First determine the problem, the solution will be different for different causes Causes can be 1- idea is too difficult to express. Slow down until you find the words to express it 2- frustration with word count 3- too many ideas trying to get out at the same time. Take pen and paper and make a mind map or calm yourself 4- fatigue. Rest or take a break , come back later, dont exhaust yourself 5- lack of preparation. Go back to previous processes and work on them 6- distracted. Shut off devices 7- general stress. Do something else to calm down Your pace will vary, sometimes you will be slow, just accept it. Give yourself time and dont be too hard on yourself!
Thank you, it was nice to hear some advice in such a calm and simple way, I must say that feeling the writer's block just brings about more stress and feeling of being more stuck...I think my block might come from the pressure of getting things right (because of supervisor's comments of being clear, concise, making it exciting and everything at the same time!) and because having my first draft fully written doesn' leave much space for my brain to make corrections and for thoughts to flow in a freer way maybe...? Anyway, thank you for the advice!
I did a workshop once that gave me the best tip for when I try to just write without stopping to fix the spelling or grammar errors - turn off spell check (so you don't have the distracting red lines appear), and change the font colour to white, or pale yellow.. That way, you won't get distracted by imperfections in what you're typing ☺️
Just writing without stopping is the worst advice. You have to learn the skills to deal with the problems that arise, rather than just rushing. If you do follow the "just write" approach, you at least have to stop and tidy up on a regular basis, otherwise you can easily end up with hundreds of pages of unusable rubbish.
It’s super helpful. But suggested solutions seem too hard for me, an ABD mom. My brain and body are exhausted in many ways. During pandemic plus winter, taking a walk even seems often impossible.
This is why it's so important! If you can't get outside for 10 minutes, how can you hope to do something much harder (writing your thesis)? Start with simple but slightly challenging things and build up your confidence from there
