Pothos Plant = TOXIC to Fish Aquariums?

- There has always been the debate that Pothos plants are toxic to fish aquariums. I have found no evidence anywhere that indicates that the Pothos plant is indeed toxic to fish tanks or fish inside the aquariums.
My experience has proved to me that keeping Pothos plants in your fish. Aquariums is not toxic. I have had zero issues whatsoever and I’m keeping all kinds of inhabitants. I’m keeping aquarium fish as well as aquarium shrimp with Pothos plants inside the aquariums.
I would like to start a debate if anyone out there has had an experience that’s different from mine. I am open to ideas and would like to hear from those that have dealt with this issue.

I'm 44 and have never had any issues with pothos in my tanks, Debunked!
Most of the people I know that had problems with pothos in tank had to do with water changes.
Several UA-cam channels say pothos is very good at reducing nitrate in water. Then, in the same breath, they say the only reason we do water changes is to reduce nitrates. So newbies get the idea that pothos=no water changes. Unless your tank is setup for that (ie. Long established, deep substrate, heavily planted, etc) stopping water changes is usually a bad idea.
I used pothos in my aquariums for YEARS and never had any issues.
I use pothos in aquarium both emersed and submerged. Pothos is nontoxic however please use caution when submerging. Make sure to thoroughly wash the roots and leaves. There may be insecticides sprayed on the leaves.
Thanks for posting this! I just planted Pothos in the back of my filter
Yes to rest. Lots of people have used pothos in aquariums for years. They are great. Good for you doing this 👏
Shit dude. House lookin Hella relaxing
What size cutting of pothos did you start with on that that 125g? I also have a 125g with mbunas. As your aware they are heavy feeders and require a lot of water changes. I was thinking of buying a entire plants, maybe 2. Problem is they like to eat the roots. Any suggestions?
Your tanks and house plants are beautiful! Thats what I want my house to look like.
Do you keep and pothos in goldfish tanks?
Its only if it is eaten. as long as your fish don't eat it, it won't be a problem. It is also mostly the leaves that are a problem.
I been scared to use this plant always wanted to use it tho for a community tank and a betta tank
have you ever had an anthurium plant in your tanks? just got one from Lowe's and would like to use it in one of mine. can't find much info on it.
I been scared to use this plant always wanted to use it tho for a community tank and a betta tank so I’ll be fine then ?
You should definitely call out these people. Prob "strips" heavily consumes water of minerals and causes issues with homeostasis - i.e osmoregulation. No different to any living creature. -knowledge is power-
I have extensive pothos, philodendron and monstera. No problem, no nitrates. I find dropping a piece of plant into the tank to be successful and they grow like mad underwater. I do tend to have a problem keeping plecos, though. I’m not sure if that pleco problem is pothos related.
Are peace lily also safe?
LOL my severums and acaras ate the stuff like salad.
I let my pothos in a pot sit on top of my medium in my (100 gal i think) fluval aquaclear hob. Almost 2 years later i have big toe sized stems, nearly slitting leaves and its taken over half my living room with a spider plant and a habanero hidden in there out of that filter. Im seriously afraid of tearing it down from roots alone, but they did form a nice water fall of roots lol
It's on a 55 in front of a window, I'm to the point of having to chop it back and give them away because it's just grown massive.
But I am debating on cleaning leaves off some longer stems and planting it like I've done my lucky bamboo in tote/planter ponds/fountains.
I had an extra aquarium light and set it up for my young blood orange tree grown from a seed. It's doing great and probably appreciates the sunrise/sunset feature haha
Unfortunately, citrus is rarely true to seed. So it'll be citrus. But probably won't fruit or if it does it won't taste good.
@@georgewilliamsiii4677 yeah i figured as much. I have a lemon tree I grew from a store lemon 10 years ago and it has never flowered. But they look nice and the leaves smell good at least!
Have you put pothos with koi fish? I googled if it's harmful to koi fish but I'm getting mixed reviews.
How about for a turtle tank??
Is it good in a salad?
Money tree propagation in aquarium not fully submerged only 1/3 of stem
there is NO debate ..... just some fools
Hi there , Question , why do you think my pothos roots have turned almost black, it looks like root rot , they were white 2 wk ago .. so im depating on what to do with it
That would mean you left some soil on them! Make sure you rinse them thoroughly
Can I put pothos in my betta tank
!!! have you figured out the answer to this?
@@priscillaspets nooo
I just put one plant in the tank to see what woukd happen
@@blankepiphany4154 how has it been working out?
@@priscillaspets haven't had any issues, I was just using them as temporary plants because my fish came in before my plants did
idk about the pothos but it seems like cats are toxic to your plants hahaha
Click bait video. Pothos are excellent plants for aquariums and provide incredible natural filtration.
This is click bait . Goodbye
I'd say the argument that you "have a lot of fish tanks" is super dumb since you don't have every type of fish. What's not poisonous to humans is to dogs and neutral to rabbits. There are so many different species of fish so that's what it really depends on not that u own a lot of tanks lol. I've heard people in particular that have had an issue are karp (goldfish) owners but that could be due to over eating or something and I heard the roots have calcium oxalates in them as well which can really fuck with digestive tracks which could probably turn fatal over time for some species. Just be conscious about your conformation bias. Just because YOU didn't get cancer from smoking cigarettes doesn't mean they don't cause cancer.
Also all respect bro just providing some more info from my pool of knowledge. I'm in the camp its fine for 99% of fish but every species can have a random plant that want's to kill them we see it all across the animal kingdoms
I think Potos robs other aquarium plants of nutrients that's the only downside
