Good perspective, but let's remember the huge weapons deals brokered by the U.S. to so many developed nations already. Weapons trade is pretty common. Since most nations must import most of a certain staple or medicine, it's hard to think of a truly self-sufficient country. Trade is the lifeblood of global relations and sometimes it's the only tool to ensure any kind of peace, or even to try and gain it in a particular situation. Offering aid and trade gets the attention of any dictator, president, CEO, etc. It's easy to sell to the populations in need of schools, roads, clinics, electricity, and so on. Some call it selling out, but if you live in that poor place and then enjoy a better life because you finally have cell service, internet, or clean water, it is life-changing. Weapons and arms dealing is similar but even more crucial since it ensures defense and deterrence. Complicated but necessary.
