  • Quick little demo on how to refill a Bic lighter that I’m sure everyone has seen and used and is useful to have in the shop for lighting torches, your cigs, or maybe even a nice vanilla scented candle before taking that hot bubble bath at the end of a long work day. Right fellas?!?!? Right?!?

      Gotta be careful about that and make sure there are no leaks before you go lighting it. You gotta admit that it really gets your heart pumping and excites you a little when a big fireball erupts from the bottom of the lighter for about 1 and a half seconds till all the gas is burned up huh?!?! Soon as that's done with then you can promptly go and change your shorts cause there's a pretty good chance you Shat yourself when it happened. Happens to the best of us bud. Just be careful next time. Take care.

    The metal thumbtacks with the flat back work the best.

  • @enlightenedexceptionalism7206
    @enlightenedexceptionalism7206 4 роки тому +18

    Use the flat ones to seal better - I was going to try to add a bead of silicone or something on it's base when I reinsert it to make sure it stays in place, and with that - I think I can still pull it out again when I want to refill again. There are other videos on installing a refill valve - seems like a lot of work, but also seems worth it if that's the way you want to go.

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  4 роки тому

      Yeah I’ve seen the other vids and as long as you were able to find a valve and had the proper tools I don’t think it would be too difficult and for as much as I use mine and given what I use them for, it’s just easier for me to use a thumbtack and refill them like I always do. Takes all of 10 seconds to do once you have a good system down.

    I've drilled out the bottom and epoxy glued a refill valve from bbq lighters and have refilled and used the same bic for almost 2 years, used everyday. The flint is what will eventually run out, and good luck trying to replace a bic flint. One of the two most stolen objects in history. Bic pens and bic lighters.

      Replacing the Flint is simple as long as you have a steady hand and make sure to replace the wheel in the same direction as it was on before or else it won't spark the flint properly it's grooved in a certain direction so ya...also take the flint from any other old lighter

    I love genius little tricks like this. Well wouldn't you know it, I didn't have a thumb tack anywhere, only the sharp end of a drawing compass, which wasn't at all good due to the taper and the entire apparatus sticking out the end. Instead I used a small screw from some scrap electronics and a bit of tape with a hole in it for the gasket. Loses a bit of butane at first, but if you put enough in at once it stays a liquid long enough to turn the screw in there and keep a good amount. The things you learn on the internet. Thank you.

    Bic Lighters like everything else since the pandemic have seen price increases... No longer spending $1.25 per disposable lighter, now most stores in my area are pricing them at $2.50 or more. So yeah this little hack may come in handy when I find myself without a lighter that works.

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 8 місяців тому

      Bought like 10pcs a decade ago when I used to smoke for $0.50 a pop. Now they're sold for ~$2.20, pretty insane indeed. But I do find a lot of thrown lighters that are reusable and refill them, so I wish I did this sooner. Now I restore them just for fun and have a bucket of 40 atm. 😂 Love me some "CLIPPER reusable" and their spring-flint-strike tube is the best. 👌😘 Even BIC can't make the disposable lighters worth it. 👍

      I couldn’t tell you cause I never tried it. I honestly just think if it did work, you’d end up wasting a ton of butane because there would t be a tight seal and you gotta be holding the thumb lever down while holding the other can upside down and pressing down hard to try and get the gas in that little hole. Pulse I’m pretty sure those are check valves anyways. Meaning the gas can only flow in one direction but again, I can’t really say for certain because I never have done it. Give it a go and let me know what your results are ok.

      The Redstone Rebel if you hold your can of butane upright and you can somehow figure a way to get a tight seal around the fill valve of your broken lighter, all you have to do then is just push the lighter down on the valve on your can of butane and it will essentially empty the fluid from your broken lighter back into the can which then can be used to fill to good lighter, I’ve done this successfully with one of those long bbq lighters before.

    BIC really are about producing plastic waste in every product..aren't they. I mean, even their mid range 3 bladed razors that come in a plastic pack of 3, they come with 3 handles, despite the fact that the blades themselves are both meant to be removable, but also the sheathes they come with, clip on to each other. What a shitty company.

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  3 роки тому +3

      I don't believe it would "blow OFF'" your hand, but rather make an exciting flame-throwing fireball. Kind of like when you take a can of hair spray or some other pressurized can containing propellant and you spray it through a lit flame. That's when you remove the pin completely at least I mean but it only lasts a second till all the gas is expelled. Doubt it would do that from a small leak. That's not to say that the flame couldn't go back up inside while lit and cause the lighter to explode but again, don't think that's enough to actually blow your hand "OFF". All that said, that's only my observation from past experiences and opinions of my own. You should still do this at your own risk and take the necessary precautions.

    • @JPtheGamer650

      Personally not a fan either. But Clippers are fine as long as you don’t require having it lit for very long. Having the flame lit for roughly over 30 seconds melts the plastic. However I do like the removable flint stem on some of them that you can use as a “cigarette” packing tool. Also the ability to refill is obviously a plus.
