This audio track is from their 5th studio album "Once" (2004), then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005 - you just heard her. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile). There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I remember recommending the live versions of either 'Romanticide' or 'Ghost Love Score'. When you watch and hear them play their songs live, you'll understand why it's a good idea to react to the live performances. Also, the song you listened to was sung by their original singer, Tarja Turunen. She is a great singer, but she left the band in 2005. Their current singer is Floor Jansen. It would be a good idea to listen to her as well. Not to compare singers, but to understand what the band sounds like these days. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I'm sure. I think we should ask the Amry to select NW songs from a small preselection instead of diluting the votes over the huge quantity of songs NW and Floor have created. Are you up for it to spread the word? I don't really care which song we preselect as long as Song of Myself is on the shortlist ;-)

The current singer, the “hot” one, is Floor Jansen (“Yansen”). There was another singer between these two……. but some of us won’t recommend watching her…. To see Tarja singing live, try their version of Phantom of the Opera, 2005. Gabriel will have it in his list!

Yes, Nightwish is a fantastic live band, but I'm happy that you started out with the album version of one of their songs. Personally, I love their albums, and play them in order of release on a continuous basis in my car. Having said that, please check out their live performances. Wacken (pronounced: Vah-kin) is a good starting point with their current lead singer, the Valkerie goddess, Floor Jansen.

Let me take a SWAG - it was Martine who suggested this band.😊🤘 I very much doubt that she suggested this song though. It's one of those rather simpler headbanging ones. Definitely not the top of what they can do. For a song to react to with your GF I would suggest "She is My Sin" 😁 live from Wacken 2013. People always recommend live versions with this band, not the studio ones, and there is a reason for it, about 1.8m tall one. The sound quality is great and the show is a big part of the experience, it doesn't take away from the music, it enhances it. Give it a try.
Tarja (the first singer) you just listened to is awesome. But their current third singer (Floor) is out of this world! On studio album the band is great, but live they really take off. In other words: this was very nice, but you will be pleasantly surprised once you get to a live performance by Floor.

Can't believe this was what you got the most recommendations for. Whether it was Tarja or Floor this would not be my first choice. Try to stick with LIVE for this group. Studio does not have the same punch here. Most of the groups I listen to I would go for studio but no way with nightwish. I think they let the songs evolve when done live.

I mean I do like this song, it has nice energy and all the right elements for me, but I would say it shows you less than 5% of what makes Nightwish Nightwish. Do a few songs from the Wacken 2013 show, doesn't matter which ones, to get a slightly better idea of why they are loved so much.
