  • Using our new Stihl RL 540 to very lightly scarify a lawn. I a trying to use this machine as more of a verti cut machine on this lawn.
    This lawn gets a large number of people on it during the wedding season, as it is the area often used for drinks receptions. We have had weddings here of over 250 people - just to give you an idea of the amount of footfall..
    My aim is to do a pass with this machine at least once a month during the season, to try and lift the award and reduce the amount of grass laying flat & un-cut.
    As you will see in the video, it works pretty well.
    I would also like to say a very big thank you to our local machinery dealership John Miller Garden Machinery for delivering the machine to www.johnmiller...
    You can find more info on this Stihl RL 540 Scarifier HERE
    www.stihl.co.u...
    Here is a brief rundown of the machine.
    The high-performance STIHL petrol lawn scarifier RL 540 removes moss and lawn thatch from even larger lawns quickly, conveniently and cordlessly. Driven by a powerful petrol engine, the scarifier ensures optimal lawn aeration. The scarifying unit can be conveniently set to the required working depth on the handlebar. This effective complement to your lawn care takes just a few steps per year. Proper scarifying fundamentally improves the supply of nutrients to your lawn and promotes its growth in the long term. Thanks to the working width of 38 cm and the easy-running wheels with special tread, you have all the manoeuvrability and agility you need for your twice-yearly lawn aeration with the STIHL RL 540. The sturdy polymer housing is tough enough to withstand even long-term use. For easy transport, the scarifier is also equipped with a carrying handle. The handlebar can be folded in just a few steps, so that the lawn scarifier can also be stored compactly.

    Those fescue type lawns do produce lots of thatch and as a consequence require more maintenance to keep in good health. That scarifier looked like a nice piece of kit. Great job by the way.

    I have the Bosch vericutter. You said go over the grass every month. I was told to give it a aerate in May and then not until the grass stops growing, possibly late August till mid-September to stop the moss.

      Hi, the process you mention is for scarifying the lawn to remove thatch and moss. I am using this on a much higher setting to cut any blades of grass that are laying over, as this is a lawn that receives a lot of footfall, as many as 250 people in a weekend.
      Hope this helps explain 😀

      @@TheFullyChargedGardener Oh right. Now I know. Mine is just a small area, so I will leave as is and just do it when the moss starts again as mine grass is so bad in early Autumn.

    Thank you for the fun and informative video. I really enjoy your channel. Please forgive me for asking. What are the nice white bushes under the tree in the end. I know you are telling but i am too slow picking it up. I believe they might be just what i am looking for to plant under my maple tree as they seem to do great in the shade. Best wishes from Germany.

    Hello fellow gardener, i have a question. Before the first aerification on what height should i mow the lawn? Should it be done on the same day as the aerification or it could be done couple of days before?

    • @TheFullyChargedGardener
      @TheFullyChargedGardener  2 роки тому

      Hi, I just mow the grass at its usual cutting height. and mowing it a couple days before won't make any difference at all.
      Thank you for watching.

    Hello "The Fully Charged Gardener" thanks for sharing this great video. I have a lot of dead moss on the lawn, the Stihl RL540 appears to come with only blades to aerate and remove cross growing grass, other makes come with the blades and thin wire teeth for moss removal, would you agree this unit is designed to aerate over moss removal? I guess the question I have would be, is this machine a scarifier or aerator?
    Thanks Vikki.

    • @TheFullyChargedGardener
      @TheFullyChargedGardener  4 роки тому

      Hi Vikki,
      The RL540 uses the blades to lift thatch and moss out of the lawn - I have a separate video which shows it doing this.
      When using this machine, you only set it so that it is cutting through the thatch layer in the lawn. To aerate the lawn - you would use either a solid or hollow tine aerator.
      The rake attachments that come with some machine are for removing thatch and moss less aggressively.
      I hope my ramblings make sense 😀 Thank you for watching
