My friend got a extremely rare kdk window air conditioner, the compressor sometimes jams that we need to smack the outdoor with a long broom stick because the unit is on the 2nd floor

Want to get a ac but only have enough for a thrift shop one.....they have a 12k and a 18k and was wondering how long does the freon charge normally last if you say buy a older one thats been used and if so do you have to go through charging it. Oh and are most older ones r22 and is the air much cooler then lets say i buy a new one.

I actually have a 80s GE Quietaire That I acquired at a thrift shop. Problem is, the compressor does not start, it just makes a humming sound for a few seconds and cuts off. Then tries again, cuts off tries again. Bad capacitor??

sounds like it could be a locked up compressor with a failsafe to keep it from overheating? I'm not an expert so take it with a grain of salt
