Thanks Mate!Information is a bit scarce here in South Africa,so I really appreciate all your info!Going to binch watch all your videos for my AC Cobra build 👍🏻
Pulled on of the COP out of my IS200 and looks like a perfect fit. Same length, 23.3mm diameter and an angled connector. The only issue is that the hold down is sideways so it would need to be cut off to fit in the valley of the rocker cover.
I would loved if I had all this information in one spot, when I did my conversion. I came up with 2 UZ coils from China. Perfect match, but the bracket has to go. I removed it completely with a router and a jig. File and Sandpaper works too. Then I printet ABS brackets, that press them down in pairs, uning the original bolt holes. Front and rear bracket are different, because the first hole that holds normaly the cover, is longer distance.
Ive been told this info would have been helpful earlier by a few people now. Good to see others have come across these same things and at ways they have solved the problems. Cheers Kelvin
Really good info mate. One day when the wreckers re-open to pickers I’m going to see if corolla coils are any different to Yaris, I suspect not. It looks to be 2/3uz coils for the win if not running the covers in my opinion.
@@CartuneNZI see it's been two year since upload but I'm killing life time watching these vids but it's worth while.but hears a thing ,rather than stretch the coil spring why don't we get hold of or make some extra long tips for the spark plugs and just screw them on. .if you understand what I'm trying to say...
The yaris short coils are my least favorite due to not just the short spring but the shorter insulation of the coil the spark plug as well. Spark plug models like some bosch have different longer tips which would work fine, but it doesn't solve the insulation issue. I like the 2uz coils for gen 1, the v6 coils which bolt into gen 2, or audi R8 which fit both.
Swapping from 1ZZ COPs to R8 COPs because of this video. Shaving the sides of the 1ZZ coils has not been ideal, the contact with it's spring to the spark plug is also not ideal, lots of corrosion has developed over time. The VAG/R8 coil should solve both of these problems. Thanks again for this beautiful information as always!
As far as the K20 coil connector being in the way. What you really want is Honda 2.4L Denso 099700-148 from several other Honda models. These have the same bolt hole but smaller connector. I did a cross reference on Rockauto by starting my search for 2009 Accord 2.4L and I get every car that uses these. And yes I have test fitted on 1uz 1st gen. This is what i'm using, Logic coils only requiring 5v triggers from Stand alone.
@@mahlonwest277 I should make a quick video for my channel and link from here. But to answer your question, no modification to connector is required. Some of the bolt holes line up almost perfect to the existing threaded holes on the valve covers. These 3 pin connectors (pigtails) are shared on various other sensors on the K motor. They have release tabs on top rather then on the side and are very compact But I don’t want you to think you can simply drop these in, you will require a stand-alone computer to which I use Megasquirt for everything.
My minimum would be a link monsoon although I prefer a storm. If wanting wideband units then having an ecu which has that feature is a better choice like a thunder.
I had the 2AZ (RAV4) non-fitty coils, sanded them down, stretched the springs. They worked and it is nice to be able to bolt them down to the factory points but not ideal, for the effort of sanding and stuffing around getting the spring to contact the plug properly i wouldnt bother again, id use the VVTI UZ or VAG ones in future
Kelvin do u think it’s a good idea to go on an aftermarket ecu, do small mods like coil on plug and mainly learn the software if I eventually plan to boost the motor on my 1uz 93 sc400. Or just keep it stock until I go boosted
Getting an aftermarket ecu in and configuration sorted before going turbo is a great idea. Bonus is you will also get more power even naturally aspirated
Have you done or (if you can be bothered) do an explanation video on how to wire in COP's into a 1UZ Non VVTI in a wasted spark setup on a standalone ecu? Link Atom, Link Monsoon, ect?
Any use running 1 step colder and or slightly tighter gap on a ‘00 LS400? 500lbs equipment in the trunk..110degree days. Crappy gas and plenty of highway/city driving. Appreciate your educated input.
Most likely no point going colder spark plugs and I definately would not close the gap, providing the correct iridium or platinum spark plugs are fitted, and are within their service intervals. Cheers Kelvin
Thanx for what you do , Kelvin. Question...Got 1998 GS400 1UZ-FE VVT-i with original coils. Sometimes get rough idle , NO codes. Changing plugs so was gonna do coils too. When is it time to replace with new coils...Jeff
I have a spark tester for testing the coils so when they drop in output I fit a whole new set. If any of them fail I also fit a new set as I figure if one has failed the others will follow. Its also possible to swap to the later 3uz or 2uz style coils which are more available but it does require a connector change. Cheers Kelvin
The same things they did to the 1uz vvti. So vvti heads, updated intake manifold, lighter thinner weaker rods for fuel economy, and a bump in compression. Coil on plug. Thats it.
Used it, its only ok. We have it on a racecar and in that situation its not ideal due to the tendency of the resistors in the insulators to fall out, however in the racecar we are often checking spark plugs. On a road car where the plugs are not removed as much it would be more suitable. No issue with misfires. R8 are much cheaper and work well, I've used 4 pin toyota coils with plenty of success too.
We sell these headers. They are listed on trade me here in nz for local customers otherwise email my PA on info@thecartunecompany.co.nz for overseas purchases. Cheers Kelvin
So I found the coil pack conversion. How do I delete the distributor rotors now? Just remove the wires, rotors, rotor covers, and distributor boxes? That’s it? Or do I have to cut and remove some wiring that’s currently in the distributor?
I have the Lexus 1uz vvti I run the spitronic Mercury 2. When replacing the co-op's I accidentally bought the npboosted coil on plug conversion for the 1uz non vvt-i. And upon installing them every time as soon as I turn the ignition on it blows the coil fuse every time. Is there a timing setting that I can change to prevent that from happening where are the coils I purchased not compatible with the 1uz vvti?

The Factory units are perfectly fine on the stock VVti however I might consider moving from the early coils on the UCF20 and UZS151 to the later 3uz unit like the UZS170 series crown VVti engine had as they are more available. Cheers Kelvin
what would be the cheapest route to go forced induction on a stock lexus Sc400?
