    The reason some roads are so narrow is that they were first established centuries ago as footpaths, for people and horses, linking villages with market towns. Later, they became highways for horse-drawn carriages, and finally, relatively recently, for cars. Ancient hedges on either side of these road are important, and in some case, protected, habitats for wildlife and flowers.

    It's great seeing my home county through the eyes of an American. It must seem so alien. I remember my first trip to the states, I felt like I was in another world! Love the vid!

    Very much enjoyed your video. I live in London but we love visiting both Devon (Sidmouth and Okehampton are favourites) and Cornwall. Have you visited Penlee Gallery in Penzance? Well worth a visit. A book I enjoyed last time we were in Port Isaac was "A Cornish Childhood" by AL Rowse - the author was born in 1903 and he writes about what it was like growing up in a small Cornish village.

    Didn't you meet any cars coming the other way or even a lorry or were you lucky?

      I think we were lucky for the most part, we did meet other cars and lorries on occasion, but just not many on the tight bits. Thanks for watching!

    Cornish lanes are set deep between high banks, partly from erosion of the track over time, but mostly to give shelter from the Atlantic gales . It does make a motor tour of Cornwall rather pointless as you won't see anything unless you stop or reach the coast.

    Next time you listen to ed Sheeran "Castle on the Hill" driving down country lane at 90. Think about these road 😀. In truth it's actually pretty scary that these would almost exclusively have a 60 mph speed limit.

    • @TravelingBeardos
      @TravelingBeardos  3 роки тому

      I'm positive I didn't drive anywhere near 60 mph....90 would be suicidal!! Thanks for watching!

      @@TravelingBeardos Would also be illegal and incredibly stupid as the maximum legal limit on a sing carriageway is 60. However, many experienced drivers would not go at even close to the speed limit on windy narrow lanes, as it risks crashing into a pedestrian, a cyclist, another motor vehicle, or a ditch (especially on bends).

      You have to drive according to the conditions on these roads. Anyone doing anywhere near 60 could be done for dangerous driving. I use lanes like these every day and no one would drive that fast.

      @@Lily-Bravo sorry, but I beg to differ. Firstly, I assume that the roads to which you refer are national speed limit, therefore a 60 limit. If you are driving sensibly then yes I agree that you should drive to the conditions. However youth and sensibility are often diametrically opposed. There is a bend on a country road not far from me where the challenge was to get round it at "60"- it's known as the 60 bend locally. Quite often, with modern machinery these were at speeds well in excess of 90, with the use of spotters.

      @@andrewrobinson-morris1852 What part do you differ on? Maybe I should have said that had your driving at 60mph on a rural road caused an accident then you would be done for dangerous driving. I would hate to think that while I am driving carefully with grandchildren in the car an idiot is seeing what speed he can get away with in the opposite direction on our rural roads. It's bad enough nowadays as it is with worrying about breaking down on the motorways.
