More obscure Capitals on my new favorite map: Capital Cities #3 [PLAY ALONG]

- The fun continues with more capital cities. Is this the week I finally get a perfect score on this map? A tricky first round had other ideas, but would it get the better of me?

British man looks at a map of Africa and asks: "Where do we draw the line". Classic.
Lmao 🤣 🤣 🤣
LMFAOOOO this made my day
Lmao. Good one.Made my American ass chuckle
Lol no one looks at the map as British do
I don’t get it
my guy searched the entire west of africa for one gas station
The dedication of this man is astonishing
At least he found it. I did that and was still 2000 km away lol
I managed to find it too, through detective work and some systematic searching. Country had to be French+Arabic and near the Equator. Looking through the capitals Tchad was the only one that had gas stations with a similar naming scheme: Station Service . At first I couldn't find the specific station, but after checking other possible capitals (and seeing they didn't name their gas stations that way) I went back and located it.
I'm not used to playing global GeoGuessr, so the street view ones were hard for me. I was amazed I managed to nail the Eswantini one, but I gave up on the Uganda one (I guessed SE Asia or Caribbean, but couldn't find anything suitable).
I can not believe he found it... I searched some streets in Niamey which looks just similar on the map and just lost patience because it wasn't even certain if this bloody service station was marked...
its called sahel region
That first guess is a work of art. I'm in awe at how you just managed to find a random petrol station in Africa through sheer determination. This is why I'm subbed, vintage Tom
that was amazing indeed

"Popped his clogs" is for sure entering my verbal repertoire.
Popped his clogs : raped anally to death with a metal bar by an angry mob.
Lol he said that so casually too. I've never heard the phrase before either
We came, we saw, he died
Underrated comment
How have people never heard of this phrase?
the word "محطة" means station, it is read from right to left and sounds like "mahata" if you were curious
محطة خدمات
It means "service station", read as "mahata khedmat", from "kheddam" the verb for "to enter into service for" or "to serve", also has the meaning of "to work" in many local arabic dialect. The word "khedmat" is in the plural, so literally "services station". TMYK

Also, in the Libya round, the English text on the map was different (Tripoli City Hall or something, instead of Municipality of Tripoli Center) but the Arabic under it on the map was the same as on the building (بدلية طرابلس المركز)
This is a fun mix of "sorta easy to find the right city" and "Tom does detective work to find this intersection"
"Western Sahara. Is that even a country?". My good sir, you've just opened up a large can of worms
is it?
@@GeneralTotoss yes but no
@@GeneralTotoss There's a de-facto independent polity there but they control a strip of sand in the interior. They also have their capital inside of nearby Algeria. The majority is under control of Morocco and it's treated as an integral part of the country, i.e. you can take a bus down there and you won't know you're in disputed territory.
When you pass that dashed line, all you'll notice is an old abandoned service station in the hamlet of Tah that used to serve as the border control station back before 1975, when the Sahara was a part of spain and there was a real international border at that line.
@@GTAIVisbest: That's actually kind of cool...

23,255 points! Haven't watched the video yet to see if I beat Tom but I'm pretty proud of my score!
Round 1: Was stuck between it being Chad or Mauritania based on the French and Arabic sign, combined with the desert vibe. Thought it might be Mali or Burkina Faso too but they don't have any names in Arabic on Google Maps, so ruled them both out. Guessed randomly in Chad and was only a mile or so out. Pretty chuffed about that - if I'd gone for Mauritania I'd have been toast.
Round 2: Sun in the north, driving on the left, clearly Africa. Pretty hilly - guessed Eswatini on a hunch and was very lucky! The good thing is that if you can get the country it's pretty easy to get a good score as you know you're in the capital!
Round 3: Riga - easy to find on the map by using the bridge, thanks to the sightseeing bus!
Round 4: Tripoli - but couldn't find where exactly so just went relatively central and got within a mile or so. Glad for the sign that said Tripoli because I didn't recognise that Libyan flag (in my head their flag is still the old solid block of green)
Round 5: The only round I didn't get properly...figured roughly where in Africa it was but not close enough - guessed Kenya, but it was Uganda - ended up getting about 3,600 on this round. Still not too bad at all!
Loads of fun Tom, love this format and love playing along with you! Only started playing GeoGuessr thanks to you - hope you get commission from them! Now to watch your video to see how you did this time :-)

Same for me but screwed up the last one worse than you did... 22k score. Still quite proud.
I am not a native speaker of english so I though "station service" has to be english, that is why I went from Chad to Sudan on that one. An the last I had the right city, but I couldn't find the exact location, because the north bypass road looks like a road with seperate lanes on the map, so I excluded it beeing on that road from the beginning.

you're almost right about how Liberia was founded, it was actually founded by a group of white Americans who formed the "American colonization society" because they thought there was a problem with a growing number of free black men who roamed America, and they believed that they should be "returned to there original land" problem was most of these free people where third or fourth generation (or even seventh in some cases) children from the original slaves who lost there identity to their original land due to slavery, plus a lot of the people who travelled back weren't even from the place that became Liberia... which caused a bunch of bloody fights with the original locals who lived in Liberia and an unstable government which still has the same problems from the day it formed..

One of the best proper Geoguessr videos for a while. Excellent detective work, very relaxing video!
I'm glad I got a perfect score in eSwatini within a minute, there was nothing there to outright say it was such as a flag or country/city name, just shows playing the game for a short while really builds up your knowledge quite quickly
I missed one point because I clicked too quickly in the second round... I'm devastated. I actually knew Chad based on the country code on the phone number, because I was once randomly called from a Chad phone number.
I really do love this format btw. It has exactly the right amount of detective work while still being possible most of the time without insane knowledge.
I love that you took so long to get the first one, but then pretty quickly went on to get a perfect score, must have been very satisfying.
I'm so baffled by that first round. No way I would've thought about that country.
Chad speaks French and the inhabitants were black... I'm surprised it took him that long.

I'm satisfied in getting all the cities right (24,907 points) but the big difference is that after searching for 1 minute for the exact spot I give up and then I just choose a road with the same compass direction. It definitely takes me way longer than Tom in reading the map and translate that to what I'm seeing on the screen. Great job GeoWizard!

I got the first one pretty easily by looking at the capitals of the arabic speaking countries in Africa that also spoke French. As soon as I got over Chad, Service Station Sabarna was one of the dozen or so places that Google labeled -- probably because of all you guys searching for it! I failed at the last one, however, so no perfect score.

You already got Algeria in a previous map Tom, interesting photospheres in obscure countries. It was Oran and you were impressed by how developed it is. It's not as poor, you won't find dirt roads in the capital city. Great guess though, well done.
Insane how he recognised Riga quicker than I did even tho I am from that city and know exactly the place
I mean he read the name on a bus😂
This was such a fun round to play along with.
I was really proud to get the correct city/country in the first one but figured since I was just guessing that I shouldn't look too hard for an exact match since I wasn't even sure I was in the right city. Turns out I was, and with a little more searching I could've gotten perfect maybe.
The second round wasn't too hard, but I surprised myself with how quickly I was able to get the perfect spot. I found the spot within a minute but then second guessed myself for a few minutes. Perfect score achieved.
The third and fourth rounds weren't that hard. Got perfect on both pretty fast.
The last round was hard. I honestly had no clue where I was. My guess turned out to be not horrible, considering it really was just a guess. I ended up guessing the adjacent country's capital city.

Good game Tom, congrats! Quite a few difficult rounds. Challenging and fun!
I got 22511 points total.
Round 1 - 5000 points, 76 meters
Took a while, but saw the french and arabic combo, plus it looked like the Sahel region. Looked around in a few cities until I saw that N'djamena looked promising. Eventually found the service station.
Round 2 - 4986 points, 3,2 km
Definitely southern Africa. Looked at Lesotho for a while, but eventually decided on Eswatini. Didn't look hard enough at the roads, so I clicked further south on a similar-ish looking road.
Round 3 - 5000 points, 7 meters
Saw Riga on the bus, plus it looked like a main square with a large bridge. Definitely the easiest round.
Round 4 - 5000 points, 21 meters
Easy to see it was Tripoli, but took a while to find the exact spot as the name of the building didn't correlate to what it said on the map. Plus the buildings looked different. Compared the arabic writing on the building to the map, and felt confident.
Round 5 - 2525 points, 805 km
Pretty sure it had to be east Africa, as it was quite tropical, but I didn't find the correct country. Went with Dodoma in Tanzania, though I was considering going for Burundi or Rwanda but for some reason didn't even think Uganda for a second.
Your videos are the best for me. I like almost all your videos.
Wow I thought I did great finding N'djamena, but hey you're the geowizard
It's not the first time that Tom have seen more than one flag at the same time, to then only acknowledge the flag he immediately recognize. A capital city is especially likely to have different flags next to each other, with embassies and the likes about.
Got a perfect score as well!
Round 1: 5000 points! I have to say I’m really impressed with myself on this one. I got it pretty fast too, like 6 minutes! My thinking was, ok this has to be Affica. I then spotted the gas station with “Station Service Sabarna” written and, more importantly, the Arabic script under it. So we know that we’re in a French speaking African country which also has Arabic script. A couple options are shown on map. Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, etc... I first look into Mauritania for a couple seconds but it doesn’t feel right. Then I go into Chad. It already looks more promising and I get excited when I see gas stations visible with similar names. Like Salama and Hanana. Then all of a sudden I see Sabarna! Get in! Couldn’t believe it. Everything added up so I clicked and got the full points. Got pretty lucky I have to say, but it’s so satisfying.
Round 2: 5000 pts. Yup same thinking as you.
Round 3: 5000 pts. Name of city on bus made this a very quick round.
Round 4: 5000 pts. Took me a little more to find where we were, since some buildings didn’t show up on map. But I then noticed the roundabout and then it was easy to find.
Round 5: 5000 pts. The toughest round for me. I knew it was Kampala quickly. But I felt like none of the roads were adding up. I checked the place it ended up being multiple times but some stuff weren’t right. After a lot of looking around, I decided that it couldn’t be anywhere else and just went for it. Glad it was correct.
On top of the building with the flags, I believe the left flag resembles the Chad flag so I was able to get this one but that was a good save Tom!
Ahh rounds 3&4 were down my memory lane , born in Latvia and lived in Libya for a year 😊
That first one was amazing!
5:33. Lol that's exactly what I did. I checked for fuelstation names in every Arabic-African County and was tired so I finally picked Chad where I had my marker because the station I looked at there had the most alike name. Unfortunately I didn't check for other stations in that city to find the right one. If I would've done that I would have got perfect score. I'm still very happy about just being a little of on the first and nailing the others. I really didn't think I would get the last one tho.
always proper excitement when the Tomster uploads
Somehow missed out on the perfect score on the Tripoli one of all. Basically got sick of looking around and while I realised it was a roundabout, it never clicked for some reason so just chucked down the marker in the old town and lost 3 marks. The Chad one I got by looking different African countries to see if they used French and Arabic but knew it wouldn't be one of the northern ones, decided Chad looked the most promising and although I didn't quite make out the name of the service station (was harder to see on my game for some reason), I managed to find it. Last one genuinely took a few hours as I didn't know it was Uganda automatically like you did so was searching all the African countries that drive on the right and then still took about an hour to actually find the spot thanks to confusing myself with the directions.
16:28 lmao I'm from the other side of europe but visited riga once. Immidiately recognised the spot. I once drunkenly pissed into the river under that bridge!!

Given that you have done 2 rounds of 5 locations, there is actually a 23% chance that you would get a repeat round this video, which is a larger chance than I would've suspected
1-(188/198)^5=0.228
Yeah, it's like the birthday paradox.
Why is it only 1 location per capital in this map, is it some weird limitation of Geowizard custom maps that I'm not aware of? I mean a lot of capitals have streetview, and if not, there should be tons of photospheres available. A map with 100 or 1000 locations per capital would be far superior for replayability, not only that but also chance of repeat rounds would be minuscule.
@@Glotttis I think this is to make it easier to have a random capital. If you included 5000 locations in - let's say - London, and only one for small nations such as Palau and Nauru, you would hardly ever make to have a hard guess.
BTW you could create a far superior map yourself, I'm pretty sure Tom would love to play that :)
that Eswatini guess was wild, well done my man
That first one is unreal fair play mate x
boTswana, leSotho, and eSwatini were states of the Tswana, Sotho, and Swati nations which were protectorates of the British Empire in the period of competition between the Cape Colony and the Boer states (Orange Free State and Transvaal). The idea was to prevent the Boers from taking over the territory.
eSwatini was part of an effort to cut the Boers off from possible ports, which also included British support for a new Portuguese city in the area, Lourenço Marques. The Portuguese moved the capital of Mozambique there and it became known as Maputo after independence.
The final part of the surrounding of the Boers was the establishment of a new British colony to their north, Rhodesia.
Another great round, Maestro!
Libya changed the all-green flag to the present one exactly 10 years ago, in 2011 ;)
Remember that most of the time photospheres don’t have the correct compass… you got lucky that first one had the correct orientation, sounds like you where heavily using it.
Tom, you've done it again mate. 👏🏾
You beat me on Eswatini, but I managed to find the rest. The Chad pic I found just zooming in to look for French sounding street names, and there was the target!
