I’ve been doing 30% water changes and the issues resolved but now my Phosphate levels are off the chart. Everything else ammonia, nitrites, nitrates is zero. I can’t figure it out! Should I add plants? Right now I only have silk plants, and I added one amazon sword plant from my other 10 gallon tank which has white cloud minnows and snails. That tank doesn’t have a phosphate problem. So I know it’s not like I’m doing the test wrong.
If you have moss or plants though, pothos will suck the nutrients because it is fast growing so add a nutrient substrate, aquarium safe fertilizer, or tabs, right?
I have the same neon potho's in every single tank and my fish room is like a jungle, but I always have 0 nitrates and it since I work it stretches my water changes out to every three weeks, instead of weekly. @@vapordepositionmusic1901 I give my fish a lot more room personally...but I pack them in like 3 inches to a gallon or more, often...I just think they need plants, water changes and enough space to excersize....but with many fish tanks of mine, they're 20 gallons with 2 plecos ,100 guppies , 10 cories and 50 shrimp and they're all seemingly happy...I agree betta may want more than that container but not much more room, and to be fair the fish are found in puddles and swampy shallows with less water and room than that container...hence why they are able to breathe air with their labyrinth organ

I’m thinking of getting the little beta tank to start. I’m assuming I need to have a plant with roots to start it, correct? Educate me! What’s stage should the plant be in when i put it in the tank? ☺️
Do specifically mean Pothos? It helps for the plant to grow.
I have a giant leaf that I am going to try out. How often do you change out the water if at all.
Depends on the nitrate level.
Got my betta in a 1 gal bowl with a pothos he seems rly happy very active eating right and his fins are growing although the pothos is growing stringy brown algae I don’t think it’s bad for my betta since nothing seems wrong with him it’s just rly ugly n I’m trying to get rid of it how do I go about this
No idea
Great video thankyou! Do you think with enough pothos we can consistently keep the nitrate ammonia levels to almost zero? And also if youve done a before after pothos test results do share pls :) thanks!
Not Ammonia,. but yes, you can use plants to suck up nitrate.
@@MichaelsFishRoom plants also use ammonia smh
@@GouramiNatural very little.
I put several in my fish tanks . How long does it take to start working my all ready have roots
The bigger they are, the more they nitrates they use.
He was clearly talking about the King of Diy
He was? When?
@@MichaelsFishRoom my mistake
Any idea how long it takes to start working? Have 3 smaller cuttings with roots in my tank now (have had it in there about a week)but no change yet. And how quick does it grow?
If nothing else changes you should see a change in nitrates in a few days. Mine grows pretty quick, not like anacharis, but much faster than anubis.
Michael's Fish Room thanks very much for the reply. Keep up the good work
I just want you to know that I’m a new subscriber and im going all the way back and watching you from the start. I really enjoy you man.
Oh gosh....they are so bad! LOL
Welcome aboard!
@@MichaelsFishRoom well man I just like that you are you in your videos. King of diy, kgtropicals, I feel like they aren’t as genuine as you
@@JJJOOSSHHH Considering I have met Joey, and know John, I can tell you one of those is not not genuine, the other is......
I get that man. And I’ve never had the chance to meet them. You just keep doing you. Something about your videos is different in a really good way.
And John seems to be a real laid back person. Maybe I’m being too hard on him.
I love your channel, but I do have to disagree, the Betta will grow and yes will live in that jar and if you change the water everyday he/she will stay healthy however, would you want to live in a wardrobe?.... would you be happy with no room to run around? Please don’t encourage people to keep them in small jars! They need room to swim.
I’m not a betta, it’s not a fair comparison.
@@MichaelsFishRoom what would be a fair comparison? My Betta uses every inch of his 10g and swims fast even with very long fins. I couldn’t think of anything more sad then seeing him confined to a jar! You give very valuable info and as I previously stated, I love your channel! If you choose to keep your Betta like that then that’s up to you but don’t show or talk about it on your videos as you give the impression is okay as a long term home and that is just wrong. You could keep a dog confined to a cage or even a small room but I don’t think it would be happy, do you?
@@xxamyxx85 See, it is not a fair comparison because I am not a fish. Listen, you are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to mine. It is as simple as that.
You answer really does not make sense. It’s not just my opinion, it’s a fact! U didn’t respond to a single question I actually asked, because you don’t have a valid answer! You could have just acknowledged what I was saying, surely you understand that your Betta would be much happier in a bigger home? And that a jar does not have sufficient swimming space? You clearly just do not care! Unsubscribed!
@@xxamyxx85 Nice, so I disagree with you, wasn't an ass in disagreeing and you unsubscribe, Good I don't need snowflakes watching anyway. Bye Richard.
Got my pothos today and thanks!
Great!
Do you have a pleco care video on bristles I want a 55gal tank for a britsle nose I wanted to get the albino one in your fish store but I cannot find you'r care video my fish community dosent have a date guide either I need info from water to food I just can't seem to find it
They are pretty hardy and easy to care for. I’ve done a few videos on them, but not just “care”
Your Betta really needs more room. You're right. With good filtration he won't die. But neither do people in prison locked in a 10 by 10 cell. You'll be alive. But you won't like it. Please give him a proper home 🥺.
FFS, YOU CANNOT COMPARE A HUMAN TO A FIS!
@@MichaelsFishRoom It's the same thing. Wouldn't you be very unhappy in a tiny space all day? Bettas should have at the very least 5 gallons, preferably 10 no matter what Petco would have you believe. Poor guy can only swim in a very small circle.
@@trishakauffman4621So it is socially acceptable to eat your young then?
@@MichaelsFishRoom They used to kill kids they didn't want. You can abort and that's just fine. I'm sure in some cultures they do eat children. It's all subject to what culture you live in. Though I'm confused how we got from *you should give you fish enough room to move* to eating babies.
Thanks for the video. Can I use pothos to reduce ammonia? Any idea how long does it take to reduce it? I
No, it will not reduce ammonia. It only uses the nitrates as food. Sorry
@@MichaelsFishRoom many thanks for your response!
YW!
I've watched a few videos now and I love them! I love the humor; delicious fry, and coughing I'm okay guys don't worry about me. I lol'd at that! What kind of guppies are at 7:17, when you tested the water? And where is a good place to buy that moss at? I have tons of pothos cuttings, I'll definitely have to add some to my tank in the meantime while I find moss!
Lol, thanks! They are mutts. I breed and sell them in my website www.michaelsfishroom.com
Silver Pothos is my favorite. There is even a pink version. Flamingo Pothos maybe?
Really?
Thats what Im saying cause I can never seem to get it. Yeah it supposedly exists. just rare.
Like white female guppies!
Also you better watch out for those pothos people who might be watching this saying, “ how dare you have that pothos in there with that disgusting fish! It’s plant feet are in that gross fish feces!” - those same pothos people also apparently have never kept plants before to know its good for the plants :)
Bwhahahahha
Don't complain, we'll be opening ponds early this year. Been using pothos for years
Me complain? Nope!
What size boards are you using to hold up those tanks? Between the 3 tanks per gap, it's about 480 pounds right?
They are 2 X 6’s. Yes about 480 lbs.
Great video I used pothos in most of my tanks
Nice!
I got my tank and my sand is turning brown I do regular water changes and recently it just started giving me nitrate and nitrates levels on the tetra strips on pink like there stressing out going on to caution never had that problem till now I changed waters yesterday and still reading the same is it my sand that I have to remove in order to get my tank back to how it was if you can help me out idk what to do
Hard to say what the issue is, sounds like you have diatoms and your tank is not cycled.
I'm in South Jersey and got snow. Is it going to be another year with snow in April?
Me too! We are like twins. Nope, this was the last of it!
@@MichaelsFishRoom I hope so lol
"Mother nature and her crackhead ways". Gotta live in the northeast to truly appreciate that comment. 39 in RI yesterday, wind chill below 0 today. Good video
LOL, Thanks.
If I put Pothos in my HOB, how do I clean my sponges?? Wil it not stress the roots if I take it out while cleaning?
Simply take it out and clean the sponges.
@@MichaelsFishRoom I've always been afraid to damage the roots when I repot plants (in soil, I mean.) So I don't have to worry about damaging the roots when I take it out? They'll be ok and continue to grow?
I just imagine that they grow all around the sponge and get all twisted and then I'll have to break them apart to get it out.

Don't even need the plant roots, any cutting with enough stem in water will grow. Each little knob on the stem is a root ready to grow when it sees water
Yup
That answered my question I was wondering if you could clone the plant
Does giving unlimited access to brine shrimp to my guppies ,will be harmful for them and tank also??
Yup
@@MichaelsFishRoom thanks...and a little tiny question some mysterious small plants are growing in gravel and guppies usually take them out of the gravel so... Is it okay to have them in tank ..is that mean my tank cycled or something?
Without knowing what they are it’s hard to say, but most likely yes, it’s ok.
@@MichaelsFishRoom thanks
@@MichaelsFishRoom and now they are growing in the sponge filter..are they good or bad i don't know😅😅😅
I wonder if syngonium will help in the same way. They're really similar, grow crazy fast, and do well with water propagation.
Maybe, but I don't know!
@@MichaelsFishRoom I used to also use water spinach, as it also loves water and grows nice big leaves with all the nitrate it gets from the aquarium. Also has pretty flowers that remind me of morning glory.
Okay, I just check out it’s scientific name; ipomoea aquatica. That’s the same family as morning glory. That’s why the flowers look so similar to morning glory. It’s basically a morning glory of the water! Lol! Great for those areas of the garden that get flooded. And edible as well, so you can hack it back weekly and contribute to your 5 portions of veg per day.
@@juliemcgugan1244 Cool!
I think we're talking about different plants lol. Syngonium are tropical aroids and are definitely not edible. They're very similar to pothos in a lot of ways. The scientific name for the most common variety is "syngonium podophyllum".
Can some recommend a filter for a 80 litre? Preferably not like a hang on back filter so my lid can be on my tank
Sponge filter
Thank you. Can you send a link please.
does it lower ammonia levels too ?
Not in my experience, but all 61 of my tanks had 0 ammonia.
Hey bro will this work for a saltwater tank???
My tap water has high nitrites.
I have no idea bro, sorry.
Try a product called Arag-Alive.
It's living sand. I used it in my brackish tank and it fully cycled but never once produced nitrates.
Nice video my friend!
I'd love to see a side by side like 6 month chart of the nitrates in 2 "control" tanks that are essentially stocked the same.
Yeah, that is too much work. Lol
He just makes false claim after false claim. He's the laughing stock of youTube for how bad his fish are kept.
Yup, that’s right. Laughing stock, all the way to the bank.
@@MichaelsFishRoom if the fish breed and their alive hes doing something right. Some people wanna give a betta a 75 gallon to it's self (yet unsurprisingly they dont make the ph 5 and make it darker than coffee with tannins and mud though...and a betta would prefer 32 oz. of catapa leaf and fresh water + warm room than in a huge clear water tank without roots or tannins it's all subjective to a large degree)
I personally keep betta in both ways, so whatever...as long as they're breeding and swimming, looking healthy fine.
I’ve had a potho in my tank now for over a month and has great root growth but I’m experiencing a nitrite spike. I’ve done a change again. Why isn’t my potho not removing the nitrite.
Because is removes nitrAte, not nitrite.
Didn't realise one can keep a fish in an egg cup as long as I change the water!
What did you name the betta? Jailbird Joe would have suited.
Sure can.

You keep bettas in cans, too?
@@pencilpauli9442 the fuck is a can?

"Can" is used informally for a jail, which is appropriate given the conditions that betta was kept in.
It's also a synonym for the toilet, which is appropriate for your language.
A can is a metal container for foodstuffs. eg A can of pea soup.

do you have to root the pothos first before adding to the tank or can you put a cutting in the water straight away? i have a pothos plant and i'd love to try this.
Put it in straight away!
Subbed cause you imitated peta rage on your Bèta. Nice vids man.
Thanks for the sub!
So the Pothos leaves can't be submerged in the water like other aquatic plants?
Not the leaves; just the roots.
Just the roots
As an experiment I put some pothos completely submerged in my tank planted in the gravel (manly because I can't do it any other way with the lid on the tank) and it's slowly growing new leaves and roots underwater and still alive after several months!
Cool!
So using pothos how much per do you use per size tank?
As much as you want.
I went to a green house place where I live and got 2 starts for $1 each, I think I will like them

LOL....you know how plants work right?
@@MichaelsFishRoomLOL, For the most part, I think. But seems like some people use these with planted tanks and some say they don't. The ones that do end up add extra fert. So I guess if Nitrates are a big issue for someone then they would use this option. I take you're opinion highly so I asked.
Lol, it uses nutrients like any other plant. I use it for excess nitrate.
