- Over the past two weeks, chaotic scenes of Russian tanks exploding and driving into minefields were recorded by Ukrainian military drones in Donetsk. Some Russian military bloggers have called it a fiasco, and it points to major failures in the Kremlin’s military tactics as it gears up for a spring offensive. Investor Bill Browder speaks with Walter Isaacson to discuss the effectiveness of the NATO allies’ sanctions on Russia and the pace of its assistance to Ukraine at this critical juncture.

I've always been impressed with Bill Browder's depth of understanding re: Russia& Putin - Kudos to Walter Isaacson for asking such intelligent questions that help me understand the nuances of such a multilayered situation - I am truly in debt, sir!

One small piece of info - it is “Ukraine,” not “The Ukraine.” They used to be “the Ukraine” when they were really nothing more than an extension of Russia. (Like how here in America, we’d say “the Southwest” when referring to that part of the country, not “Southwest.”)
They now prefer to be called “Ukraine” as a way of stating they are their own independent country (something Putin obviously needs help learning!)
The issue is not providing weapons that can reach Russian territory, but Russia is buying long-range weapons from Iran and North Korea.

Russia has been supporting Cuba since 1953, the US could easily invade and take over CUBA in about 45 minutes. Russia has been providing oil, weapons and military training for 70 years so shut it already with the Russia victim BS sob stories.

Russia's Finance Ministry said January 2023 government deficit was a record 1.8 Trillion rubles ($25B in USD). At that rate, and given their current reserves, Russia's Gov't will go bankrupt in the next year. People on government pensions are going to get screwed over.

Yes, we need to "confront this problem once and for all". But many key players are reluctant. The reason for the reluctance is not clear. Some think it is purely monetary, for example. Scholtz fantasizing about maintaining good, profitable relations with Russia after the war.
But I think the reason goes deeper than that. Half of Europe still does not quite believe what we are seeing unfold before our eyes: a total war against democracy and the "international order" that kept the peace in Europe for over 50 years.

As a Jew, I'm ashamed of Israel on too many counts. Racist, apartheid state who don't know who their only real ally is (hint, the US). Equally disappointed the US hasn't done more to pressure Israel. Israel has one of the most established air defense systems in the world... why is it not in Ukraine, especially with Iranian drones being used.

It's unbelievable how pootin is behaving like Hitler. russia suffered hugely under the nazi's. russia is using a nazi narrative to invade Ukraine whilst behaving like nazi's. Moreover, the West is behaving like Britain did, trying to avoid war by appeasement. pootin sees this as weakness which in turn makes him more aggressive. It's time for the civilized world to stop peeing their pants and give Ukraine all that it requires to win. They have never asked for one soldier from another country, although it welcomes any who volunteer.
He is a smart and wise and decent man. I found the vast majority of all that #TheResistance mess on Twitter during the Trump years to be too goofy for words, but discovering Bill Browder was a pleasant exception to the rule. His stories are not only true but riveting and wild and inspiring. Unlike myself, he is always reasonable too.
These Ukrainians are our allies, and we're an empire in decline. Making true friends can't hurt anyone in our position, if viewing these things strategically like a sociopath, or a Republican, is all this calculus comes down to as well.
And to these same Republicans that seem to have this unexplainable affinity for Putin, the international criminal, the dying gangster... do you not get who and what he is, and always has been, since he was first handed power?
Putin was freely given power by a western-friendly predecessor, with the hope that he'd take the former USSR into the future, going down this same path towards world peace and cooperation, binding our fates, prospering together. He quickly reevaluated his situation once he had that power, and he decided that he'd rather personally stack billions and personally have far more money and resources than he could spend in a thousand lifetimes, while forsaking the present and future good of his own massive country, wrecking the lives of all his countrymen... He IS a sociopath, he doesn't love anybody or anything, he is a monster, he exists only to serve his own psychopathic goals, Russia and the world will be infinitely better off once he is gone, and they can finally pursue their common good, rather than be a nation that exists to service one man.
Idolizing him, you may as well be slicing pentagrams into your skin and worshipping the devil, he is possessed by the devil, existing in this world in a demon state, if such things exist. He is evil. Not a man who sometimes does evil, but a full-time incarnation of evil, an avatar of Satan, avarice and pettiness and greed and hate, the complete willingness to torture all the billions, poor and weak, rich and strong, children, women... Putin and by extension RuSSia does not negotiate unless that negotiation is a total surrender or capitulation by the victim state to Putins greed and ambitions of empire. Constantly stating that Ukraine should sit and negotiate only comes from journalists or politicians who are clueless.
On UA-cam, I keep on seeing this one protester's sign that sums it up well: if Putin stops fighting, the war is over. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine is over.
This is the asymmetry lazy thinkers do not understand: for Russia, this is a war of a psycopath's delusions but for Ukraine, this is a war of survival.

Speed up the process it will cost less in the long run if you Can get Russia to withdraw. Russia only consists of Moscow and St Petersburg the rest is the third world level in every aspect. People with an education are running away because living in a cage even a golden one is devastating. It kills ones soul. Pregnant woman are flying to Argentina to give birth in the hope of citizenship. Society is falling apart make it faster.
Bill Browder as always is one of the most sensible and authoritative people on anything concerning Putin and how to deal with him, it was Browder after all who Putin asked Trump for at their July 16, 2018 meeting in Helsinki - Putin and his gang were heavily sectioned first by the US and many other countries via the Magnitsky Act which was lobbied heavily by Browder. Both Bill Browder and Julia Ioffe are great sources of info on Putin and his cabal.
It is exactly opposite: Biden and his gang. If you think Browder is source of info on Putin, you need to see a doctor in mental clinic.

I've come to appreciate Browders straight forward characterizations and suggested solutions. Pragmatic and goal oriented. Also justifiably vengeful for the imprisonment and assassination of his former lawyer friend who probed into the Russian corruption. And his championing the Magnitsky Act.

A Ukrainian friend told me about the Russian people and Putin 's hold over them. Like most abusive relationships - the abused both respects and fears the abuser strong man.And Putin will abuse them to death.
