accurate!!! So let me just say this before I learned how to play the guitar I was impressed with Jimi Hendrix after I learned how to play the guitar I was impressed with Stevie Ray Vaughan!!!
Studio or live SRV was one of the best. Probably the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place. However, you can’t really compare SRV and JIMI to each other. That’s just unfair, 2 completely different styles. Both goats though.
@@spiderbaby420 if you think you hate that, try being old enough to go see him on his final tour, with two dates within an hour and a half of your house, and saying to yourself, "Well, now that he's clean and sober, I'm sure he'll be around for a long time. In case you didn't know.....SRV was the younger brother of the also legendary Jimmy Vaughn, guitarist for The Fabulous Thunderbirds. They were super-tight as brothers. You can see some amazing videos on YT of those two brothers playing together on stage. Incredible stuff.
Poetry in motion. I never get sick of watching him. He was simply born this way. God gifted period.
JJ the only artist that you can click on any video and its great. No need to give suggestions. Can’t do that with anyone else.
Watch Zakk Wilde's voodoo child live tribute to Jimmy! You will be mind blown! Especially if you play like I do! You will be shocked by his ability
Going to check it out. I followed SV and Jimmie from early on...I’m a bit bias.
If you like stevie then check out phillip sayce, he's THE modern day stevie ray Vaughan but takes it even further imo
He loved and admired Jimmy allot. Also he owned one of Jimmy's wah pedals. And used it religiously.
Owned a guitar as well
Stevie Ray Vaughn's legend will never be touched.
You have to experience Stevie Ray Vaughan & Johnny Copeland doing “Tin Pan Alley”. Gives me goosebumps every time.
Hell yes. Johnny's velvety voice and his smooth playing were a great contrast to SRV's style. Completely different but awesome in combination.
That performance has so much feel and soul
💕 💞 💓 💗 💖
Doc Jones another must see.
The sounds he makes with his guitar is the voice of God.. as far as I'm concerned.. RIP SRV! The greatest!
I don’t think anyone is being literal man. It just means they like him. We all know a statement like that is 100% subjective.
SRV played with especially thick guitar strings that were rough on his fingertips. His wife would try to get him to switch because they made his fingers bleed sometimes, but he loved the sound they made.
Thisold Hatte he also tuned his guitar a half step down
Fun fact: SRV actually made a deal with the Devil. The Devil got guitar lessons. People are still trying out what SRV got in return...
this is some funny shit. maybe he bought back robert johnsons soul for him.
Legend has it that the devil gave him a new string since he broke his while teaching him
I don't think rest of his band gets enough credit. Everything is on point and that bass is god damn FILTHY.
How can one be so clean yet so filthy at once its unmatched
@@eliasdaw5088 it's almost a paradox haha
double trouble was awesome
That's Tommy Shannon on bass, and Chris "Whipper" Layton on drums. One of the most badass rhythm sections in rock/blues history. They both still live in Austin and still play, especially Chris. Just talked to him when he played with Sue Foley at Antone's Record Store the other day.
The Bass player was Tommy ‘Slut’ Shannon, Slut is the name he answered to.
"How the Hell is he doing that!'!" That's the Magic of SRV, my friend!
Heaven gave it to him. Climax ✨💜✨🎤🎶💋
I have the same question. Hey he skipped that gene in me to Shaq.
It was actually a wah pedal but ok
Stevie Ray Vaughan popped my concert cherry....I was like 10 or 11 and even then knew I was witnessing greatness. 🙏🏻
Goddamn!! That boy could tear it up! The things he could’ve done? We’re left to wonder... He is missed.
so amazing, just like Jimmy, passed after everyone already knew they were great, the fact that we could have hundreds of their songs instead of just several albums, fast living kills
nah dude, you were 100% correct. SRV was, is, and will always be the absolute GOAT of guitar players.
AMEN 2 THAT SRV WAS AND STILL THE GOAT HANDS DOWN
nah some people are just as good if not better,. we all stand on the shoulders of giants. BB, Jimmy page, Dimebag, Santana, Jeff beck, Jimi, Slash, Frank Zappa... hard to say who is the best. Ritchie Blackmore is a god... Really hard.
Jimmy was great no doubt buy Stevie was a guitar master
@@steveandrushko75 Jimmy page is no joke. He could play as good as both of them.
@@pokerman9108 I agree.. Jimmy Page is.. no joke the man rocks on guitar
I remember the day Stevie accident happened. People actually took off work to mourn. There was a construction company that gave everybody the day off. I was 17 back then and remember it very well. Stevie was definitely one of a kind. He is still missed greatly.
I was fortunate enough to be able to see Stevie play live five times each time it was like a religious experience
Life By The Drop is one of my favorites from SRV. And me and my mom used to dance to Pride and Joy when I was little. 💕
That song made me cry after a friend died DWI style
My favorite too. Only one negative....no where near long enough...
That's a beautiful memory.
you have to actually "watch" Stevie just listening isn't enough, he was a musical warlock 🤘🏼
MrsPg 100%
SRV... the best guitarist there ever was and ever will be. RIP.
False. He was definitely great, but not the greatest. Ever heard yngwie malmsteen? If not, you re welcome.
Joshua Traffanstedt yngwie? He’s boring and has no originality how can you say he is better than people like hendrix, page, srv, and clapton?
I think SRV is the best, too....ever!!
That was very good, and accurate
I agree the ER would be full.
That would have been epic.
That shit would have been legendary!
gyleake can only dream it 😳😢
SRV the best blues player.
Apples and Oranges. Hendrix was iconic and a major influence of SRV, but the student became the master far surpassing Hendrix.
Amen
Well, he had about 20 years on him. Think what Jimi could have done if he’d had more time,
Maybe
Hendrix did the ungracious thing and died on us. He would have loved SRV. It's worth noting that SRV also died before his time.
@@dreamweaver1603 Think what Stevie would be like today...........
Stevie Ray Vaughan was 35 when he died; so sad! Def. did justice to this great Jimi Hendrix song.
It was the week I started my freshman year of college. Got the news on a Tuesday. I will never forget. I'm still heartbroken nearly 30 years later.
I know! It is still heartbreaking about losing Stevie. And, as I am the same age as SRV, we were 16 when Jimi passed away.
It is not just in his fingertips bro, it's in his Soul, spirit and life.
Love Stevie Ray....my uncle was lucky enough to meet his wife after he died. He gave her a hug and offered his condolences
This is so pure, I love it 😂 I miss seeing SRV melt face for the first time. 100% sensory overload
It's not that Stevie left us early, it was just God couldn't do without him any longer. Heaven's choir needed their guitarist back.
🤮🤢
@@bobbillnolan7644
It couldn't have been said better. Beautiful words. SRV had hands that we're priceless.
Bob Bill Nolan ok Bob
You made me cry! 😥
You think this is crazy watching him play this now but imagine watching Jimmy do it in 1967 when this was never done before, it blew peoples minds.
@@RLfromTexas1 true but the original innovators are the giants everyone else is standing on their shoulders no matter how skilled
Stevie's brother actually told him that he played guitar like he was breaking out of jail!
😎👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 rip stevie Ray and Jimmi Hendrix. Great Musicians! Guitar Game are 10s!!!
They were both great and both taken from us far far too soon.
Decades and decades of practice his brother Jimmy from the fabulous Thunderbirds said when they were kids he would play tell his calluses would shred off his fingers he would Crazy Glue them back on and keep playing that's how you get good like that
David Gilmour next coach! Comfortably numb live pulse solo!!!
ARIZONA_ROCKABILLY 928 I was just ab to comment this
I think he should listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers higher ground cuss he doesn’t know about that slap bass tho

def has to.. surprised he hasn't yet
Stevie Ray Vaughan Little Wing El Macombo Live!!!
It's SRV, 3 guys who never will exist, and then everyone else. SRV is guitar JESUS.
Airehcaz Stevie was the best, he could take someone else’s song and do it better while putting his own Stank on it at the same time
A wonderful cover from SRV! God touched that man. ... 💕
So sad how his life was cut so short at 35 😣
Absolutely amazing!! He had his own sound, and no one will ever come close to it!
Here u go man jimi invented it. Stevie perfected it ;) love your stuff
Truth.
😂😂
Welcome to the millions of us who SRV left speechless. He's the best ever and there will never be another like him.
Prince live at Rock and Roll hall of fame..While My Guitar Gently Weeps...be prepared ;)
Very good solo... Some say the best solo ever.....
Already crying at the thought. That performance was magical !! I miss Prince so much 😢☔️
Oh SHIT, YEAH!!! WATCH THAT ONE!!!
Yes!!!!!!!
Absolutely love that performance RIP Prince 💜
Stevie was born to play LIVE.
Studio or live SRV was one of the best. Probably the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place.
However, you can’t really compare SRV and JIMI to each other. That’s just unfair, 2 completely different styles. Both goats though.
"Ya'll ever heard something so good you had to back away?" Lol...yes. Floyd.
He truly left his mark on this world there will never be another one like him he is a true legend
Stevie Ray Vaughan 1954-1990 Died in a Helo crash at 35. Rest in piece. Dude was a beast!
I was just a kid when he died....I hate I wasn't able to see him live
@@spiderbaby420 if you think you hate that, try being old enough to go see him on his final tour, with two dates within an hour and a half of your house, and saying to yourself, "Well, now that he's clean and sober, I'm sure he'll be around for a long time. I'll just catch him on the next tour." 😭😭😭😭

Loved your reaction to the great SRV! I got to see him 3 times in Nashville. Last time was just a couple of months before the crash and I was just devastated. He was definitely influenced by my all-time favorite musician, Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for this fun reaction!
You always make my day with your reactions, but the Stevie Ray Vaughan reactions are by far my favorite one's! I'd love to see you react to John Lee Hooker.✌😎💖
When SRV died I was so struck with pain...
To this day it is hard for me to hold back tears when I see videos like this.
Glen Bagwell when we get deep into our wine and other stuff, we have these q and a's about who you would bring back. I get into trouble for saying Stevie over my favorite uncle.
If we had no Jimmy we would never of had Stevie.. Even Jimmy would have been blown away by SRV's tone and skill at composing, singing and playing blues based rock n roll...
