This video illustrates how a shepherd should love his flock. Instead of berating someone legalistically for the minimal amount of time spent on the Bible, he gives encouragement and ideas on how to utilize that time best. Then, at the end, there is that final nod of encouragement and exhortation...almost daring the person to taste the fruit, then see if it isn't so delicious you'll want more. That, in my mind, is love. Thanks for the video.

+ezequiel1272 Praise the Lord! Thank you for your encouragement. Dr. Whitney is a great example of the type of pastoral hearted faculty we are blessed to have here at Southern Seminary. This "Honest Answers" series was actually created to try and share their wisdom and pastoral heart with the world. We are so grateful that you have benefited from that! Thanks for watching and we hope you continue to follow this series.

Thank you Pastor for understanding the struggle of each Christian. We are a work in progress. Sadly, this 'state' in our walk with the Lord is sometimes abused bused and I think a gentle rebuke is in order. And I think the way you lovingly delivered the encouragement will convict most people. Thank you!

Idk if someone will read this but, i am Christian suffering in OCD, intrusive thoughts and unwanted fears. Everyday i read my Bible, morning and evening (2 devotions) and do the S.O.A.P method for each. Normally a person can do this for 15-30 min. but for me it takes an hour and half up to 3 hrs just for 1 devotion. I’m not saying this to brag, but because of my condition i have a fear that if i don’t understand the verse strictly, God will be angry. I know it’s funny and simple but in me it’s so real. Therefore i need to always find a way to read “i must read or else..” but even tho i still learn so many things, but the problem is i don’t think i can do Pastor Whitney’s advice because I’m afraid. i want to do it for sometimes i need also to bond with my family and friends, but i don’t know if God will be glad. Please pray for me. Thanks.

Keroy hey, thank you for sharing your struggle(s). I don’t want to offend you nor sound judgmental only God know your heart because I don’t personally know you, but by what you shared I see 2 paths, either you have a wrong theology of God or you have not been born again. Again I truly don’t want to offend you God knows I don’t seek to hurt you to destroy your spirit.I seek to help you if I can. Why do I say this ? Consider these following verses they are deep and give us a proper view of How God see Does He has save by His grace
      1. The Cross absorbed the wrath of God
      On behalf of all believers
      Galatians 3:13,romans 2:5,Romana 3:25,Romans 5:9,1 Thessalonians 5:9,1 John 2:2 ,1 john 4:10,2 Corinthians 5:21 etc...
2.God disciples His sons not for evil but for good He doesn’t give us His wrath when we are wrong He Disciples because He Loves is yet this disciple causes the Christian to be in pain yet rejoice because God cares for His people check these bible verses
      Hebrew 12:3-13,proverbs 3:12,revelation 3:19,Deuteronomy 8:5,psalms 94:12,psalms 13:24
This discipline is used to correct us and lead us beck to Him it is not a curse but a blessing.
It sounds to me like you have a wrong perspective of what pleases God and what doesn’t. Everything that is sin is displeasing to God. Yet you must have a right view of what is sin. We are to come to God and read His Word out of desire not out of obligation we delight in Him(psalms 37:4) ( psalms 63:1-8) we long for His Holy presence to taste that He is good (psalm 34:8).
God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7) though the verse is speaking about giving we also give our time to the Lord our of Joy,love and gratitude. It is a disgraceful thing to feel or thing that you are forced to read His Word out of and unhealthy fear. When the Bible speaks about fearing the Lord it is speaking about Hating sin and addressing God not only as Father but has The Sovereign LORD And GOD whom is worthy of all praise and Glory my friend look up godly man like John piper,Paul washer in other words the reforms doctrine of Grace and you will gain an unworthy undeserving viewpoint of who God real is and you will be in woe you will no longer see God as a angry Father but as a loving father Him whom call you out of your hellish hell deserving life in to His Grace and salvation in to His very presence in to His kingdom and in to His family the church, which He personal can down live a perfect life when to the Cross absorbed the wrath of God the Father on the believer behalf so we unworthy sinners could come to Him because the eternal debt has been paid in Full, when Jesus said it is finish in Greek tetelestai means it is paid in full Jesus paid with his sacrifice he literally drank our Hell man this is way to deep for a mortal unworthy men like me to comprehension. But I want to encourage you to study Gods attributes God bless you if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask I’m here to help you.

I thank you so much for this, You’ve actually just discerned me and how it is when I would read the Bible just about a few months ago. I never understand and by the time I get to the 2nd verse I forget what I read in the 1st verse. I always thou if I at lease read a few chapters at least 1 line ore verse will stay in my memory. Will definitely keep on read the word of God and meditate on the verse that pops out, so with that method I’ll at lease memorize and learn a new verse a day.

Took the Spiritual Disciplines class a long time ago actually with Dr. Haykin in a J-term... After reading Dr. Whitney's book, highly recommended, I implemented paragraph reading in my quiet time. I have applied more scripture to my life in this manner than I can shake a stick at... The time is sweet, the time is productive and yes I meditate on God's word always... Ps1. Working with young college students, I encourage them to read paragraphs within God's word and understand the words and meaning. Very helpful and very applicable in our microwave society.

    • @hunterwhittington3812

The gifts given to the apostles by Jesus were for the apostles, not all disciples. The apostles are dead. Those gifts have passed. I prefer if they were not. It would be amazing to see those gifts done today, but objectively, from Scripture, they have passed. Now, that does not mean God is limited suddenly. It just simply means human beings who are christians are not endowed by God to perform those anymore like how Paul and Peter were. Prayer is an excellent gift given to all christians for all time and God is still able to do His Will whatever that may be.

I don't think that "I can do a devotional in 5 minutes" is a worthy goal. That's about all most Christians and even preachers give God in prayer and devotional exercises. Forgot the five minute stuff. I remember right after being born again in 1968 reading how Martin Luther that great Protestant reformer said that he had so much work to do the next day that he would get up earlier and pray an extra three hours, yes an extra 3 hours. That inspired me to press into God more in my beginning spiritual life. I wasn't there at that point. I saw it as a point of reference for me to realize that I hadn't come to mature devotional and prayer life at this point. Although, I was spending much time and studying of God's word till 2: 00 in the morning and soon I was spending times in three day fasts and prayer (Nothing but water and shut in praying). Let some of these sorry pastors that don't pray get alone with God in prayer like old Martin Luther did. We have had enough of water to the ankles lets get out of this low level of lukewarm Christianity and get serious with God. We need a serious revival of prayer and Bible reading coupled with authentic repentance in our church congregations. God deliver us from five minute prayer and devotionals. Get alone with God and pray until you know you have touched God and He has touched you.

A "devotional" time is such a pious religious cliche.
Like being said here, it's not reading the bible that's important, it's HOW you read it. What's the true heart MOTIVE?
But, in all raw honesty, WHERE does it say we're to "meditate" on scripture 🤔.. yeah one verse in Joshua, and they make a whole doctrine on it! And THAT is really just talking about meditating or taking into your heart the whole counsel and wisdom of God as revealed in scripture, not just select verses.
All I do is just read a verse, and simply, like a little child with simple faith, speak it back to Him, and ask his help to live it. Nothing super spiritual like deep meditation, which REALISTICALLY, where's the HOW of "meditating"🤔??? I've heard all this super spiritual counsel since day 1 in my christian walk from 1976, and I dont think it helps anyone. Who really masters this mysterious art of meditating?

Hey brother! What he is saying is if you focus and stay longer on scripture, you're bound to remember it more. Truth be told, most Christians don't read and remember what they read because they read it to feel complete for the day. Never do they truly dive in like he is talking about in this vid. What I do is I focus on one verse at a time when I read a chapter. I break down each verse and take notes on it. It'll be easier to remember when you have a spiritual connection to it. Have a great day!
