testing this 520 plus & Wahoo bolt and gotta say i really want to like the Bolt b/c of reading many negative past reviews of Garmin. But the 520 plus for me really is better. Why? 1. Maps are more detailed while riding anywhere it gives you the names of upcoming streets. 2. Garmin has a incidents detects feature that allows 3 people to be notified if it detects trouble, i've tested it myself. 3. If you purchase the Varia radar/light product now you have a rearview radar warning for upcoming vehicles & that works great giving you extra peace of mind. And the Bolt just basically is dependant on the app & riding applications such as Strava to complete it. Ex. There's no connection between Wahoo the website & the app. Where as with Garmin's website I'm able to view a whole new world such as Dashboard for all of my rides, connections, training, health stats, groups, training which provides you with riding maps info just by typing in your location then choosing a course then sync/ uploading/ sending it to your device all in 1 location.
Yea that’s exactly what I have experienced aswell. People keep recommending the Wahoo Bolt over any Garmin and they swear on it. But for myself I really like the coloured maps and etc.
Great review, great information too. After watching I decided to check out the 820 because I want to tour with it and have the ability if needed to enter an address and have it take me there. But what's upsetting is after I read all the comments below, and elsewhere, is that it seems most people hate the Garmin, it's slow, it has poor to incredibly bad navigation, to people who just plain hated it. Then I read other places that Garmin customer service is the worst of the worst. Wow, I never thought Garmin would be that far out of the sewer with a product. So now after thinking about it, I'll just buy Adventure Cycling touring maps...yes paper maps, I was brought on paper maps so using those again will be no big deal. Then I can resort to my phone if I need to be taken to a particular address. That's really too bad, I was looking for something convenient to use while touring but everything I've read here and elsewhere is that these GPS computers are just plain bad, so why spend $500 for something that's just going to be an irritation?
Got the 820, navigation is pretty poor and point of interest simply takes too long to use whilst you wait. Too much data and results in loading time which is slower as an 1989 Macintosh. Coupled with poor battery and touch screen I’ll be looking at getting this unit or even the wahoo mid year
Similar experience. The touch screen on the 820 is not good enough and reduce quite a lot the battery life, after 1 year the battery life is quite poor. I would not pay extra money for the 820.
Great video, thanks. When is the head to head video vs. the Bolt coming that you mentioned at the end? I've just ordered the Bolt but I'm now unsure, particularly wrt navigation.
Do you think they will update the software of the non plus 520 to include some of the new features such as the adjustable size data fields? This is something i have always wanted.
thanks for the video and your article, (did the followup "real review"ever happen? can't find it on your site). my questions: 1) if you don't need turn-by-turn, can you disable it and save battery, but still just see a map and where you are on the map? i'm a mountain biker and just want to follow a trail, i don't need turn by turn, i just want to follow the trail and find my way back to it if i go the wrong way 2) is it easy/possible to save battery by keeping the screen on, and only turning it on when you need to look at the stats? 3) i ride a lot both in EU and north america. seems like the single-region thing is a pain. you're saying you need to use 3rd party software every time you want to switch? is it a lot of hassle? is there a difference in quality of the maps using the 3rd party? thank you!
Thank you Wahoo for pushing Garmin to make better products...The Edge 130 is something a lot of retired Edge 500 users may enjoy. Despite their efforts, I still think an Android based system would suit better for navigation due to the Google Maps standard. Hammerhead Karoo would be that option but they don't make a sleek of a product compared to Wahoo or Garmin. btw, I guess Garmin adjusted the prices? The 520 Plus is now $329
Ray... I just picked up the edge 520 plus. It reroutes on the fly which is awesome. However I can't seem to find the Yelp app installed onto my device and it's not in the connect store. Any idea when they might actually release it to the device?
Hi, great review. I currently have the 520 which elevation gets screwed up when the unit is in the rain. I have to always use the strava elevation correction tool once I get home. Some say it's the barometric sensor that gets clogged up with water. Does this have the same issue. Thanks so much if you have any info on this.
I found the Edge 520 almost useless for navigation. When i try and use it for navigating it usually fails and i ride around completely lost. My main issue is the small and low res screen makes it too hard to use. They should skip the navigation altogether and save it for the big screened 1030.
Is the issue that you get lost because it fails (how? loses signal? skips turns? doesn't keep up?) or that you get lost because you miss turns because it's small and hard to see?
Ah, I use wahoo element for a year. And what's really annoying is you need to create trainings in TP, routes (w turn by turn navigation) in kamoot and so on. Garmin has all this feature in the box. But wahoo simplicity is the case.
Just to be clear. If I have my phone with me how complicated it is to navigate to specific location. Is it fast process like I choose location on the phone and already have course from my current location which I upload on the Garmin? Another question - if I miss the turn will Garmin: a) show me turn by turn how to get back to the point where I left the course, b) show me turn by turn how to get to the course but not to the point where I left but the closest point of the course to my current location or c) just tell me that I left the course and won't tell me how to get back.
do you know what is better for cycling I always used edge 820 but now that I have a fenix 5s I wonder which device I should keep I do enjoy the bigger screen of the bike edge compare to the watch but should I ditch the edge since I got a fenix?? are the edge more accurate ? or its just a bigger screen to see while riding?
Hey, I have a Pioneer power meter and I can't decide between the pioneer computer and the garmin 520 plus. The mapping ability as well as the fact almost everyone I know uses Garmin Connect is making me lean towards buying the Garmin. Would I miss out on a lot of the specific Pioneer data if I chose the Garmin?
How does the app syncing between the unit and smartphone both iOS and Android? As part of the reason why I shun out from Garmin is caused of the nightmare stories I heard on their mobile apps and sync issues. Also, what are the options to extend this unit battery life for those who need it? With the Wahoo you can just plug in an external power bank while the unit is recording the ride.
I use the 520 almost every day. The battery is so poor that in the winter it only lasts 6 hours. I had another replaced on warranty, and the exact thing happened, so not isolated.
Hi, I have a quick question that may be you could help with; Which Edge units currently support a mirror display function please, ie, I record my Triathlon race on my Forerunner 935 , with the Tri HRM on and in use. While on the bike leg I want to see the details on an edge unit with out having to look down at my wrist and loose rhythm/change aero tuck, then when I go to the run, just rack the bike and head off with out having to remove my watch from the bike or faff about wasting time?? Thanks.
Ahh okay, so if I understand the current situation, none of the Edge line of products, currently available for purchase, are able to mirror the display from the Forerunner??
Can you move the map or just zoom? (the old 520 with OpenStreetMap could also only zoom) Can you use turn notifications with third party maps (e.g. open street maps)?
Do these things track you if you don't use a route? I mean how Strava tracks you from record to stop, i never put a route in because I wander and explore. I want Garmin to track my random wanderings, does it do that? I'm asking because my eye is on the 520 and the Fenix 3, I just want to make sure.
Yup, no need to use a route. You can stop/start a route/navigation mid-ride if you'd like, or not use one at all (many of my rides I don't use a route).
I m considering getting a bike computer, i use a old sigma Bc 12 and my phone currently, but i m worried about the edge 52) autonomy, the 520 autonomy (with gps) was very very poor. So if anyone has information about it, especially after 1 year or more of utilisation. I will check DC handwritten review .
I personally don't keep my smart phone out. The reason someone like me is looking for a Garmin 520 plus is because: 1) I want to see live data of my speed, cadence, and heart rate 2) I want to see a live map with directions, especially as I'm getting into longer rides where I pre-plan my route before I leave 3) Leaving your smart phone turned on with a map or strava open, also in direct sunlight, just wait and see how hot your phone is going to be when you stop and take it off of the bike. For me in 95 degree heat in direct sun on a lot of my rides, I wouldn't risk my phone getting killed over that.
Seems that Garmin has failed to really improve this unit over the old 520. Still seems sluggish when loading, with the same lag when using the buttons. Hope navigation is better, the old 520 is way too buggy and cannot distinguish corners from turns. It does pack a lot of features, but is not user-friendly enough. Modifying data fields is quite cumbersome for instance. Seems like development has been standing still at Garmin. Pity because the old edge 500 was a real leap forward...
Routing on the 820 had been so incredibly bad and disappointing. It was the unit but also on/for Connect. I don't trust Garmin's ability to implement anymore and solely rely on GMaps and brief analog notes in unknown areas.
I agree. Strava routes to the Garmin was OK but otherwise it was poor. If this hardware is slower than the 820 than routing on the 520 Plus will be agonizingly slow.
Does anybody know how to get a ride to Strava from a phone? I've damaged my Garmin so I can't download the rides to Strava through my computer. I was able to send the rides to my phone and then Email the ride to my computer. But I still haven't been able to get it to my Strava profile. I tried to go through Garmin support but they were worthless with an attitude If I can't solve this problem I will have to buy another. Which is frustrating since I bought this one only a few months ago.
I still use the Edge 200 and look at my roads the old fashioned way my memorizing the roads and going from there. I like the way this looks but I don't have a smart phone. Not sure if this would be worth it.
I don't see why we don't just have a small chip surgically implanted in our foreheads so we can listen to music, talk to our friends, play video games, see our stats, have water bottle fill percentages, reminders for how and when we should eat........ Let's just be computers! It's kind of comical! Good review though, thanks!
I've grown to hate my 520 after 8 months...... Can't stand it bleeping at me every 2 minutes.... Good, message from, phone disconnected....... What a pain in the arse....+ really crap battery 🔋 life Gonna buy an Element Bolt..... 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
Still riding with a Garmin Edge 705 for nearly 8 years battery still last 4 ever and never have been changed (yes you can change the battery) routing is still on top not needed a high tech bike gps i have phone with me in cause i have lost i use Gmap
Do you have to get riding for the maps to start showing? i have uploaded a route from strava and when i load the course, on my garmin, I cant get turn by turn navigation maps going?
I prefer to explore and just use my Edge 25 I bought for £65 in a sale. I’ll use my iPhone X if I get lost. What we want is a 520 size that does mapping! Should have called the 520 plus something else.
Still playing catch up with Bryton530 LOL :) Battery life on the Bryton absolutely destroys the Garmin. I did a 24hr race with the Bryton and it still had 2/3 battery left at the end. Dudes using the Garmin had to recharge 3 times in the same race!!! LOL
Sad, slight upgrade in my opinion, although I am not interested in the maps feature on a bike computers anyway. we need a camera instead of the radar it's 2018 already....
ok, I know a bunch of guys with the bolt and non have mentioned any bugs and neither has anyone with a Element. Everyone I know with a garmin complains about bugs and failures. I just had Garmin refund me for my 1000 as non of the units (4 replacements) ever worked properly
I have got an Edge 520 Plus and still have connection issues. I cannot for the life of me understand why every Bluetooth speaker or earphone can connect pair and connect in a split second apart from being too far away from the phone to stay connected through whatever might happen. Still, these blo*dy bike computers cannot manage to connect correctly every single time if they are sitting right next to my phone on my desk. Let alone out on a ride when I really am not in the mood to start fiddling with tiny buttons and 'wait' - like 10mins on the side of the road - before anything happens...
George Pantazis wahoo is just as bad as far as malfunction. I had one for a year and a half and screen completely gave out on me. Warranty was expired so I’m stuck with a $250 piece of junk. I’d say aim low and get minimal computer if you don’t want to use your smartphone.
I know there are lots of information, but the speed of your presentation makes it difficult to follow them. You might be an expert of the product, the watcher might not be. Slow it down a bit, please? I don't have the edge 520 either! The speed of your presentation became just like a blur, you mentioned about the map can guide you home, but make no mention how to set that up which I think would be very useful? Furthermore, what button you are pressing on the machine no one can see as there are 6 buttons! No use at all sorry!
testing this 520 plus & Wahoo bolt and gotta say i really want to like the Bolt b/c of reading many negative past reviews of Garmin. But the 520 plus for me really is better. Why? 1. you're one of the best reviewers on youtube. thanks
520 plus vs bolt? Which one would you choose? Thanks and great video!
Great deal. Just right size for us. Wish we had bought one sooner.
A shark riding a bike?! Now I've seen everything!
Basically a 820 without the touchscreen, maybe an answer to those who dissed the 820's laggy touchscreen response
Great review, great information too. After watching I decided to check out the 820 because I want to tour with it and have the ability if needed to enter an address and have it take me there. Nice review. Good to see that much Garmin haters from the comments, first time feel that I’m not alone.
wow! nice video DC! wish my review videos were this good😕

Coming up soon! With the Edge 520 Plus being delayed, I wanted to wait for them to start shipping before I put together a video on it.
Are any of these extra features worth it when we all ride with our phones? In fact isn’t an iPhone 5SE the best “cycling” computer we can buy still?
that's what i was wondering...
Very good reviews! Thank you
Do you think they will update the software of the non plus 520 to include some of the new features such as the adjustable size data fields? This is something i have always wanted.
Kevin Mills
Shouldn't have bought the 520 then... I've grown to hate mine...
See comment below.
520 plus has different hardware inside so I guess no.
thanks for the video and your article, (did the followup "real review"ever happen? can't find it on your site).
my questions:
1) if you don't need turn-by-turn, can you disable it and save battery, but still just see a map and where you are on the map? i'm a mountain biker and just want to follow a trail, i don't need turn by turn, i just want to follow the trail and find my way back to it if i go the wrong way

3) i ride a lot both in EU and north america. seems like the single-region thing is a pain. you're saying you need to use 3rd party software every time you want to switch? is it a lot of hassle? is there a difference in quality of the maps using the 3rd party?
thank you!
Nice review. Did you do the comparison video with the Wahoo?
Great review. I wonder if it can be connected to a trainer thru bluetooth. It is the gold question.
Thank you Wahoo for pushing Garmin to make better products...The Edge 130 is something a lot of retired Edge 500 users may enjoy. Because it is hard to see. Also the device lacks processing power and freezes up often if it is following a large complex route.
Never used the maps on my 520 cos the screen is shite.... Can't stand it bleeping at me every 2 minutes either..
I have a 24 hour road race event coming up. Can I install all street turn points for the entire ride I will be riding?
Thanks!

When the lifecycle of the battery is exhausted, can the battery be replaced by the user or do you have to send it back to Garmin?
Will this work with the ultegra di2 hood buttons to flip through screens?
is this working as well for a mountain hike?
do you know what is better for cycling I always used edge 820 but now that I have a fenix 5s I wonder which device I should keep I do enjoy the bigger screen of the bike edge compare to the watch but should I ditch the edge since I got a fenix?? are the edge more accurate ? or its just a bigger screen to see while riding?

Hi, any idea when the software upgrade is due for release to allow the 520 plus to be able to mirror the data from my Forerunner 935 please???
Do you expect a new 830 to be dropping soon?
Very good review, I have a question: is it possible to change the scale of the altimetry profile of the route as it is done in the 820?
great video

Ahh okay, so if I understand the current situation, none of the Edge line of products, currently available for purchase, are able to mirror the display from the Forerunner??
Can you comment on the GPS interference with the Bolt and the Cycliq Fly12CE?
Can you move the map or just zoom? (the old 520 with OpenStreetMap could also only zoom) Can you use turn notifications with third party maps (e.g. open street maps)?

Yup, no need to use a route. You can stop/start a route/navigation mid-ride if you'd like, or not use one at all (many of my rides I don't use a route).
You mention trendline popularity routing. Can someone help me find a way to do this? I have the 520 plus.
I use a Edge 520 Plus and it seems i can see the distance and time left to destination. It that possible?
I m considering getting a bike computer, i use a old sigma Bc 12 and my phone currently, but i m worried about the edge 52) autonomy, the 520 autonomy (with gps) was very very poor.
So if anyone has information about it, especially after 1 year or more of utilisation. I will check DC handwritten review .
A lot of the features are things that are much better done on your smartphone, and who doesn't ride with a phone anyways?
The pros do!
I personally don't keep my smart phone out. The reason someone like me is looking for a Garmin 520 plus is because:
1) I want to see live data of my speed, cadence, and heart rate
2) I want to see a live map with directions, especially as I'm getting into longer rides where I pre-plan my route before I leave
3) Leaving your smart phone turned on with a map or strava open, also in direct sunlight, just wait and see how hot your phone is going to be when you stop and take it off of the bike. For me in 95 degree heat in direct sun on a lot of my rides, I wouldn't risk my phone getting killed over that.
What about the ability to zoom the altitude profile elevation profile? And how about battery life?
To run strava live on the 520 plus, do you need to have a Strava Premium account?
Yes
Seems that Garmin has failed to really improve this unit over the old 520. Still seems sluggish when loading, with the same lag when using the buttons. Hope navigation is better, the old 520 is way too buggy and cannot distinguish corners from turns. It does pack a lot of features, but is not user-friendly enough. Modifying data fields is quite cumbersome for instance. Seems like development has been standing still at Garmin. Pity because the old edge 500 was a real leap forward...
it is necessary to update the base map?
¿Is the screen contrast better than the 520? The 520 could be better in low light conditions or when the sun is low.
Hello. I have bought 520 plus and navi works well. You can trust this model is really fast
Does anybody know how to get a ride to Strava from a phone? I've damaged my Garmin so I can't download the rides to Strava through my computer. It's 2018 yet Garmin still can't get turn by turn GPS to work properly, smh.
I still use the Edge 200 and look at my roads the old fashioned way my memorizing the roads and going from there. I like the way this looks but I don't have a smart phone. Not sure if this would be worth it.
Does it have the surprise me function too?
Trailforks app: so it shows just a list of nearby trails and you need to download them one by one ? doesn't show you a map with nearby trails ?
I don't see why we don't just have a small chip surgically implanted in our foreheads so we can listen to music, talk to our friends, play video games, see our stats, have water bottle fill percentages, reminders for how and when we should eat........ Let's just be computers! It's kind of comical! Good review though, thanks!
At 2:19, is that a hidemybell mount? Or is it another brand?
If I'm out how do I route my way back. Using the 520 Plus
Keith Miller Set yourself a favourite point where you can always route to, in this case your home
Can I use wikiloc on 520 plus?
Can somebody explain to me how can i just simply add a route to work or shop or town and add it to this device for 200£ it looks so difficult.
I've grown to hate my 520 after 8 months...... Can't stand it bleeping at me every 2 minutes.... Good, message from, phone disconnected....... What a pain in the arse....+ really crap battery 🔋 life
Gonna buy an Element Bolt..... 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
Andy Stone you can turn off the beeping. I did.
Still riding with a Garmin Edge 705 for nearly 8 years battery still last 4 ever and never have been changed (yes you can change the battery) routing is still on top not needed a high tech bike gps i have phone with me in cause i have lost i use Gmap

So. If I pull out my phone and type "elm street, Missouri" I can create a route and send it to the 520? Does it have rerouting?
If you watch the video he literally explains everything you just asked.
Great review but I think Garmin are still playing catch up with Wahoo. They're becoming more and more _"me too"_ with the 520.
There is no "catch up" here...
Still playing catch up with Bryton530 LOL :) Battery life on the Bryton absolutely destroys the Garmin. I did a 24hr race with the Bryton and it still had 2/3 battery left at the end. Dudes using the Garmin had to recharge 3 times in the same race!!! LOL
Absolutly! All those new units in a short time but the shitty software is still the same...
Maps weigh the same as 3 M&M's. Got it.
What’s this unit like in 2024? I can buy one for 50 bucks from a work friend.
wahoo all the way
Sad, slight upgrade in my opinion, although I am not interested in the maps feature on a bike computers anyway. we need a camera instead of the radar it's 2018 already....
Is there still a limit of 100 Sträva live segments?
I think that’s a Strava requirement not Garmin or Wahoo
Buggy software and kludgey interface. Waiting for A.I. and talking to it to get the information you want.
Ross Nicholson it will be a long wait...
Can I use Ridewithgps to load routes?
My Bolt is now up for sale.
mate I would hold off for 24 months to allow garmin to get all the bugs out of the software
The Bolt still has bugs, so why wait? :)
ok, I know a bunch of guys with the bolt and non have mentioned any bugs and neither has anyone with a Element. Everyone I know with a garmin complains about bugs and failures. I just had Garmin refund me for my 1000 as non of the units (4 replacements) ever worked properly
Wahoo ELEMNT users on Google Groups...
For how much? 😃
Is there a micro SD memory card ?
No. I just got one.
Still not as usable as the Wahoo with the phone app. Only issue that I have with the Wahoo, is the issues with assioma pedals.
That and STILL does not work with an SRM... And the on going bugs...
Soooo, just get a Wahoo? lol
George Pantazis wahoo is just as bad as far as malfunction. I had one for a year and a half and screen completely gave out on me. Warranty was expired so I’m stuck with a $250 piece of junk. I’d say aim low and get minimal computer if you don’t want to use your smartphone.
peux -ton avoir cette présentation avec un sous titrage en français merci
OH NO ...3 M&Ms of weight would completely ruin the entire balance of my bike.... Rats ....no 520+ for me!
Is it possible at all to talk any faster?
UA-cam has a speed option. Set it to 1.25
Talks so fast I had trouble understanding.
Increase volume please
get a garmin if you are rich and dumb, oh wait, Garmin is too complicated for dumbs, forget it just get a wahoo
On old record players you can turn the speed down from 78-16
This guy talks so fast it’s a case of in one ear, out the other.
Talk faster please
for $300 I'll just use my galaxy s10 5G
Not to log power heart rate and cadence while mapping in one app you wont
absolutely shite I'm sorry I've bought one, I've found it to be useless.
Waffle much?
slow down. Can't understand what you are saying.
Too many buttons on the 520 to be usable while riding. Get an 820 or higher with touchscreen.
Slow down dude, your speaking disoder is anoying
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it!
This device is absolutely useless. Your phone can 100 times more than this "GPS"
By the way: i have one for sale xD
Talks to fast and too much crap
Apple TV
I know there are lots of information, but the speed of your presentation makes it difficult to follow them. You might be an expert of the product, the watcher might not be. Slow it down a bit, please? I don't have the edge 520 either! The speed of your presentation became just like a blur, you mentioned about the map can guide you home, but make no mention how to set that up which I think would be very useful? Furthermore, what button you are pressing on the machine no one can see as there are 6 buttons! No use at all sorry!
