- During its 20-year journey through space, the Cassini spacecraft completed approximately 300 orbits around Saturn over a span of 13 years.
On October 15, 1997, a rocket carrying the Cassini-Huygens unmanned probe was launched from Florida, USA. Cassini-Huygens finally reached Saturn's orbit in February 2004.
In October 2012, Cassini witnessed the aftermath of a massive storm known as the "Great White Spot," which occurs approximately every 30 years on Saturn.
In 2013, Cassini captured the highest-resolution video of Saturn's peculiar hexagonal storm.
However, by 2017, Cassini's fuel was running out. To prevent biological contamination of Saturn's moons, some of which could potentially harbor life, a decision was made to carry out the "Grand Finale."
On September 15, 2017, in its final orbit, Cassini provided a live broadcast of its descent into Saturn's atmosphere, ultimately becoming a part of the planet as it burned up.
