- The boss of NatWest, Dame Alison Rose, has resigned after admitting she gave information to the BBC about Nigel Farage's relationship with the bank, and had made a "serious error of judgement".

The former Ukip leader called her departure a "start" but said the bank's entire board should go too. While the government said financial institutions were there to serve customers fairly, not to tell them how or what to think.

The facts we know, she shared information she shouldn't have, that's bad and the reason she's gone (I wonder whether she'll come back like our home secretary did after being fired for the same reason, anyway I digress). Farage has NOT at any point denied that he doesn't meet the criteria for a Coutts account, infact when questioned about it, he said they have other customers who also don't meet the criteria , almost admitting he doesn't but also, how does he know there are other who don't meet the criteria? Has he seen their account statements?

The same way the vicar who was asked what he thought of the a bank, told them that he liked the services but not all the trans Pride flags and had his account closed. And he was just one of many, estimated at 10,000. When you are on one database, you'll soon be on them all. And if you think that's not heading towards Orwell's 1984, you might need to ponder it a bit more.
The sharing of information was very bad but the dossier him compiled by the Coutts was far more horrifying. It was released a week ago by a request made by him. Black marks for his role in politics, for associating with a tennis player, presumably because said international legend was against mandatory vaccination of a experimental shot and, lastly, for his personality. How do you pay the bills, travel or even have a drink (some bars don't accept cash). They may wrap it up as virtue, but it is totalitarian control and sounds very much like we are heading towards the Chinese Social Credit System.

I have had two nasty experiences with NatWest over the years one of which made me protest their charging me a penalty for handing over cash in £5 notes to credit my daughter’s account. This fee was a surprise - maybe I was naive but I thought they would welcome new deposits whether at the cash desk or by bank transfer - and I protested the fee only to receive a cursory response to the effect that the charge was to offset costs to the bank of/for payment to vestibule cleaning staff! That really took my breath away, never having heard that before nor ever since.

Interesting comments from Rachel Reeves. Firstly as shadow chancellor, I would have expected her to be following the case as it does impact her sphere of influence and her responsibility to hold the government to account as opposition party. Secondly, on her point of bullying towards Alison Rose, Alison appears to have broken GDPR and client confidentiality rules as well as having been at the helm of the bank steering the direction. Thus Alison’s position was untenable, especially after the BBC said it double checked prior to publishing, as it put Alison in a very difficult position in terms of GDPR, client confidentiality and lying about the root cause. Thus how could Alison remain in position?

Since when should banks be arbiters of morality. At worst, she deserved to lose her job for talking about individual customers to a BBC journalist at a dinner party.
Banks can pick and chose who to provide services to short of doing so for ethnical, gender/sexual preferences, religious, or racial reasons, they can refuse to serve you, me or racist tits like him without being required to give a reason. Personally NatWest kind of went up in my opinion since this, until they got rid of their board that was.
There should be a law that a bank cannot refuse basic services to a person.

But the only difference here is she didn't have leverage to protect herself against the fallout, unlike the other people in the same role who do this every single day. It's dirty at the top, and to survive you insulate and distance yourself from leaks, by using expendable proxies, not out right going to the BBC.

NatWest decided to close my business account. No reason. No explanation. Okay, fine, let’s close it and move on! Nope. Cora, the NatWest chat-bot, doesn’t recognise my e-signature. Now I can not withdraw my money from my account, I can not close it, their business banking line is helpless against Cora. Company tax return is due in three months, can’t be done without bank statements. If I breach the tax return deadline HMRC will hit me with late filing penalty, no if’s, no but’s.
NatWest was saved from bankruptcy with my taxpayers money in 2008 and is still 38% state owned.

Nothing stoped nigal from walking into any other bank and opening a regular business account. Coutts is a pompous , pretentious, high cost bank anyway, if he was a good business person he would look for a bank that didn't charge a huge fees for something banks do for free or minimal charge. Either way, if the bank didn't want to have his custom then good for them, it's their right to get rid of him.

btw Natwest froze my assets during a crucial peoriod in my life, about 8 years ago, for 3 whole years despite me campaigning to get access. I had broken no laws. They later compensated me (150 pounds only)

The dossier on Farage shows clearly he was targeted for legitimate, legal and democratic activity - the kind of activity essential for a functioning democracy. In any case, it can NEVER be the responsibility of banks to identify and punish criminals - it is a job for the police, the security services and the Courts of Justice. That is why I'm certain this was not a mere excess of "wokery", nor a "data breach scandal". It amounts to an attempted coup d'etat achieved by the weaponisation of banking. The resignations of Rose and Flavel has been arranged (with lucrative secret payoffs) to conceal the real conspiracy. This is TREASON.

@@lukeatbrandynightful Not me for to decide how Coutts runs their compliance with the litany of regulations that they have to work with. Either way, the core to their business is the client criteria, mortgage or investments of 1m or savings of 3m. It will be in the T&C that he signed upto, and would have been updated to him periodically, just as your bog standard Lloyds Bank account does every year or so when regulations change or services change. They will notify you if you no longer qualify for those services and are in breach of those criteria for services. All banks look at their clients periodically as part of the KYC to make sure that everything on accounts are correct. If a person is a PEP which NF would have been when he was a MEP there would be a lot of due diligence carried out, and an element of that is reputation and could that association impact the business brand and put the bank at risk of fine if that due diligence is not carried out. Commercially on paper he doesn't meet the criteria for Private Wealth Management for Coutts so on paper, yes they can propose closing the account as per the T&C with sufficient notice for the customer to take remediation, which Coutts have done. Coutts have not done anything that can materially harm him financially by requesting him to find a new home for his money other that a lower interest rate, it is only when they do something that materially harms him it becomes an issue. IMO
