Aussie Aussie but the Hungarians are the ones wearing black in the movie when they wore white in real life ... in water polo the dark color means you’re the ‘home’ team. The darker caps are usually nicer quality than white caps. I think this may have something to do with the way the movie is. Water polo player just feel more at home in dark caps.

"We decided to withdraw Russian myself, years later, recalled Ervin Zador. The plan was this: we play, they fight". We must admit that the Hungarians played really well: defended really well and used his chances, so in the second half of the meeting led with the score 4:0. And they did not hesitate to provoke opponents. They know Russian language, insulted and called names by Soviet athletes. Those long held back, but the atmosphere in the pool was obviously heated. Water Polo is a contact sport, and in the first half of the crowded hall saw a few minor skirmishes. To see the explosion, it was necessary only to bring the match...

  • @atelos1
    @atelos1 7 років тому +42

In 2002, the meeting was organized by members of the legendary match. Hungarian and Soviet water Polo players apologized to each other and forgot about the mutual claims. However, the events of that match has already entered the history of the sport. More dramatic match in the next 60 years, water Polo has not happened. A "Blood pool" has become one of the brightest events of the Olympic games in Melbourne and the history of the sport in General.

It' s from a movie that was made as a remembrance of the actual game in melbourne in 1956, Hungary vs Russia. The political background to it is that at the same time when the our "boys" were fighting in water polo against russia, Russian tanks arrived in Hungary to oppress the revolution started by Hungarian students against soviet occupation of our land! a tiny country against the Red Army., There were a lot of killings, tortures and we lived under soviet dictatorship for decades.

Hahaha, fucking brainwashed. Hungury during the 2WW was nazi country. And they killed a lot of Russians during the war.
And after Russia could do everything to the country that was aggressor before.
And Hungarians started to provoke, because they spoke Russian. To these Russians didn't matter what was happening in Hungary. It was no their business. It was political thing, not of the nation
Really brainwashed. You have to learn the history a little and don't watch that propaganda films.

“The first thing that struck Melbourne was a meeting with the Hungarians. We just flew in, go to training, they meet us - and turn away. Of course, we knew what was happening, but for us it was strange. It happens and is happening - but we are in completely different ways. Then their player, Markowitz, approached our captain Mshveniyradze - “Peter, we were instructed to ignore all Soviet athletes.” The ground for us to have a fight was ready, ”recalled 81-year-old Viktor Ageev, who missed that match but played in the decisive game for bronze against the Germans. The decisive match, which became the most famous in the history of water polo, remained undefeated.
The audience squeezed into the six-thousandth hall almost eight thousand - mostly it was the Hungarian immigrants who spoke Russian well. After the war, there were three Russian lessons per week in Hungarian schools - before the game, the Hungarians decided to crush the Soviet team.
“Our plan before the game was based on their verbal irritation. From 10 years old I studied Russian more than Hungarian. Can you imagine how in my 22 years I could infuriate the Russians with their own words? We had no doubt that they would begin to get angry and fight, ”Erwin Zador and his team did not hide the fact that they planned to insult their opponents in advance.
From the first minutes, the players in the water began to beat each other. True, according to the stories of Soviet players, the Hungarians acted as the instigators - Deje Dyarmati in the first half broke his nose to blood to Peter Mshvenieradze. “This was a signal. Divided into pairs (each one chose a player against whom he acted in the match), we chased each other throughout the pool, trying to hook our counterpart so that it didn't seem enough. The Swede Zuckerman was the judge, as it turned out, an ardent anti-Soviet who judged in one direction, ”recalled the Soviet goalkeeper Boris Goikhman.
“The brawl began in the first half. Some were in favor of fighting, while others were not. I played in defense, did not touch anyone. Me too. I saw that they were waving their fists on both sides. But who didn’t want to wave, he didn’t wave, "- Yuri Shlyapin then became the first president of the football Spartak, and in Melbourne the only USSR national team entered the symbolic national team." It was not water polo, but boxing on water. The Russians began to play very dirty when we took the lead. I myself received a terrible blow to the stomach. The most active were Markarov and Prokopov, who called us the entire match the Nazis, ”later Deje Gyarmati will become the most titled water polo player in the history of the Olympic Games.
By the fourth quarter, the Hungarians led 3-0. The fourth ball flew into the empty net of the USSR national team, which by that time was no longer playing, and having strayed into a circle in the center of the pool, was hiding from coins, bottles and lighters flying from the stands.
At the same time, Erwin Zador, who was holding on to his right eye, was swimming towards the side. Behind him in the water he left a wide red streak of blood. Photos of Zador with a deeply cut eyebrow and a red stream on his cheek will forever be a symbol of the match, which will go down in history called “Blood in the pool.” “For the last few minutes I have been patronizing Prokopov and managed to tell him that he is a loser and his family are losers Further. But then I made a terrible mistake. I could not take my eyes off Prokopov, but I looked at the referee who gave some kind of whistle. The next thing I saw was the body of Prokopov above the water and the fist of his free hand flying into my head. After his strike, I counted about 4 thousand stars, ”the doctors will not allow Zadora to go to a golden match against the Yugoslavs, and he will call this hour on the platform instead of the pool the hardest in life.“When Valentin Prokopov cut his eyebrow, he cried out so that even the red-hot stands were silent for a moment. But as soon as the victim swam to the side and smeared blood all over his face (unlike Mshveniyradze he didn’t even try to wash it off) and turned to the audience for sympathy, something hard to describe began, “a minute before the end of the match, Goikhman had to leave the gates empty.
Enraged spectators instantly broke down the barriers and surrounded the pool above which roared from anti-Soviet slogans, some were ready to throw themselves in the water to take revenge on the Russians. Only a detachment of Melbourne police and the announcer, who announced the early victory of the Hungarian national team, were able to cool them.

Baseball is considered the US national sport, but we have a terrible record in international competition.
Its interesting that association football is supposed to be "the world sport" but other countries - like the US - have team sports as their national sport that are only played by a handful of other countries at a professional level ergo Pakistan and field hockey, Portugal and roller hockey, Afghanistan and Buzkashi.
So, why did Hungary choose water polo? You have a lot of lakes and rivers?

It has actually happened in 1956, Melbourne olimpics game. Hungarian guys knew that while they are playing, their relatives are fighting for freedom against a million times bigger power, the USSR (soviet union). What the soviet army has done to Budapest, that was much more horrible than a second world war. A big part of the soviet army fought against 12-16 year-old kids, and young people from univercities. Hungary won the polo match.

I wish Hungary would have beaten the Russians in Budapest and lost the water polo game. By the way, the siege of Budapest during WWII was the third bloodiest siege of WWII and clearly was way more devastating than what they have done in 1956. In any case, the Russians were barbaric for a long time, were barbaric during WWII and after. No change.

And what only few people knows that, the Russians learned from the Hungarians....They had to teach the Russians, the Russians learned from the Hungarians....... Anyway, the Russians cheated at the game and look after the famous photo where the Hungarian players head is full of blood, because the Russian couldn't loose.... It was not only a game, it was a fu*king BIG HOPE for the Hungarians...If they can win the match, they can beat them at an "another way" too (you know it )..
Anyway the Hungarian poloteam torned after this game..., think about how many olimpic final could they had won?
And there are so many things....today too! Because he is a Hungarian, he .....and i am not talking about football;)
We are a small nation, but we can do big things!
If you look our history why was the chinese big wall built? How many times did we make impossible things..

yes and no. The video is obviously from a movie, however it is based off of the real events of the 1956 Hungarian revolution against the USSR, while this clip specifically is depicting the "blood in the water" olympic match between the USSR and Hungary. There's a failry large article about it on wikipedia if you google its name

Look around to see if there are any club water polo places in your area. Water Polo is so competitive in my area, that me and all of the first year players were put in in the last 1-2 minutes of the game. If you want to do seriously it, try and gain some experience and you'll have a great time in high school. Water polo is a great sport!

0:00-6:53 that part where Hungary kicked Russia's ass haha. Hungary kicked total ass and deserved to win. No offense to Russia but at the time they kind of deserved this. Today though total respect for both teams. Water Polo toughest sport in the world no doubt. Got to love this sport.

goof at 6:27 as the current canadian flag is shown, in 1956 Canada's flag was the Union Jack in the upper left corner, and the canadian coat of arms on the right side.
Nonetheless, the moviemakers did a fine job in recreating the events of that historical game, even if you're not a fan of water-polo!

leather balls were commonplace until the early seventies. At that time synthetic balls, especially made by VOIT offered some grip, lighter weight and importantly didn't get heavier through the match(!) Latterly balls made by Mikasa and Kiefer with much imporved grip again have become popular.

Something similar happened to me in primary school. We had free swim and I was swimming, I look up and a pool stick hits my right eye. I had to stay home for a week or two, being hit in the eye is not fun. Relax, I didn't have to get stitches, but I still have the scar.

have you ever tried to throw a leather ball that has been in the water for half an hour? It weighs about 1Kg. And getting a thing like that smashed in your face as a goalie hurts. Really. The guys in the movie play according to the 1956 Rules. All of the actors are major league players. They definitely know how to play. Besides: Mark Spitz is the Narrator in the movie as far as i know.

"I've watched over by Prokopovym at the last minute - told Enthusiasm. Told him that he was a loser and the family had the same, and so on... But there were no problems until I made a mistake: he lifted his eyes to see why the referee blew the whistle. I didn't need to keep your eyes on Prokopova. The next thing I saw, as he jumped out of the water and hit me in the head."
