Joy Division - Ceremony (Rehearsal Session in Manchester 1980)

- There are three recorded versions of "Ceremony" in existence. The first is a live version, available on the Still album, from their final concert at High Hall, Birmingham University on 2 May 1980. The second, available on the Heart and Soul four-disc box set is from a rehearsal tape made in April/May 1980. The third is a version recorded at the soundcheck on the afternoon of 2 May 1980.
It is 18.05.2024 and I am here. Ceremony was the first song that made me cry because of lyrics, how it sounds and knowing the sad history of Ian Curtis. Rest In Peace my all time hero and muse.
I’m there with you. Never felt anything emotional from music all my life and Ceremony made me cry at 27.
At this point in my life, there’s nothing I’d want more than for Ian Curtis to still be here.
And a few days later there was no Joy Division anymore...
This song always had a strong meaning to me. It's like the ending of a wonderful day, but instead of the dark night you can already see a new dawn. Some of the greatest musicians of all time passed away in 1980: John Lennon, Bon Scott, John Bonham and of course Ian Curtis.
May everyone of you come home safely this evening.
I got goosebumps after reading this comment
I got goosebumps too - as before I read your comment I was listening to this song last thing before bed, and feeling melancholy because of how Ian must have been feeling, but good because this past year everything has gone right for me after several years of shit. Weird how music (and UA-cam comments!) can catch you like that. Peace.
... and vladimir vysotzki
You're not alone with that sentiment bon Scott and Ian such iconic musicians at least to me Bonham great drummer and Lennon not ot shabby either
darby crash =chuck wagon
I saw JD by accident in 1978, life was never the same thereafter.
Whereabouts?
by accident?
I wish i could accidentally see one of the greatest bands of all time.
except JD didn’t exist in 1978 ... 😅😂🤣
@@gillesleguen7762 they formed in 76, with their band previously being titled Warsaw. They changed it because there was another group with the same name. I understand how much of a rush it can be to call someone a liar on the internet, but a cursory Google search will even tell you they formed in 76
Stephen Morris is never given enough credit.
....is the truth
Totally agree!
understatement of the century.
He's a fucking machine
John Fiebke who?
This is the greatest song not released. Ian Curtis' haunting vocals on full display. What could have been.
To Ian and Joy
Division . . . we love you
We will never forget you 💔
There was never gonna be a coulda. This was it. Ian knew it.
I love the rawness of this track. It's like I'm right there in 1980.
+Alana Jung best comment by a country mile..... In my opinion you truly know what you are saying.
You can hear the sadness in his voice.
You can be, again. Investigate Dancehouse Theatre, Manchester this April.
Love it... I relate to Ian... i'm kind of a tormented.. madman Artist... poet... painter...
I make videos about reality... i've written poetry on asylum walls.
This raven is mine.
I hope your last 7 years have been kind to you in this Hell realm.
what a drummer
Ikr, Stephen Morris is so good
My fav
He was a jazz drummer , and this explains a lot ...
Drum machine but in human form
only one to compete imho was nigel preston from the cult
God has this on his i-pod
al hendy Ian singing in heaven, I think!!! =)
He sings it to my beautiful daughter. What times they have - all we have are memories
People go to hell for committing suicide according to "God".
well god dosnt exist so...
exactly
This version has Ian on it. Therefore, it can be deduced that this is the best version of the song to ever exist.
KCwellard this version sucks. just because ian is singing doesnt make it better. personally i think bernard sung it much better
lol
Ian was probably already given thought to his near death when he wrote this song. Bernard's wimpy voice does not do it justice.
Rodney Garza well im not you, I like bernard's wimpy voice
I prefer New Order's version of this as well. SO much better.
I was fortunate to be at Warsaw's first gig supporting Buzzcocks at the Electric circus in Manc, l love them to bits..what an amazing inspirational band they still are ❤
wow... rare...
Its amazing that a song where you can't really understand the lyrics still hits like a ton of bricks. Especially if you know some of Ian's history. He really put his soul into his music.
I have thought that I understand those lyrics.
One of the greatest of all still... after 27 years.
imagine a third album ....
Kane Armatage "movement" by new order is essentially that
Jake No! no! nothing without Ian’s vocals sorry!
Steve Brown no that’s true, but the music for Movement was most likely written around about the time of Ian’s death, so musically, it’s a Joy Division album
The2011Collector Barny is no Ian though! IMHO not a very good singer.
It's a jd/no song
I love New Order's version, but I wish that Ian could have done a formal, recorded version. The lyrics are certainly different in some places. On the other hand, this one is kinda haunting and adds to the mystique that was Ian Curtis.
A version with an AI-created Ian Curtis' voice is available!
@@fabsouza11 AI 'resurrection' in film and music is abhorrently disgusting. The very idea of using a computer to imitate a person after their death makes a mockery of their life and legacy.
I feel like that's an unpopular opinion, and I don't like how you're stating it as fact. @@jamman217

What an awesome lyrics catching!
Are they the genuine lyrics for Ian's first verse? I thought they were still undiscovered, massive respect if they are right and to you or who ever made them out
my interpretation of this version of the lyrics, after multiple listens. His lyrics didn't appear to be set in stone, as they seemed to change each time he sang the song.
Thanks man
Whoa ... I really like these lyrics
Man, Ian's barely audible vocals are heartbreaking.
You don't even need to be able to make out the lyrics to feel what he is feeling at this point, shortly before self-inflicted death.
SECRET ORIGINAL LYRICS:
Focus how the wheels are moving
Find the same, the same old story
Focus why the wheels are turning
throw them away until they will catch fire
Hope to find the same little story
maybe then they will see me
Hope and pray, no one saw me
maybe then, they will go catch fire
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
heaven knows I got to get somewhere
crash and burn, the things I did
I got too stealth prepared for it this time
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
heaven knows I got to be somewhere
Avenues all wind with trees
pictures me and then you'll start watching
watching forever
watching forever,
wherever i go, they will go
wherever i go, they will go
wherever i go, they will go
@HULK HOGAN That's fucked up. He most have known at that time he wouldn't last much longer
@@ParanoidParkProject people usually plan to kill themselves
@@alfiex6667 yeah they do, he was gloomy though
@@pen2199 I'm suicidal I think I would know lmao, you think about it for years and then one day you just can't take it and you do it, not something people plan, if they do they really don't wanna die they just want someone to pay attention to them.
This was the future sound of Joy Division which makes it special even though Ian’s vocals are of poor audible quality. I think he would’ve made the track even better if he had time to properly record it. I also genuinely think the electronic sound of New Order would’ve been Joy Division if Ian lived. Ian actually encouraged synths as he was a fan of Kraftwerk.
I wouldn't have liked joy division fully if they went into synth more
I think they would have sounded like a mix of New Order, The Cure and Radiohead.
I agree with you. I'm not a fan of dance music, people plonking away on synths isn't proper music. When New Order made Blue Monday they got asked to do it live for TV and they couldn't because they didn't know how to because so much was just studio editing. They were going to do a concert in Australia and were shitting themselves as they knew they'd be asked to do it. So they had to put parts together on the old floppy discs and try to play to that. They accepted a live offer on UK TV and fucked up badly as somehow what was on floppy was loaded wrong and played in reverse order.
IMO Ian Curtis WAS Joy Division. After he died the rest didn't know what to do because he wrote all the songs and he chose what bits of music sounded best with his lyrics. Very occasionally they would play some bits and Ian would say, "okay I'll write lyrics for that." They seriously lucked out when ian joined them and he's dead and they're still raking in the millions!
This song makes me want to sob because IMO it's a suicide note. Now I'm going to say something i thought I never would say so bear with me for a minute.
I was once watching JD videos on here when I saw a comment saying the band sacrificed Ian so that New Order could become famous and rich. I burst out laughing, thinking what a nutcase! Since then I've been reading all the books and watching interviews. So many have asked how his band members could not be aware of how depressed and suicidal he was. Their answer was they didn't really listen to his lyrics, it was his business and they just left it to him. Firstly what band in history hasn't known the lyrics of the singer standing next to them, ESPECIALLY when studio recordings are made? What terrible friends would hear that and think their mate is okay? People can say it was a different time and men didn't talk about things like that. Well, they weren't men , yes they were over the age of 18 but that doesn't make you a man, all they had to do was listen but apparently they never heard!
Then in one interview I heard hooky blaming Ian's suicide on his wife, Debbie! He actually says, "they had an argument, that's obviously what made him do it!" Im not sure how old you are but i am old and Hooky's expression when he said that was very suspect like he knows he isn't telling the truth.
Then there's the girl Ian had an affair with. After hearing the songs for the new album, she phoned someone in a panic but i can't remember who. It might have been Bernard. Whoever, they asked her what she thought and she said i hate it! They asked her why and she said because he means every word and it terrifies me.
So okay, you must have heard the theory that bands sign a deal with the devil in order to become famous? I'm an athiest so i don't believe in a literal devil but what if the record company and other band members knew Ian was in a bad way? What if they all knew everything would be over without ian, especially if he just embarrassed them in the future cos he was disabled and scared of flying? What if they were told to ignore his problems, he'll kill himself and then I'll make you guys famous? They refused to give interviews for ages afterwards and say JD didn't give interviews but Ian did, I've heard it, it's on UA-cam and he doesn't sound depressed in the slightest!
So now im beginning to think that comment wasn't so crazy and they didn't mean they cooked him on a bbq for Satan but maybe there's more to it than that. Now whenever I hear Ceremony by either band, I feel weird and sick and I've come to the conclusion that the other guys have not been honest about something in this story. Maybe Ian didn't want to go electronic at all. @tomo366
Hopefully someday, we can get a similar treatment which was used on The Beatles Get Back documentary and usingg AU, get remixed version

the strokes, the cure, but this song is a masterpiece.......would love to go back in time to see them play live.
Ian wasn’t delicate, he had health problems that would of crushed anybody
Song meant everything to me as a kid. Everything.
This version will always be so haunting to me...it's like he's saying goodbye
I get that feeling too. This was recorded on 14th. May 1980, just four days before his passing.
His vocal intonation/melody at 1:01 ''the wheels are turning'', breaks my heart, it's so god damn beautiful.
Yes, beautiful part
1:06 but yeah!

when it's 12.24 on a saturday afternoon and you;re already wasted drunk, trawling youtube for the most depressing songs you know and then you remember this...and it strangely makes you feel better, and the only annoying thing is that the speakers on your laptop don't go any louder
Nicely said
you alright mate?
RIP Ian. 40 years ago today. Immortal.
It's lovely seeing Ian smile. Beautiful song.
I don't know if it's in the nature of this recording a combination, including the speed at which it was laid down on tape, the placement of the mics, and Ian's emotional and physical state, but what comes across in this recording is sheer, forboding pathos.
Apparent is the weariness, the kind of flat despondency that people that have given up the fight express themselves in, drained, exhausted vocals, the complete disregard for covering up the crying tremors in his voice, the resigned absence of any "punch" or highs and lows in the delivery of the words. What is strange is the words aren't in a monotone, yet the sound level has no hills or valleys and the frequency is low, as though breaking through a barrier, removed and muffled.
The words, when you strain to hear them, contain the power unique to this version of the song, the utter truth of being right near the end, stripped of pretense or artiface.
Fuck me,the pub bore.
Very true and accurate description of this song's deliverance, it's even more so with their last track ever recorded called in a lonely place
This in my top 5 songs of all time and trust me I've heard it all.
Ugh if only Ian was still here cause it hurts me so much. I'm honestly so bothered he left cause it aches me for a clear version. I hope they find a clear version or find something cause if it ever gets discovered then hell it might be the best actual song to exist even if the unclear version is still a top 5 for me.
God if I had a time machine I would get that song hell I'd even save him it just hurts cause we'll never hear it. I know people wanted Kurt but I want Ian back.
I've made probably a million posts about this song but my obsession to find "the" version kills me. There's no clean vocal ceremony song by Ian and it kills me. I saw a comment that said perhaps if you believe in fate then Ceremony was never supposed to be. It hurts cause it might be true. Part of me thinks Ian never wanted to popularise the song but part of me is too selfish. This song is definitely an unfortunate fate which only makes me believe even more that this might the best song that never was.
Ceremony has became my most favourite Joy Division track. There's so many different versions on this song and it has been in my top joy division songs until it has become one of my favourite songs to ever exist. Everytime I listen to it, it defines a new story. The fact theres no clear ian curtis Ceremony song says how good this song is. Everytime I listen to it I always love it more. When I listen to it.. it feels like an ending to another night. It almost feels like your singing as if you know you screwed up and there's a presence in you a bad one that still longs chasing after you. It's almost as if your trying to correct a mistake that could never be managed.
Ian probably wrote this song for himself when he saw everything in life, all the clouds, sky, and love all leaving him behind. Its almost leaving a trail to an endless or eternal point which will never end. Its sad to believe that suicide was believed to be the only way for him to balance the mistakes he has caused with his life. Its almost as if he knew that the trigger was suddenly come back to haunt him and there won't be Ian no more.
In the end, there's no clear way of representing this song hence makes it one of the most cursed and beautiful song simultaneously. This is one of those songs that are impossible to hate due to its story and lyrics.
this is the best version of ceremony, captures the emotion of what this tape gives you. this a clear version you are searching for, this....
this was recorded at graveyard studios on 14th May 1980 according to Peter Hook.
really? Man, four days before Ian hung himself. Ian sounds pretty defeated at this point.
The best joy division song.
not sure if this is correct but here it is:
This is why it’s so unnerving
Would you say the same old story?
This is why the wheels are turning
Turn away and turn towards this time
Listen now the savior’s calling
Come again and we will be there
Traveled fast but now I’m stopping
Think again and change its way this time
Oh, I’ll break them all, no mercy shown
Heaven knows I got to get somewhere
Crash and burn, the things I did
The times she cried, too frail to wake this time
I’ll break them all, no mercy shown
Heaven knows I got to be somewhere
Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me in ten year’s time, watching
Watching forever
Watching forever
Forever, letting go
Forever, letting go
Forever, letting go

When something so beautifully sorrowful apears to my ears... It's always ian's voice that brings a tear to my eye.... I remember in my younger years, falling to pieces when I would think about how much tallent was lost in Mr. Curtis... My first memory of music is listening to unknown pleasures on cassette in my moms shitty little geo metro..... Begging her to play it over and over,.... I miss him so much, specially since I did not know about him until after he died. Touched my Soul with his words and tragic genius......
This version has a restlessness to it that the post-Curtis version doesn't. The guitar also has a post punk feistiness to it that the New Order one doesn't.

This song and 'In a lonely place' are probably JD's darkest most depressing songs. God the chills.
+ Atmosphere
One detail I think most people overlook is that what is mostly interpreted as "The times she cried, too frail to wake this time" also sounds a lot like "The captain shouts, too frail to wake this time". I think the second line is likelier if you believe he's saying "this sinking ship" and not "these things she said".
I saw New Order live last year and when they played this I just about cry such a good song
É triste saber que nunca iremos saber o que Ian realmente escreveu em sua música, mas isso a torna ainda mais especial para mim. Definitivamente uma das melhores que já escutei.

Such a great song .. When N.O. plays this live on stage, I can truly hear the sadness in Bernards voice, sadness in knowing it should be Ian, whenever NO play a JD song live, it's definitely an ode to their dear friend Ian. 😢
Wooooooooooow I had no idea there was a recording of Ian singing this
If you blast this song out full blast! IT'S EPIC.
I love this version but it always makes me sad too. I think that Closer is the best post-punk album ever but Ceremony shows they were just getting started. Brilliant as NO are, I've long believed that had JD lasted and continued to evolve at the stunning rate they already were they would have become the best band ever of any genre or any period in history.
I don't think so. Closer by mood is a complete finale, end of all ends. There is literally no way where Ian's mind could grow whilst keeping a burden of such illness on his shoulders. He could go into some serious treatment instead of taking his life, but this would take years and tremendous effort to heal such wounds and he would be a completely different person and creator afterwards
Love this so much have it on repeat. Great tribute to Ian Curtis. So nice to see him smile at the end. RIP Ian GBNF Lisa McDonough via James Kerr.
3:35 is incredible. That vocal melody Ian did wasn’t included on the New Order version. His lyrics are also unintelligible there. But it sounds so mysterious and his last contribution…

Heard this song in 1981 when i borrowed still from a friend (was 14 years old), never stopped listening. Couldn't believe that Ian didn't live anymore when I discovered them. JD is timeless (son of a friend is a major fan now, because of me :) )
yes, this is one of the only 3 versions Ian had ever sung on.
Man, the shots of Manchester from 1979/1980 look so stark....music fits it perfectly...they were definitely a band from a time and a place
It took a long while before I knew New Order was Joy Division. I never put two and two together. Cerenony is still my fave as the opening song from the Substance album. By chance, I found love will tear us apart, much later. Fell for Ian Curtis, then. And then, to learn the two were the same, blew me away. Meant even more.
If only Ian had decided to live, at least a while longer, we might have seen New Order version musicianship with Ian's vocal styling over the top of it all. Just thinking of it sounds glorious.
I have this without a cleaning and this is good.
Great job.
18th day I put my restaured studio outtakes from 1979 and that original video released aug 18, 1982.

this song gives you the vibe you'd get if new order songs were sung by Ian...amazing as always
Of course we all wish he was here. But what people don’t understand. Is there are some people on this earth that make such a mark and shine so much brighter that they shine for half as long. They are supposed to be remembered in their prime. Therefore they never grow old. I mean just think about some of the artists that were huge in the 60s and 70s they’re all fat and ugly most of them and start playing shows at morongo casinos and shit and keep making music even though it’s not that great anymore or people are just tired of them. We’ll that will never happen with IAN. All we can do is be thankful that he was able to do the incredible things he did in the short time we had him on this earth. R.I.P. IAN & JOY DIVISION forever
It's interesting that Ian wrote about "Avenues lined with Trees" in The Only Mistake, and this... it was clearly an important thought for him.
Dang, chills down my spine and to see them guys smiling and enjoying themselves brings me tears of joy that these brilliant musicians had really fun times together.
Miss you Ian
Rip Ian this is the best version!!
Raw and natural, a true demo tape. Absolute gold.

JOY DIVISION EVER!
This is the greatest rock song ever written. I hope one day through technology we can have a proper Ian Curtis vocal. I love the Galaxie 500 version just as much. But the song has a longing and plaintive beauty that is heartbreaking
There is their last gig's Ceremony (1st line can be heard only by flooding mics) on 'Still' and one normally recorded tape (this cass recording) as they reheals it where's Ian on vocals.
I have had these all nearly 25 years. And I have remastered this tape also. I just don't know where it is but it's not a question... just a meaning of to an end.
So as I listen my first vinyl ever, Ceremony's (almost fully listened second pressing) it's great to see that "Music written by Joy Division"... So they made kinda a cover from it.
And so they really did.
"Chicken's won't stop"-record pressing's note between the track & ... as "Wish You Were Here" on b-side.

***** Yeah, the difference between the two is very evident. I posted Sumner's interpretation so that I could see the difference. And for others as well. I read the entry in wikipedia, "

Not again, but we will be here.
Travel fast and no-one stopping.
Turn again and turn towards this time.
I'll break them all, no mercy shown.
Heaven knows, it's got to get closer.
What she heard, the things they did.
The times she cried.
Too frail to wake this time.
I'll break them all, no mercy shown.
Heaven knows, it's got to be closer.
Avenues all lined with trees.
Picture me and then you start watching.
Watching forever, watching forever.
Everything, let it be so.
For everything, let it be so.
Let it be so, let it be so

Wow this actually sounds really accurate, did you transcribe it yourself or did you get this version from somewhere?
Here's what I think it is, from a mixture of already transcribed lyrics and what I could hear:
This is why it feels unnerving
Then again the same old story
This is why the wheels are turning
Turn away, turn towards this time
Listen now, the saviour calling,
Time again, and he would be here,
Travelled fast, but now I'm stopping,
Think again and change its way this time
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
Heaven knows it's got to get closer
Watching her, a sinking ship
The times she cried, too frail to wake this time
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
Heaven knows he's got to be stronger
Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me, and then you start watching
Watching forever
Watching forever
I was told, where your faith goes
Now I was told, may it be so
Truth be told, shall it be so
Holy Crap, we all could use a hug forever.
This song and band both brilliant it's almost like he knew or had a premonition his time was up literally stirs every emotion imaginable into me when I listen to this song
Este tema desde el.primer día que lo escuche me erizó la piel, la melodía puede estar en tu cabeza todo el día, sin chocar con ninguna de las paredes de tu cerebro, fluyendo.
