Honestly! I listen to this album almost every day and when we get to that Outro calling back to the begging I turn into a basketball with chills and tears of repressed memories lmao😂🔥
I think the album's happy tone reflects that theme about the fall of empires. The optimism that nothing will go wrong but behind the scenes it is slowly dying from the inside. Twenties is when that tone flips and the corruption starts to spread. Then we come to Darkness at the Heart of my Love, Griftwood, and finally Respite on the Spitalfields where the mask has unveiled. By now it's too late and the rot has consumed everything, killing it all, but still making room for something new and creating another cycle.
This isnt about the fall of an empire. It's about Jack the Ripper and two people who were murdered by a serial killer in London, and the fear he left behind as he was never caught. Women all over London were left terrified he might strike again. At least that's what Tobias says.
That is a fantastic way to sum it up. I've read a couple of reviews and especially the negative reviews are all like "The music sounds too happy at time for it to be Ghost." And I'm just over here thinking "are you even listening to the lyrics?" Tobias Forge is the master of creating a catchy melody with deeply troubling lyrics. I love it.
The reprise of Imperium at the end is such a nice touch, a new empire is born and it plays its anthem, only for it to die off as well inevitably, and the cycle goes in and on...
I love this track- an interesting detail- 'spital-fields' is derived from Hospital fields. It was a hospital on the edge of London built on a cemetery and charnel house - so already it gives this sense of the layering of the dead and the wounded - and then with the industrial revolution it became a dangerous slum, and of course this is where Jack the Ripper was active. There is a deep layering of trauma and the repeated consequences of empire that I think people often miss.
They're like an immense band. The songs feel so textured. I know that it seems weird but I am Christian and Ghost makes great music. It gives me a similar feeling to how worship music feels. Its like a spiritual, peaceful, feeling of togetherness. My dad and I are going to see them in Asheville, NC next week. I hope they end the show with this.
This song is my personal favorite. It's about Jack the Ripper. The Spitalfields is in the heart of a very dark place in London. Respite means to take a break and that why they were never able to find out who killed all those women. He just stopped but the song kicks ass. The album is like a story of going into the city and the journey of each song is perfect. This song you leave the city and you don't really want to but just play it again one more time. It rocks!
GREAT reactions to the album. I think Impera is brilliant. You said it was like a dream & that kind of nailed it. It's very surreal and cerebral. Now the long wait for the next album!
This is definitely my favorite song on the album, the way it ends with the starting lick is so clever! Tobias has talked a lot about how empires allways will rise, fall and rise again, so it's like the album is the empire that rose and fell but then the lick from the beginning comes back signifying another empire is starting to form
Everything is so meticulously calculated... the artwork, the songs, the uplifting melodies contrasting with the dark context of the lyrics... it's a beautiful trap.
Yea it's amazing how the ending of this song wraps the album around full circle. It's because like Tobias said, history is very circular, empires rise and fall, wars come and go and come again, viruses, etc...And just as history is circular so is the album. 🔥
When I heard this song. I thought “this is perfection”. Then I realized the last lyric was “nothing ever lasts forever, we will go softly into the night” and I’ve been worried that this is Tobias’s way of telling us that this is it. I’ve heard him comment about wanting to get into making movies. And he has the connections from the sound of it(I heard him talking about how a friend from the Halloween movie reached out to him about the music). I hope I’m wrong.
If he’s looking into making movies next then it’s not over! ✨🙌🏽💃🏽 All that means is even more creativity is on the way in a new form and we’ll get even more detailed and visual looks into this brilliant mind than we already have 🙏🏽
This album, and this song in particular, bring me to tears. It is so incredibly beautiful. You just said Ghost is your favorite band and same here. No words!
Thank you for reacting to the whole album. I really like it a lot and listen to it on a daily basis. I have to share a story with you: I am a singer myself, and one of the coolest moments was at a swedish music award some years ago. I was singing on stage with a band, and so was Ghost (they closed the show later). When our band performed our song, I looked down at the (seated), small VIP-section, and in the first front rows sat the nameless ghouls- in full oufit with the devil-masks and everything, all nodding their heads to our song. I almost forgot the lyrics, and it was on swedish TV 😂
Wow that must have been quite a sight to see from the stage! Do you have any footage of your performance? I'd love to see it. Thank you for sharing your story!
@@Paincakes Yes it was the most surreal experience. Our performance is not available unfortunately, but here is Ghost’s performance from that night: ua-cam.com/video/29p1zZn698U/v-deo.html
This album even turned my 72 year old mother on to ghost. The thing I like most about it is that you can spend a lot of time on it without getting bored. You can really take your time getting to know the songs
I totally got the same nostalgic feeling when I reached the last song, I didn't want it to end either...thinking it'll be years before listening to new Ghost...and I'm super excited to see where they go next. When they released Seven Inches of Satanic Panic I was so happy to get a little something something after Prequelle...hope this happens again 😁 The way he says "wasn't it" at minute 3:21 of the video I LOVE IT, chills...one of the things I appreciate about Tobias is how he sometimes pronounces the words with an evil voice or whispering or with more emphasis on one letter like "Grrrinding in a pile of moolah" Tobias did explain in an interview for Loudwire how he sees everything/life in cycles...I'm guessing that is why he finished the album circling back to the first track.. I intend to listen to it over and over anyways so...👌 I think every Ghost album has a particular atmosphere, every single one of them is an amazing listening experience and it only makes sense to listen to the albums from start to finish. I agree with you, they never get old, there's a lot going on and I find myself discovering new favorite songs every time I listen to an album. For this album I would rank the songs like this: 1. Respite on the Spitalfields 2. Watcher in the Sky/Darkness at the Heart of my Love 3.Twenties 4. Kaisarion 5. Call Me Little Sunshine 6. Spillways 7.Griftwood 8. Hunter's Moon But I love them all. It might change though. Sorry for the rant...but Ghost is my absolute favorite band ever...and this album is a masterpiece...it's the only music I've been listening to ever since the release🖤🖤🖤🖤 Love your reactions...you're very respectful of the songs. Keep them coming 🤘🤘🤘🤘
The spitalfields is an area in London somewhere. I think it's tourist-y. With the added theme of the fear and confusion, never catching or knowing if Jack The Ripper disappeared, or is just enjoying respite in the spitalfields. Your reaction vids are enhanced by the energy and emotion that are the most 'real' I've seen in these reacvids, no over drama. the knowledge of musical styles and nail in the head correlations to 70's - 90's rock and metal. I actually catch hints of ABBA or E.L.O. at times. And now the ones you've revealed.. Cheers and awesome fun watch brother!
80’s kid here but the riff in the breakdown has White Snake “Still of the night “ written all over it . Easily one of the best albums in the last decade in my option .Prog Rock Opera
Not only is this one of the strongest songs on Impera but in their entire catalog. What I absolutely love about this song is the guitar solo. The song is amazing and the solo just kinda grabs ya. Very much enjoying your channel.
In this song we go through so many emotions, it is so incredible! And the final guitar riff that also takes up the beginning of the album seems to move away ineluctably while we beg the song not to end... 😭💕💗💖💓
8:33 the comment about regular metal vs prog rock- This track (and so very much of the album) is 1987-1989 in one weird amalgam. It's Def Leppard, Iron Maiden's "Somewhere In Time", a bit of Dokken, and some Rush. There's also a lot of Master of Puppets, Yes, and Europe (and a weird Toto bit). This album is pure gold. I think it will eventually end up on the upper part of Rolling Stone's top 100 albums.
Love this song. As theme of this album is influenced by the fall of empires, this song feels like it's about the fall of the human empire. F@#$ing awesome song...
I lost track of how many times I've played Impera. It has to be more than 60 times for sure. i give it an 11/10. I love every song from start to finish, but this song is hands down the best one
I just watched through this whole playlist after having this album on repeat since it came out. It was really interesting to see a reaction from someone who thinks about music similarly to how I do, but who also was completely opposite in terms of which songs we loved immediately and which we took a few listens to fully warm up to. It made me think differently about the songs I wasn't as into, and I feel like I appreciate them more now. It's always cool to find different takes on art I love from people who clearly also love it.
Still too early for me to be able to judge with no bias, but this has some serious potential to be my favorite album yet. The only song I feel is out of place is Hunters Moon, but I can overlook that because it's a banger. The vibe is just perfect overall for me. For sure enjoyed seeing your reaction, hope to see more in the future!
This is another amazing song wrapping up the lp. I almost cried when it was over haha nooo I need more haha Ghost got me through some crummy days and still do. Seeing them live twice will be some of my best memories! Watching you enjoy them brings back those days when I was first discovering them. I have a nice little nameless Ghoul on my shoulder. Good reaction videos all of them. Just honest and real. You don't have to love them all to still love the band. Twenties is my least favorite on the album haha but it grew on me! Thanks for the fun! 💗✌🎵👻👻👻😈😈😈😈
Respite is a masterpiece as most part of Impera. Kaiserion, spillways, call me little sunshine, watcher in the sky, respite, all are masterpieces imho.
"The Devil doesn't have all the good music, Tobias Forge does!". From a review I read and it's so true. I am obsessed with Impera and Ghost in general.
Just a beautiful song all around, what i always loved about Ghost's musicianship is that the bass's and guitars are very prevalent over the other instruments, i don't know who Ghost's current guitarists and bassists currently are but such great work, Tobias has always chosen the best sound for Ghost.
Hell Yeees... fuckn awesome!🔥 I love this song! The album is amazing, I listened to it every day at work this week... a colleague loves Ghost now too!😄 Greetings from Germany... Rock on!🖤🤘🏻 (Your reaction Vids are realy great!)
no need to scale impera imao ghost broke down the scale i firmly believe that ghost topped up their game everything about this album is heavenly beautiful with a catchy majestic tone ~~ the riffs displays an astonishing amount of simplicity yet so addictive combined with the chorus which blew my f.... mind not to mention that the album lyrically is so abstract and deep if random people walks in they'll easily get mislead by it and that element of tragedy and mysticism really suits it oh my god i js can't find the right words to describe it ...
Matthieu! You present yourself with an interesting challenge. You must listen for the first time and react, knowing that when you speak you might be missing something, or step on a cool part. But of course we want to hear your comments. You can’t just sit there and listen the whole time. So I think you have found the perfect balance. You are a fantastic listener. And you listen DEEP! Your commentary is amusing and knowledgeable. You are positive and genuine. Keep up the great work!…and go with GHOST😌
This is my favorite track on the album. The break when it transforms to the intro guitars is just amazing and blew me away. Like you saif when the fade out starts: Don't let it end! About your conclusion on the other tracks i'm with you for twenties - it's also a facinating song. Spekaing of an reaction video i would like to more commenting while thr track is playing. There are so many points to apreciate 😀
Wow, it certainly gave a new dimension watching you react to this album...a masterpiece in my opinion. I have the pleasure to play with the "nameless ghoul with the stratocaster" from time to time when his not on tour, he's from my hometown.....
lol I was so waiting for your reaction when it ends as it begins!!!! 🖤🖤🖤 It was like a beautiful present wrapped in black ribbon!! This I find so epic!! Its all I listen to since it came out!! Great job Matthieu!! I love it all but Darkness..Spillways...Respite...Top 3 for me!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤
It's such a simple thing, but the sound all but cutting so the solo can start on Respite is one of those rare fist pumping "fuck yeah!" moments, I love it so much
This song was an amazing way to end the album. I was lucky enough to be right at the front in the Manchester gig (my first ritual!) which was the first after the album was released and I know the friends I was with as well were all hoping they'd end the show with this since they were starting with Imperium. I know if they had I'd have been bawling my eyes out way before the final "nothing ever lasts forever". Hopefully they do another round of touring with this album as there's so many songs I'd love to hear live! The only one I don't really care for is Twenties which seems to be pretty polarising.
Something not yet mentioned I feel is how great the bass fills and flourishes are to listen to in this song in particular. I hated the hetfeild “aAAHhhhhhh “at first now I love them. Really looking forward to getting this album. I love that the ending leaves us wanting more.
I really appreciate your videos! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Ghost is my all time favorite. It is nice to get together with Ghost fans. They are rare in Wisconsin. Edit: is there anyone else that loves Watcher In The Sky more?! Or am I the only one?? I can’t get enough of the entire album! 😎
It would have been truely great if that ending progressed into a nice long gilmourish solo - wouldve been so epic. Hey! Matthieu, ive been following you premieres through the album.. thank you for that! good reviews. Heres my ranking , 1-10 Imperium - 9 Kaisarion - 9 Spillways - 8 Hunters Moon - 7 Call me little sunshine - 8 Watcher in the sky - 9 Dominion - 7 Twenties - 7 Darkness at the heart of my love - 9 Griftwood - 9 Bite of passage - 7 Respite on the Spitalfields - 10
Yes I could have used another 5 minutes before the fade out lol. Thank you for following the premieres with me, it was so much fun having you join me 🖤
This is one of Ghost’s best songs ever, without a doubt 🤙🏽
Can't disagree. It's amazing.
The first two minutes are perfection
Yes it's a great song, but I think it's still just a very close second to "Cirice"
Don’t know bout that , there’s a few classics that would shadow this easily, but it’s a good song
No doubt about it
"I don't want it to end, noo.."
Tobias: "Nothing ever lasts forever.."
Tobias: "Gottem"
What a way to end an album. It’s one of those songs that “takes you to a place”. Didn’t want the album to end.
Seriously, when it dawned on me the song was fading out, I was like NOOOOOOOO!! lol
Literally how I feel about this song man this song just idk man takes me on a trip everytime it feels so calming 🙌🏽
Honestly! I listen to this album almost every day and when we get to that Outro calling back to the begging I turn into a basketball with chills and tears of repressed memories lmao😂🔥
I really love how respite on the Spitalfields transforms to imperium at the end, and that if you play the album on repeat it goes a perfect loop
Kinda like fall of an empire and rebuilding a new one
Also it says I'll be the shadow, you'll be the light. Maybe the light is the new leader
Tobias mentioned something about circular things, and it is a touch of a genius to make the ending sound like the intro. Hence restarting the cycle.
@@slzgd that's a great catch! I listened to that interview but didn't thought of that.

Hell Yeees... fuckn awesome!🔥
I love this song!
The album is amazing, I listened to it every day at work this week... a colleague loves Ghost now too!😄
Greetings from Germany... Rock on!🖤🤘🏻
(Your reaction Vids are realy great!)
Thank you for the kind words Inka!
@@Paincakes You're Welcome...💜🤘🏻
It is like a dream.i can't stop listening to it
EPIC SONG, EPIC ALBUM.
Agreed.
no need to scale impera imao ghost broke down the scale
i firmly believe that ghost topped up their game
everything about this album is heavenly beautiful with a catchy majestic tone ~~ the riffs displays an astonishing amount of simplicity yet so addictive combined with the chorus which blew my f.... mind
not to mention that the album lyrically is so abstract and deep if random people walks in they'll easily get mislead by it and that element of tragedy and mysticism really suits it
oh my god i js can't find the right words to describe it ...
I don’t understand why they haven’t performed this and Darkness live! What I’d do to see those songs performed 😭
Tx for the complete react of this beautiful album 🤟👻
you just reacted the same way i did to the whole thing lol i CAN'T stop listening to this album, it's so good
The chorus on Darkness is probably one of the best thing i've listes in my life. It's the Beatles.
Every reaction video I've watched to this song has the same reaction to the bridge as you did at 3:06. :)
Spillways, watcher in the sky, twenties and the last song respite of the spitalfield are my favorites .
5:23 that chord/key change is epic and makes that entire song. I love the change of tempos and drumming styles in the song as well!
En conclusion, es la mejor cancion del album siendo el cierre perfecto.
loved your review man, this song is a masterpiece for me!
Guitar Solo is an amazing in Respite on The spitalfields! I like that very much
Wow, it certainly gave a new dimension watching you react to this album...a masterpiece in my opinion.
Same. Exact same
Top 3. Fourth would be Watcher.
@@tims6141 I like Griftwood also hard to pick favourites with this one!! lol
Thank you for following along with me!
@@Paincakes ….wondering if you are on pins and needles for the new King Diamond album(s). Hmmm?
@@Paincakes enjoyed every minute!!! thank you!
the end made me so emotional
Same
Great band with incredible production values. Well engineered.Fuck ya.
Andy Wallace!
Great reaction. I like to hear my feelings expressed (which I could never do)!
Ghost the only metal band that can me whistle to their songs!
I Agree with you, and cool reactions…Ghost rules, my guitarfriend once introduced ”ritual” for me…after that am I stucked with them 🤟😎
This song makes me feel some sort of nostalgic emotions. I love it
Let's hope we don't have to wait to long for ghosts next album 🤘
I wake up in the middle of the night with this album playing in my head.
Masterpiece this song (and album) , hopefully Ghost makes a music video for it, now that would be epic.
It's such a simple thing, but the sound all but cutting so the solo can start on Respite is one of those rare fist pumping "fuck yeah!" moments, I love it so much
I love this song but then again I love the whole album haha. Great reviewing thanks
Thank you!
That baaaaaassss. Want more of yor Baaaaaassss
There will probably be more Ghost soon, maybe in a year or so, they always release an EP after full albums.
One of the best songs I've ever heard. Period.
Best reactions i seen in a long time! Awsome dude! You react to it the same way i feel about it, I follow you from now on 😊
Thanks for the kind words and I appreciate the follow. Cheers!
Great stuff! Enjoyed listening to the album with you.
Thanks Aaron
This album is perfect.
Something not yet mentioned I feel is how great the bass fills and flourishes are to listen to in this song in particular. I hated the hetfeild “aAAHhhhhhh “at first now I love them. Really looking forward to getting this album. I love that the ending leaves us wanting more.
Yes those bass accents really add a lot of depth.
Love the homage to Still Of The Night
Intro's chords remind me of Alice Cooper's , Poison! And after solo , the break reminds me that break from Whitesnake's Still of the night !!!
My favorite songs from the new Ghost album is Call me little Sunshine and Twenties
A true work of art
I really appreciate your videos! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Ghost is my all time favorite. It is nice to get together with Ghost fans. They are rare in Wisconsin.
Edit: is there anyone else that loves Watcher In The Sky more?! Or am I the only one?? I can’t get enough of the entire album! 😎
I am glad you appreciate my videos, thank you!

@@Paincakes 😍😍
TF also talked in a recent interview about how everything goes in a cycle and thats why its perfect how the album goes full cycle. (TF=Tobias Forge)
It would have been truely great if that ending progressed into a nice long gilmourish solo - wouldve been so epic.
