Hello. I planted Mara Des Bois 15 years ago. I imported the plant from Marionnet France, and as a strawberry expert, it is by far the most delicious strawberry ever. But the importance of Mara Des bois is not only the taste of the fruits, but the smell. Just hold the fruit through the stem with your teeth for few minutes, and you will feel complete relaxation through your body. It is an organoleptic fruit that affects the human sensory system. Amazing effect on stressed and nervous times.

thank you for sharing Rodolph. As a strawberry expert are there any interesting varieties you suggest that I try?

Unideally ripened strawberries that you get from the super market just taste like a sour vegetables with a touch of strawberry. Home grown or as you found them, fully ripened and carefully packaged strawberries are some of the best fruits you can get outside of the tropics IMO.

I used to go picking wild strawberries back in the day. They were 1000x times better than normal strawberries. This seems like something I would like to try too!

I 100% agree nothing like them. I think because they are just out in the wild and had to struggle gives them their character.

I've been picking up these in the wild in the south west of france since I'm a kid. Mine are quite a bit smaller but I'm always amazed at how a fruit not bigger than a blueberry contains more taste than a normal strawberry.

That's the size of the original strawberry in the 50's and 60's. Those had an intense flavor and a nice amount of sweetness. Then in the 70's they started to come out with a larger strawberry, but less flavor. Now we have huge strawberries without the intense flavor, ... sadness!

Have you ever tried Fragaria moschata, the musk strawberry? I tried an ancient cultivated variety in Italy, and it's one of the most amazing fruits you can imagine. Wonderfully fragrant, but unfortunately it has got just a pretty short fruitening season, in late spring to early summer. They're like a larger and very enhanced version of wild strawberries. The one I tried was "Profumata di Tortona".

I don't know if you recall a while back I suggested that you buy some Dobson NC strawberries if you are going through VA or NC. They are exactly like what you are suggesting only they are extremely sweet! Also we sell them for under $2 for the same dry pint that you paid $8 for! So, if you're coming through Southwest VA or on I-77 South going through Dobson NC in the next month, stop and try theirs!!! Love the video!

Strawberries are my absolute favourite fruit, but only for a couple of weeks in late June and early July, when I can get locally grown Ontario berries from the farmers' market. Otherwise, especially way out of season, they taste more like a photo of a strawberry.
Have you tried strawberries with some freshly cracked black pepper? Delicious!

Doubtless as a hybrid strawberry (though a small one), it is more productive and practical than a tiny wild strawberry (alpine strawberries, Fragaria vesca, have runnerless, day neutral forms; musk strawberries supposedly have a more unique flavor). I will try growing some Mara des Bois this year. However I am still curious how it compares to the Alpines (especially since "yellow" [white/cream] ones are less likely to be stolen by birds or men, who assume red=ripe; there are no "yellow" hybrid strawberries that I know of--lose the benefit of anthocyanins [pigments] but still have something to eat, and vitamin C to boot). Keep your eyes open for Alpine and/or musk strawberries, please.

i would buy those and enjoy a real strawberry! The wild ones here (Utah) grow on the mountain, in meadows. They are the size of small chickpeas. The flavor is incomparable. But they are hard to find because the critters get them first. Would like to see cultivars like Mara de Bois become more popular!

Each variety of berry has its own unique flavors. The problem with anything "store bought" is the lack of nutrition within the fruit due to depleted soils or soiless cultivation. The depth of the flavor comes from the vitamins, minerals, macro and micro nutrients that the fruit absorbs from the soil. All commercial farm land in this country is exhausted of all of these. All most are growing on is a petroleum derived diet of NPK. Pick a variety you enjoy the flavor of but most importantly grow in a healthy soil. You will not be disappointed with your efforts. I have grown three varieties of June bearers, my favorite being the Sequoia. I am planting a plot of these this coming Spring.

If you grow strawberries they will be red all the way through and much better tasting if you add calcium to the soil. Sprinkling crushed egg shell on the soil will do the trick. Added calcium also prevents blossom end rot in tomatoes.

I live in the north of Sweden and here we have a belief that strawberries taste sweeter due to the constant sunlight and relatively cool summers. Something about the berries gets packed with fructose to withstand a random frost night. Don't know if this is true or just a myth, though I have to say I have yet to taste any strawberries as sweet as the ones I get from the north... even southern swedish berries aren't up to par.
