    NO do not pour molten bismuth in water!!! you will get a very painful experience involving hot water and hot bismuth.

    so many lifters are almost microscopic, ive often wondered if the bismuth plates being heavier, or in a different configuration would work better with a larger air gap. you did a great job thank you

    Hi Russ, Nice clean bench.Beautiful experiment.It reinforce Keshe hypothesis's that gravity is simply magnetism.I read his first book and it makes a lot of sense. Levitation is simply magnetic control.It would seem that Bismuth reduces the mag field between the top magnet and earth (bottom magnet) The height of the top magnet adjusts (controls) the attraction.When it floats the earth and top magnet fields are at equal strength. You have demonstrated gravity versus magnetism very well.

    Thanks. Another fine video! My levitation experiment was placing some doughnut shaped Radio Shack magnets on a wooden dowel. So crude in comparison. (Also, I read how some people get excellent production using bismuth as the anode in HHO cells...) You amaze us. You constantly make off the cuff remarks like "by the way I machined these on a lathe." All these skills you take for granted. Your ability to analyze data and produce something new is a great gift/result of hard work!!!

    Thank you for the super work. I like it to see other people having fun with physic like I have, so I feel not totally crazy when do it. And I think I have to buy a pound Bismuth too. :-)

    Maybe this could have an application on a flywhel energy storage plant. You could have a large flywheel suspended in a vacuum environment, when renewable energy like windmills are producing more than consumed the flywheels could be accelerated with the excess energy, and during peak hours the energy could be drained and put back on the grid.

      The only issue is the coupling between them and the flywheel. I do believe Flywheel Energy Storage is used on Satellites.

    Relatively moving masses of bismuth will set up a "time dependent" force field which neutralizes the ambient gravitational field. This is the claim of Henry Wm. Wallace in his 1971 USA patent for what he called a "kinemassic" field generator. This device not only can neutralize the gravitational field felt by an aerospace vehicle, but also has another interesting effect: It is said to be able to eliminate the "inertial" effects or the effects of acceleration felt by persons or objects inside the vehicle. This is the only known technology that provides superefficient aerospace propulsion, while also protecting the passengers and crew from inertial hazards. The field effect occurs when the rotor/stator made of bismuth or other half integer spin nuclear isotopes, is spun up to a high rate at very close tolerances. The rate must be at 30,000 rpm or greater I think. This seems very high and of course it can be dangerous if not done properly. New counterrotating power saws, however, have very high RPM and with counterrotation the RPM of one blade opposes the RPM of the other blade, effectively doubling the "relatively moving mass" RPM in the twin blade system of these saws. Tolerance between the two blades is probably not adequate; should be very close, as I understand it. But another possibility arises: The idea that during the spinup, and by running the device for some time, the "kinemassic" field effect claimed by Wallace could be achieved at somewhat lower RPM and perhaps at less demanding close tolerances between the two relatively moving masses' surfaces of the device. This type of device was tested perhaps 20 years ago by a lab physicist and was claimed to show the field effect, although only to some minimal extent. Later, the physicist or theorist who had tested the setup removed his video from the internet and requested that everyone who had linked to it must remove all links to avoid his being the butt of jokes or something of that nature. The inventor, Henry Wm. Wallace, was a well established electronics engineer at General Electric in Pennsylvania. I wrote to GE and received a polite letter back from them, saying that this was not an area of development for GE at that time. It was clearly not a form letter but rather what appeared to be a letter written specifically to reply to me on this particular topic, and was signed by an individual at GE rather than being simply some sort of auto response. The technology may already be in use or in R&D, I just have no way of knowing, and clearly it would be held secret by the military and govt until such time as it might be considered safe and prudent to publicize it. There's no doubt HWW had something important; he was a top engineer and had other patented devices. When I looked for his patent in Colorado, I had to go to the patent library in Denver and get it from microfiche, because the patent itself had been torn out of the patent book in the university library. I have the full Henry Wm. Wallace patent for this device and can send you a copy of it. Previously I had typed up the entire patent online and put it on my Geocities account, but as soon as I did this, Yahoo bought out Geocities and immediately shut it down. There are other places you can find that patent and patent drawings online today though.

      **BY THE WAY** -- this patent polarizes/aligns the atoms of Bismuth by way of the unmatched proton in the nucleus. Since protons have a positive (+) electrical polarity, electrons - which have negative (-) electrical polarity -- might be a better way to polarize the Bismuth atoms since in electricity, "unlike charges attract".
      This is a piece of a downed UFO. It is a laminate (stacked layers) of Bismuth and a metal conductor made of a Magnesium/Zinc alloy. This is several layers of 'sandwiched' Bismuth + Magnesium/Zinc.

      **BY THE WAY** -- the author of the article above about the laminated Bismuth + Magnesium/Zinc sandwich claims that it probably couldn't be produced on Earth. That is not correct.
      For a few decades, a metallurgy process known as "thin film deposition", that uses machines called "Sputters", can easily produce the very thin layers of Bismuth and Magnesium/Zinc in the UFO chunk of material.
      Here is a Sputter 'target' of Bismuth -- if you search "Bismuth Sputter target" online you'll see that these Bismuth sources used in thin-film deposition are widely available:

    Really well done Rus ! You are really a great builder ! Try to remagnetize the floating magnet with an AC pulse, overimposed over the DC pulse ! This way you will get a magnet that will start to spin from itsself cause it will have spiral fields on the outside !
    Something simular Flyod Sweet has done to create a magnetic bubble in hios material !

    Thanks, just the height seemed impressive for a lift. I do understand (at least the end result) of the balancing act you so nicely demonstrate. If there would be any way to get some high-newton leverage, even with minute spacing, that'd be so friggin' cool. Imagine a train with most of its weight in the chassis, which has been magnetized as well as carrying a base of neo's. Then a magnetized confining rail track, and (semi)permanent leverage...

    PaulsLab did same set-up April 14 2010, using wood and all thread rods, same size square magnet that levitated as well. Nothing is new under the sun.

    Did not read every comment but I did not see any comments on the increased distance of magnetism that the top magnet had on the bottom magnet by putting the field threw bismuth. It would be interesting to see if the field dynamics changed on either magnet do to the bismuth.

    Nice. I will build this myself but I was wondering what happens if you let bismuth cool down in the presense of a strong magnetic field. Anyone tried that?
    I don't understand why people think this is fake. Diamagnetism is a well known property some materials do possess. Even water does, albeit it's rather minimal.

    is it possible to take this idea and reconfigure the setup so that something (like a lightweight pole) is levitating and straight up and down with nothing below the pole? so the magnets are either below the pole or on the bottom of the pole.

    i wonder what happens if instead of a cube it would be that spinning disc in the middle helped by this effect.
    also i wonder if the bismuth shapes work reversed in orientation :) maybe flip them, they seem to guide the magnetic flux.
    maybe when you heat the bismuth, you can cover the top with some fluid that will not mingle and burn the bismuth, just to seal it airtight while heating maybe the effect will remain stronger more pure.
    maybe the shape of a tesseract made from bismuth with the inner cube extruded could be something to try out aswell.

    I'm not sure on your question. I would think it would not be to much. I do know that what ever the LPM more Pressure would help! Always did with my setup. But don't go over 15 PSI. That's a safe zone. I might guess 10 LPM would cover it well. But I'm just not sure... Test time I guess... ~Russ

    If the bismuth would magically disappeared, both cones, would the little magnet still be attracted up that height?
    I love this stuff. I want to come across a low-energy maglev alternative. Preferably no-energy. For vacume tube transport. Replace Concorde by a vacume tube system, and have quicker cross-Atlantic transits. And, I'd revolutionize outdoor sport by eliminating wheels from skates, and snow from skis, plus the combination of both :-)

    pyrolitic graphite has about twice the diamagnetic properties of bismuth. I love this metal. 83 baby!

    Thanks for the reply, I did get my 1/2" long by 3/8" round levitating later last night between the bismuth. It was a small unimpressive gap so I am going to order a small cube like yours. I also put some pyrolitic graphite top and bottom on the bismuth and did increase the gap 2X so I am exited to see how large of a gap I can achieve with the small cube magnet.

    cool, im thinking of a floating small earth-globe gimmick right away :)
    Ok also a HHO related Q: im planning to build a HHO torch, and i need it to be able to cut sheet metal ( as used in shipping containers, 2mm thick ) like a knife through hot butter, how many liters/min do you think i need for this? Im looking for the "cutting alu-can with lots of hho" lightsaber-type effect with the sheet metal.. What do you think? Any estimates are appreciated..

    Very nice! I may be making something like this in the future, I have the bismuth, magnets and spare plexiglass. How about the round smooth bottom of an aluminium soda can as a form to pour the bismuth into? The only thing I melted bismuth with so far is the sun and a giant lens, btw I posted videos about that.

    I saw some monks levitate a cube magnet by combining a huge amount of small pieces of bismuth together; both above and below the magnet. They then used some kind of sound tube; which they hit with a stick and then spun the stick around the tube causing it to ring (like a singing bowl), and it had the effect of making the magnet spin. Anybody seen this video? What is happening that causes the magnet to spin and why does sound have this effect?
    It would seem it naturally spins, but in the above stated video the cube was still before they create the sound waves.

    What if you were to use a sphere version of the neodymium magnets that reduce the air friction when spinning? You could potentially get the magnet to rotate freely for many hours. maybe mark each half so you can see the sphere spin. I would love to see that.

      Joe Richey taking a shot in the dark here, but I think only a cube shaped magnet can be used in this particular application; perhaps because of the orientation of the magnetic field in each shape. A sphere might get pushed out rather than spin and remain in the same general area; however that is just a wild guess. I definitely want to try this experiment out for myself, and I have both cube and sphere magnets. Guess there's only one way to find out.

    Man is the weight of the sistem diferent after you put the element in ??? I mean do you think that it is posible that the objeck weight less when it is in the sistem ??

    Suck a vacuum in the acrylic container...should spin indefinitely, right? Desktop conversation piece, probably marketable. Lots of possibilities.

    Try it in a vac and has a higher repellent feild when hot, shame the magnet don't.
    Can you flake it and get it to float on the magnet have you seen the p grafite (I think the P was for power) becouse the magnet span fast when hit with electricity following John searls works and it looks like the grafite still holds those empty holes wow also work when hit with light laser like.

    Dude. So i tryed it not making the bismuth like you did and it not working. I didn't use the same neodymium magnets. Must i stick to the exact shapes and strength? At this point mine would just jump from the bottom to the top when ajusting the top neo. What's am i doing wrong? Grate work by the way. =)
