    Excellent introductory video. I've been a ham for about 40 years. I had gotten away from the hobby when we were raising our kids. Now with renewed interest, I see that there are so many new aspects of ham radio that I didn't know existed. D-Star is one of them. This gives me something new to explore. Regards KA2AHE.

    Thanks for sharing ! I look forward to seeing the data capabilities. Ive been using P25 for years and the data side of it leaves much to be desired IMHO. I have grown quite fond of TRBO/DMR over the last 2 years but haven't experimented with its data capabilities yet.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      +SurvivalComms It's impressive. The plug and play simplicity has real prepper applications. If something is easy to use folks will use it.

    • @rowdyraider556
      @rowdyraider556 8 років тому

      +SurvivalComms TRBO/DMR data is just beginning to come into play. Tetra for data really took off in Europe but never really took off in the US as expected. DMR data is mainlyjust GPS and text simultaneously on the other time slot (or on the same one as voice) but there are supposed to be some "new" unavailings of modems and radios this year at IWCE.
      I've never messed around with P25 data. I've come from a P25 VHF and DMR UHF populated area where more hams own DMR equipment than DStar so DStar never really got used a lot.

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms 8 років тому

      rowdyraider556
      Tetra is awesome - I think the industry here kept it away. It should be no trouble to push data over a dedicated timeslot at decent speeds and if there was a demand for it the manufacturers would make it. Cellular data and devices are cheap compared to self maintained DMR radios and infrastructure.
      There are a handful of DStar repeaters here but I never made the jump either. Surplus radios are so cheap and prevalent. We have the same set up here P25 VHF DMR UHF but the P25 has really taken a back seat to the DMR.

  • @rpgiuliani

    nice video collection. Many CT repeaters were switched to DMR based solely on the promise of low cost and or free used repeaters, originally paid for by the taxpayer. until up to 2 years ago, there were perhaps a half dozen DMR repeaters. in addition, misinformation on DStar by the DMR folks at that time skewed things. Throw in the cheap sole band DMR hts and hams that refuse to do real research and you have the perfect storm.

    Is there a reason why almost all handheld ham radios are in short/compact profile while almost all public safety handheld radios are long and larger in size? The longer radios can accommodate larger battery packs, so why isn't that desired in ham radio market?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      +dcentral I can't speak for the whole Amateur radio market but I prefer a radio that is pocket size and I believe that plays a role in product design. Public safety radios almost require a duty belt for transportation. I do agree that batter size (i.e. large enough to last a 12 hour shift) is a significant factor in the public safety markets.

  • @waynefloyd2403
    @waynefloyd2403 8 років тому

    First off thank you for what you do. I have been prepping for about 10 years but new to HAM radio (just got my General License) and your videos have helped me get a leg up on understanding what can be done with this technology. As for as D-STAR will you be going over the pros and cons of choosing this system from a prepping perspective? A lot of the older Elmers in my area tell me to stay away from D-STAR because all the extra features only work with other D-STAR radios. Is that correct?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому +1

      +M. P. Path D-STAR is not an Icom proprietary standard. D-STAR is an open-standard developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL). As an open standard, any equipment manufacturer can offer equipment with the D-STAR standard. However, at this time only Icom is marketing equipment with the D-STAR standard. I respectfully disagree with your Elmers that you should avoid digital Amateur radio pending some industry adoption of a single digital Amateur standard. Amateur radio is advanced through use and experimentation - the only way that's going to happen is to have this equipment in the field. All this said, from the prepping/emergency preparedness perspective these radios have features unmatched by any other product - features I will be covering in the playlist series.

    Very cool device. I was going to ask if this was something that you would recommend over one of the Baofeng or Wixchaun handheld radios. I answered my own question when I saw that the price was 10+ times the cost of one of the hand held ham radios on Amazon. I know it does way more than the cheaper radios, but the cost is just too high, for me anyway.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      +DocLarsen44 Doc - I do not recommend any of those cheap import radios - I think they are junk. I see preppers spend thousands of dollars on other aspects of prepping (i.e. weapon accessories) which are less likely to be needed, while going as cheap as they can when it comes to comms. Perhaps it's because I'm a bit biased towards comms. I think (hope) that as the playlist progresses you will see the value in all the feature sets this radio offers. Respectfully - Hank

    Thanks for the great video. D-STAR looks really cool, but my issue with it is you are tied to a single manufacturer, ICOM. And it's expensive. The version of D-STAR ICOM uses is proprietary and copyrighted (or is it patented?). To me those are the biggest drawbacks. Thanks again, and looking forward to the series.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      +jmtnvalley D-STAR is not proprietary, it's open source and was developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL). However, so far only Icom has adopted the standard. To run digital and get this kind of capability yYou have to start somewhere and the features in this radio make it a great place to start. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. commsprepper

    • @jmtnvalley
      @jmtnvalley 8 років тому

      Commsprepper
      OK, D-STAR is not proprietary, but like other commercial digital modes (P25, TETRA, DMR, DPMR, NXDN, System Fusion), D-STAR uses a closed-source proprietary voice codec (AMBE) that's patented by Digital Voice Systems, Inc. because it was the highest quality and only codec available in silicon when the system was released. Unfortunately, amateur radio operators do not have access to the specification of this codec or the rights to implement it on their own without buying a licensed product. Other companies have not bothered to implement D-STAR because of this.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      +jmtnvalley Perhaps one day all these standards with software defined, making all of them available in all radio brands. I'm drawn towards the Icom line because of its features and applicability with emergency preparedness and prepping. For me ease of operations and dependability are crucial for field communications and this radio meets those needs.

    • @jmtnvalley
      @jmtnvalley 8 років тому

      Commsprepper
      ICOM gear is good stuff, but it is some of the more expensive gear available, especially the gear that is D-STAR capable. I, myself, covet the IC-7100. However, currently, D-STAR is a one vendor capability. That limits its versatility. Until AMBE is replaced by an open source codec, I don't see D-STAR getting enough traction.
      Still look forward to your other vids on this, though.

    I have recently purchased an ID 50 A plus and despite reading and following the directions more times than I can count have not been able to get the to connect to a local repeater to make a digital connections. Can you make a video detailing the steps on how to do it.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      Some questions first. 1 have updated the repeater list on the SD (you have to buy the SD card). 2 have you registered online with DSTAR? 3. Can you hear other stations? 4 how far are you from the repeater? Are you using an external antenna?

    • @christopherowens114
      @christopherowens114 8 років тому

      1. No I have not updated the list. The particular repeater I am trying access is not on the list. I have to program the repeater individually by hand using the software that came with unit when I purchased it.
      2. Yes I am registered with Dstar.
      3. Yes I can hear other stations.
      4. I am about 9 miles from the repeater. I am not using an external antenna. I did go the tallest building in the city I live in to try to make the conntection.
      according to the manual if I make a connection I should an indication on the screen of UR? which I have not been able make.

    So, I finally got my ID-51A+ ! for the last week, I could not hit a repeater, even with offset and PL tone set properly. Also just talking simplex, all receptions would get interrupted every 5 seconds. Argggg!!! I longed for my trusty Baofeng. After talking with tech support, apparently you have to tell the radio to use the PL tone ! So then I went into the quick menu DUP and turned on TONE. Also the NOAA Weather Alert was on, and that was causing the 5 sec interruptions. Uggg All ok now !
    I want to import all my repeaters from CHIRP into the ICOM software.
    I called ICOM and they said I should be able to do it as a cvs.
    I tried several ways, saved it as comma separated csv file and tried to import into ICOM software but keeps giving me "Error invalid file".
    I then saved the csv directly to the microSD, then imported feature on radio - "Error invalid file".
    Then I swapped the columns in excel around, to match the column scheme in ICOM software, saved to miicroSD and imported, but alas, "Error invalid file".
    Any Ideas?

      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      +Bruce Wayne Okay - that's allot of information. Are you trying to run in DV (digital mode) or analog mode? Is the unit's GPS locking up where you can use the "repeater near" option?

      @brucewayne-cave 8 років тому

      Commsprepper Only analog at this point. Too far from D-Star repeater. Will have to buy a DV Dongle. GPS is locking up fine. All problems have been resolved, except how to import my repeater list from the Chirp spreadsheet into the ICOM spreadsheet.
