As much as I actually enjoy Die Antwoord's music and have since before they changed to Die Antwoord. This music video is truly disturbing in so many ways. The obvious is the sexualisation of a minor since she is dressed in a school uniform. In her flirtation and somewhat nonconsensual scene, she agreed to a cookie thumper, not a backdoor bang (her hol). The fact that they used a true Cape Flats gangster and even their open association with a truly notorious gang in South Africa The Americans 26's and 27's. Ansie (Andre) was an actual convicted killer and is now dead due to a gang-related drive-by shooting. In the numbers gangs 26s, 27s, 28s. 27s are the "mediators" between the two but are by far the most violent. Almost all have shed the blood of others but it's killing another opposing gang member that moves him to the rank of "blood". Murder, rape, theft, and severe sexual abuse are typical for Numbers. There are areas in the Cape Flats that even the police don't go to. Several murders weekly in those parts is the norm. So using a real active gangster (now deceased due to gang conflict) in a country where we suffer from a disturbingly significant amount of crime is not "Zef". Stick to Belville and drag racing, Zef is fine but actually using a gang member as the love interest in a music video, is not artistic. It's sickening.

Thanks for that background info, though I've heard versions of it before. That said, I must disagree with you on your last point. The fact that they've used a real gang member and killer is PRECISELY what elevates this video to legitimate art. Art isn't always nice, soft, or safe. The fact that it got a reaction out of you is intended and, really, the entire point. Kudos to them for having the balls to work with Andre. However, I am glad he got what was coming to him (live by the sword, die by the sword) and his death via gang shooting actually _adds_ to the artistic merit of this video in retrospect - it's more 'real' than most gangster rap these days and rivals the old school rappers that actually did hang with gangbangers or were legit gangsters themselves before getting out of that situation.

As much as I actually enjoy Die Antwoord's music and have since before they changed to Die Antwoord. This music video is truly disturbing in so many ways. The obvious is the sexualisation of a minor since she is dressed in a school uniform. In her flirtation and somewhat nonconsensual scene, she agreed to a cookie thumper, not a backdoor bang (her hol).
The fact that they used a true Cape Flats gangster and even their open association with a truly notorious gang in South Africa The Americans 26's and 27's. Ansie (Andre) was an actual convicted killer and is now dead due to a gang-related drive-by shooting. In the numbers gangs 26s, 27s, 28s. 27s are the "mediators" between the two but are by far the most violent. Almost all have shed the blood of others but it's killing another opposing gang member that moves him to the rank of "blood". Murder, rape, theft, and severe sexual abuse are typical for Numbers.
There are areas in the Cape Flats that even the police don't go to. Several murders weekly in those parts is the norm. So using a real active gangster (now deceased due to gang conflict) in a country where we suffer from a disturbingly significant amount of crime is not "Zef". Stick to Belville and drag racing, Zef is fine but actually using a gang member as the love interest in a music video, is not artistic. It's sickening.

Well, I mean, using some real criminal, defeats the purpose of art, where something is up to interpretation, so I agree on that being not save from critique when it comes to art. The title refers to the shown girl being under age (cookie thumper, as in girls scouts age where they go around, selling cookies), and him being a pedo. It lacks subtlety, to be art, but the song is still banger, lol.

Thanks for that background info, though I've heard versions of it before. That said, I must disagree with you on your last point. The fact that they've used a real gang member and killer is PRECISELY what elevates this video to legitimate art. Art isn't always nice, soft, or safe. The fact that it got a reaction out of you is intended and, really, the entire point.
Kudos to them for having the balls to work with Andre. However, I am glad he got what was coming to him (live by the sword, die by the sword) and his death via gang shooting actually _adds_ to the artistic merit of this video in retrospect - it's more 'real' than most gangster rap these days and rivals the old school rappers that actually did hang with gangbangers or were legit gangsters themselves before getting out of that situation.
