  • The D&D Essentials Kit just came out and I picked up a copy, so here's my review of it! I'm a fan of the adventure and I love the idea of including the DnD Beyond content as a code contained within. It's only available at Target currently (until September 3rd). What are your thoughts on the Essentials Kit? Do you like it? What would you change, if anything? What are your thoughts of it only being available in Target?
To get a copy for yourself you can head to your local Target or pick up here: www.target.com...

I know it's a little late since this video was posted, but I think my answer to your closing question has some good points.
I started playing D&D back in the late 1970s and it faded as an activity between friends and geeks by 1990.
Almost 30 years later and I'm about to be a DM for my husband and teenage kids; all of them think my stories of D&D are just absurdities.
The Essentials Kit gives me the opportunity to put my family into a campaign for the very first time and for them to learn some personal strengths and very real social skills with only a modest cash investment.
For $25, the quality is fine. This one small kit will provide days of entertainment and new experiences. I will add to their learning with gifts of velvet bags of new dice, treasure chest boxes and unpainted miniatures; explaining the value of one type of armor or blade over another.
This is a fantastic way to start and a great resource for more experienced players to bring the game to others.

So this post is 2 years later, it's no long a Target exclusive (got mine off Amazon), and I'll say this is what FINALLY got me into D&D. After years and years of just not having enough people to play with, the ability to only be able to play with 2 people is what sold me on this.
I've since bought the original Starter Kit as well, and I think the Essentials Kit is a much better "starter kit" than the actual Starter Kit. It's not a perfect story and has some balancing issues (but so does Lost Mine of Phandelver). I like that the dragon is the focus. There are more useful tools for new players & DMs. You can actually create your own character instead of just getting a pre-made sheet (another big selling point for me). With just a little tweaking this adventure can be really fun and so far my family has been really enjoying it.

The complaints about the dice is kinda dumb. The dice in a starter set shouldn’t be something special. It’d be nice sure, but we shouldn’t expect it or be disappointed when they are something basic.

    • @RPGImaginings
      @RPGImaginings 5 років тому

Makes me wonder if people give any consideration to what produces a particular price point. Dice are ten plus bucks a set retail for really nice ones. And they expect to get 11 premium dice in a starter set that costs 25? I tell ya, you could give some gamers a hundred dollar bill and they'd lambast you for handing it to them folded.

Agreed a good set of is like $10/15 or more for a $25 Dollar kit I would not expect a set of 11 piece dice that made me excited! All the other things in there are what make the very special! Sorry I’ll stop rambling now...

I've been playing since 1980, and I have to admit that this is the best D&D starter set I've ever seen! Literally everything you need to start playing in addition to some nice props (the cards). I started with the original blue box set with the dragon cover (before the red and blue sets) and I would have killed to have something like this back than. It includes so much more than the 5th ed Starter Set, although the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure alone is worth the cost of that, especially from Amazon. WotC hit this one out of the park, IMO.

Not really with you on the dice, I prefer gem dice so I can see that they're solid and bubble-free, and I love that they included 2d20s and 4d6s in this set. They didn't have to, but they did. Great decision to make the poster map the player versions so you can actually spread them out on the table for your players, unlike, say, Curse of Strahd that had only DM-keyed maps on the posters. Also, with the exception of the Initiative cards, all the table flair they included looks quite good and useful. Really slammed it out of the park here fixing what were my biggest gripes about the old Starter Set (no poster map, and no table flair). I'm definitely picking this one up.

I’m getting it even though I’ve DMed for 15 years. It’s a nice optional adventure.

I found another video that compared it to the starter kit and explained it a bit better in a 5 minute video

RPG Imaginings He’s right when I typed in D&D essentials kit review this was the only video with ‘Review’ in the title. Yet every time something I want reviewed comes out this guys like ‘maybe we will make a new video going over this in the future’ he does this with everything. I’m not saying this video was bad, but I completely agree he shouldn’t have put REVIEW in the title because this isn’t a review this is an unboxing. You can’t do a real review on something you’re opening for the first time on the video. You have to read and get to know what you’re reviewing. I gave this video a dislike for putting review in the name. Because review was why I clicked and review is not what I got.

I feel like this product is perfectly suited to me. My girlfriend and I moved away from home for a few years while she's going to school and I no longer have a play-group. I've been wanting a product that is well-suited to a 1 PC and 1 DM game, and I think this is it. I'll be able to start DMing and introduce the game to my girlfriend who is a little freaked out with the idea of role playing in a larger group. Plus I think the sidekicks are really cool.

I started with the red box with Jeff Eastley cover. I liked that it had those 2 solo adventures so you could learn as you read.
Having said that I definitely would have been stoked to have more dice, some handouts and a DMs screen right out of the box. I think this new set looks really good.
Can't wait until September so I can buy it here in Canada.

The adventure is designed so that you can put it together with Lost Mines and make a mini campaign setting. (Haven't read it, just going off what Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford have said in interviews.)

I am a seasoned DM and player. The $25 for it is right for what you get. I like the extras a lot. I think the conditions cards were great even though they are not the quality of GF9 card products, but what do you expect for $25 bucks. The DM sceen is nice as well. If the adventure is close to what LMOP is then this will be a great edition.

I remember some years ago when Steve Jackson Games published Munchkin: Legends (Greek and Norse Myths) and released it as a Target Exclusive for a while, before it became more widely available.

My 12yo wants to play, so I picked this up as well as the starter kit because why not? Its what the starter kit should have been (hello MAPS!) and shouldn't (no pregens in this one?). They really needed to add something more than a passing sentence on combining the adventures from the two kits maybe, and yay for sidekicks as I'll have to do dm + 1 player, so a sidekick will really help out there without having to try and dumb down the entire adventure... I havnt dm'd 5e or touched ad&d since 2E so this is going to be an interesting run...

Hey Nerd Immersion - to your question to the seasoned players... how would it have been if I would have gotten started on a product like this vs. how I got started... It's hard to say. I started by joining a group of existing players that ramped me up and that is my benchmark. If I was picking up books for the first time and trying to start... I do think a starter set like this would be really helpful. I wonder if I would get a bit spoiled with all of the premade handouts for loot, quests, NPCs etc. Thats some really nice stuff there. I made a similar review to yours and I still do think that the barrier of entry for someone trying to come into the hobby cold, never played before is still high. You gotta get your head around a lot of concepts to run a game. I think a bite sized one shot is the perfect preface to something like this for someone in that scenario.
Keep up the great work dude.

I think you were a bit hard on the dice. If I was a new player who didn't have dice I'd rather have a fuller set of all (most?) of the dice I need than a fancier set that only had 6 dice.

Never played any D&D , been wanting to get into it then all this OGL chaos happened. I was about to buy the Essentials Kit before the leak happened. Is it still worth it to get this kit to dip my toes into TTRPG? I was leaning towards this one because of the stuff it comes with.

Waiting for mine to come in the mail and it's likely to just be a part of my D&D collection and not for use. While I personally haven't looked at the set with my own eyes I fell a bit underwhelmed. As you mentioned the inclusion of the nice printed map (double-sided), bound booklets, new art, and digital content is nice. I can't really judge the value of such introductory products as I've been playing for "Years"; however if it gets people into D&D I guess it can't be that bad. I like many players who started in AD&D learned the game using the tried and true drinking from a firehose method when we were introduced to the game by a friend, older sibling ect and that worked for me but people have different learning styles.

Wow dude it's a start set. It's targeted to people who haven't played before not collectors looking for an exclusive dice set, or collectors who want to throw it into a bookshelf so they can feel like they completed their DND source materials. Collectors are buying this no matter what it comes with, new players need an onramp to the hobby. I gotta stop watching unboxing videos they are total collector jerkeoff videos.
