Most guitarists tend to overdo distortion when playing this classic riff. Koss was a master of the "clean" overdriven sound, ie Les Paul straight into a Marshall amp producing a more natural sound - and no pedals! Also of course there's the feel and technique of Koss himself, which is which is why he influenced (and is still respected by) so many players who came after him.
