Farmers markets are so important as a first step for backyard growers - and we couldn't have made our business work without it! Thanks for taking the initiative in your own community, and I look forward to the rest of the series

If you have the space, you should do a community garden. You can do 20-50 raised beds and lease the beds for the year. Around here we paid $50 for the year. We would have monthly works days where we would get together and do chores. It was nice to meet other local gardeners and learn some tips and tricks.

This may be a perfect solution for me. I am a high school teacher and I am thinking about retiring but will need some additional income. We have a small piece of land that is commercial next to our house that we own that doesn’t have a lot of parking but there is a bar restaurant across the street that has good parking space and we know the owners well. I think I’m going to ask him if he would be willing to let us borrow his parking lot. That may bring in revenue for him as well.

Myself and a group of other female vendors created Tri-Town Farmers Markets last year (we were worried there would be no winter markets during the pandemic)- we hosted a winter market and then 3 summer markets, all were so successful. The women I work with are amazing and so knowledgeable- we are now a non-profit and our second year winter market has more vendor applications! We have theme weeks and those have been very popular!!

My mom would do well in her town. She grows Asian vegetables and harvest wild edibles like mushrooms. I wish she would get certified as an organic grower and wild mushroom forager but her English isn’t very good. She also preserves hard to get Asian staples that I think would sell well because of an increase in Asian people and interest in cooking.

Years ago I didn’t know what a farmers market was, but saw lots of signs stating where and when they were happening. If I wanted locally grown food I would go to my local farm stands, luckily I live in an area with several. But now I see loads of people walking around one day a week farmer’s markets popping up everywhere. Makes me want to take a stroll through too!

It's a total dream to share what I grow at a farmer's market, unfortunately our local market only takes vendors from actual "farms" and not backyard growers. I just find it so sad because it's full of all the same stuff you get at the grocery stores (sure, maybe better quality and freshness, but come on, I can get orange carrots anywhere) and none of the weird, wonderful, and whimsical things I like to grow and experiment with in the garden.

Some of the farmers still open a small on in a parking lot.
