The Roots on the beat. Black Thought and Eve with the bars. Jill Scott with the pen. Badu with the vocals. This. Is. ROYAL!

This *WORLD* needs more New Music from The Roots & Erykah Badu!!!💯💯
And the world needs to embrace their underground protégés and disciples!
90's hip-hop was clearly the peak of creativity and skill. This song is a perfect example of what the genre can be. We gotta demand artists get back to this. Until then, we still have these classics.

Jill Scott wrote it and her version is better.
ua-cam.com/video/ff5UFjzFRd8/v-deo.html
Jill Scott was the original vocalist, but she got replaced with Badu since Jill wasn't well-known at the time and the producers wanted someone who was high profile.
@@onsokumaru4663 that's interesting, I'll be sure to listen to this version! Thanks.
That drumbeat is cold! On point, just taking the song to the next level. Badu's voice is jazzier than a saxophone.

As a casual guitarist & drummer, I always notice the groove, the beat initially. Lyrics come second or last. 20 years later, that still holds true. Yes, the lyrics are on point, but the seemingly simple beat, bassline & guitar melody do more than anchor the song. ❤

We need to go back to this please! I really miss these kinds of songs as a kid. I love that 90s feel and I absolutely love the nostalgic feel but the realization that we've moved on where the subject matter is now primarily focused on money, bitches and drugs is absolutely disgusting.

That section at the end when the drum pattern switches up has always been one of my favorite moments in hip hop...so simple and effective, makes you listen to the entire track to get there.
So beautiful indeed
It becomes a drill type beat lmao

@@kuwumiefn6943 nah its a jungle type rhythm, pretty sure Questlove (the drummer) went to London and got inspired by jungle which he heard while he was in UK. Honestly this is probably the best song I’ve ever heard. Thought is a genius and badu flows so nicely off him. I get chills every time this comes on and I bought this album the day it dropped.
"You Got Me" was a Grammy winning song with a groundbreaking video. Before post 2000 apocalypse movies like "28 Days Later" made people disappear with special effects and city streets empty of life, the video director did it with a city devoid of life with Black Thought being the last man alive as he leaves his apartment to find his woman. The powerful twist at the end has Black Thought lay down to join his woman in death, but to find out he's the only one dead as a gunshot victim and everyone dead were actually alive.
Perfect
