  • Learn how to express giving and receiving in Japanese with this short video!
    Learn Japanese more efficiently at www.kanji-link.com !
    Notes:
    - you can take out "WATASHI WA" and "WATASHI NI" to sound more natural.
    - although it is grammatically correct, it is not natural to say that someone "receives from me" (私 に もらう, watashi ni morau). So try to use "I give" to someone (あげる, ageru) instead!
    List of the vocabulary used in this video:
    花 【はな, hana】= flower
    本 【ほん, hon】= book
    姉 【あね, ane】= my older sister

    This is the clearest explanation of giving/receiving that I've heard so far ^^ Thanks! I had no idea "social distance" was so wrapped up into the grammar.

      How to say "Mr. Abe gave flowers to YOU" or "Did You give Mr. Abe flowers"? This Video didn't explain!

    • @nihongomainichi7010

      I think japanese culture doesn't talk about speaking in 3rd person perspective that's why these rules are not given here

    • @Rhovanion85
      @Rhovanion85 6 місяців тому

      @@chouken84 When you say "Mr Abe gave flowers to you", you are feeling relative to that person so you'd say あべさんははなをくれました and from context they will know くれる does not mean you but them but in the same group (うち) If you talk to s stranger and want to say "mr abe gave flowers to you" You will always say "You received flowers from Mr Abe" because otherwise it would be too direct. You COULD theoretically say あなたにあべさんははなをあげました, but it is very very very rude and I strongly recommend avoiding it. That is perhaps why the video does not explain it.
      Maybe another way would be to use the passive form: あべさんにはなをあげられました but that kind of sounds as if you are annoyed by it because you "received" the action of him giving it "upon you".
      "Did you give Mr Abe flowers" -> あべさんにはなをあげましたか?
