  • Windows Games on Linux | WINE Versions
Applications, Gaming, and all the different ways Linux deals with Windows Programs. Almost every Windows program uses WINE albeit in through a different program like Steam Proton, CrossOver, PlayOnLinux, and Lutris. So, lets go over how to use it and all the different versions of it out there
winehq-staging: this is the most recent testing wine version.
winehq-stable: this is the current stable wine version (probably the one you should install)
winehq-devel: this package is used to provide development headers, mostly used by third party software compilation.
Links to 3rd Party WINE builds:

World would be a better place if all apps and games developers were building and testing their products on Wine instead of Windows. That could maximize the potential market. Let's get started.

Great video! One thing I'd like to learn more is this "Proton wine builds (-tkg, -GE, official or others) are not suited for use outside of Steam, even if the option is provided by some third party tools. Doing so can break the whole way they are designed to work and thus is NOT recommended." I've used proton in Lutris and it seems to be working fine but according to TKG I shouldn't. Maybe make a video explaining why we shouldn't use Proton in Lutris?

I use Play on Linux, because I can never get Lutris to work right and Cross Over grabs all the resources to itself, and failed to get the program at the time running. Play on Linux has worked for everything so far, but you have given me two more to look at, thanks.

Will never happen in the short, or medium term. Even Apple with significantly more market share than linux desktop is missing many games. Until Linux's market share significantly increases, you will be stuck with having to do work arounds with Wine or lutris or proton or whatever; and then there will always be efforts from some manufacturers to incorporate DRM that can't be easily bypassed with WINE or other similar programs. What I want from linux is not WINE; I want native support. That's the holy grail.

Hi Chris, thanks as always for making these very informative videos and a Windows user who has made the transition to Linux (I use Zorin 15 Core as my daily driver) you really encourage me to continuing to learn more about Linux and I spread the greatness of Linux to my friends and family. A member of my family is actually sick of Windows 10 and wants to change but won't until Facebook Games Room can run on it. I have followed a tutorial on the internet to do this however it doesn't work. Is there anyway you or anyone in the comments section can assist me? I would greatly appreciate it. Keep going, thanks for your channel, your content is marvellous!

So Chris, THANK YOU for your content. I WAS a Mint guy, just a new Linux user- your videos have shown me the vastness that is Linux... I recently switched to KDE Neon and... WOW. I HOPE that my newfound love of the customization doesn’t take me down the Arch road, or other distros that you can customize TOTALLY, but need a ton more knowledge.
My question today: can YOU pls do video(s) on KDE Neon? For the intermediate user, like a lot of your followers, offers MUCH. it’s not a newbie stock flavor... and you can customize in SOME ways of the barebones distros that hardcore users like. Please cover neon. Or, plasma/KDE in general. I vote KDE Neon tho. Can that be put into the mix?

Wow I never new they were other custom version of wine and proton I usually would just use the staging version if something didn't work and I absolutely love Lutris cause of how easy it is to use and how much stuff they have on there that isn't just for games for example I use Fusion 360 for 3D modeling since it's simple and easy to use but I could never get to work on Linux then I found out about Lutris and saw that they had a installer script for Fusion what to me months to try and get working but ultimately failing Lutris got up and running for me in a matter of minutes I just love how the Linux community is constantly getting better and more frequently now if only I can get Davinci resolve working on my laptop with Pop_OS and find a way to not get banned from games that use easy anti cheat it will be more difficult to keep my Windows partition and PC

For DOS games I've been using regular DOSBox and DOSBox-X. Both work fine, but the second one is more comfortable to use with menus on the top like a typical emulator. The most 'advanced' games I was running were those classic FPS games like Doom, Hexen, Shadow Warrior etc. When it comes to emulation of retro stuff Linux has the best software that works without any problems.

I keep Linux on a dedicated SSD but still find myself creeping back to Windoze 10. I'm well versed in Linux, but still not really feeling it unless I'm programming, other than that, meh.

      Yeah, that's the thing.
If your dual booting you will never really get into the "other" system.
When I started with Linux I found myself constantly booting into Windows.
But my goal was to learn Linux, because I was tired of all the lockdown in Windows.
And after about a month I really enjoyed using Linux.
Now when I'm sometimes forced to do something in Windows ( at work ), I don't see why I had such a hard time switching over.

@@Zandman26 You are absolutely right! The lockdown is what's killing me on Windows. I can't seem to make up my mind what distro to actually stick with. I feel like I've tried almost every Linux distro there is, however, Mint and Ubuntu are the two I use the most. I know......Ubuntu........lol. I'll admit it, I boot into Linux mostly for Citra since OpenGL drivers for AMD work better on the platform. I have got to have me some Zelda: A Link Between Worlds after a long 12 hour shift. ;) ;)
