    As others have said the Hurricane rarely gets the credit it deserves compared to the (excellent) Spitfire. It had more kills in the Battle of Britain and as well as targeting bombers it did very well against the fighters too. Hurricanes could out turn the faster fighters, something demonstrated in real life trials and it could take more punishment. Great plane.

    As an ex BBMF ground crew I have always had a soft spot for the Hurricane. Behind the Merlin it is so different to the Spitfire. The Spitfire was the first of a new generation of fighter, the Hurricane the last of the old. You can remove two panels on the bottom of the fuselage of the Hurricane and stand up inside the aeroplane, see right through the cockpit to the instrument panel, turn round and you can see down to the tail, see the metal tubing frame with the wood formers and fabric covering, inside it looks totally in a different world to the Spitfire.

      @@raptor1672 Yes! Just yes! If the 109 would have had a better combat radius, they would have totaled the hurricanes easily. But as it was, once they got there they were already out of fuel. The training manual of the WW2 era FAF states this of the hurricane: The plane is slow and clumsy. When engaged, start turnfighting immediately and aim behind the engine where the fuel tank is. One hit will start a fire usually (and the pilot is directly behind the tank). The hurricane burned many pilots horribly due to this.

      Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY : Well, the USA did win the War of Independence against Britain. Also the Mexican-American war. And they forced a stalemate in the war of 1812. Admittedly, Britain was somewhat distracted by Napoleon, but that's still pretty good for such a young country. The USA wasn't "on the fence" in WWII. It was very deliberately watching the European powers self-destruct so that it could become the new number one. Rather clever, you have to admit.

    • @doug6500
      @doug6500 6 років тому +7

      They forced a stalemate in 1812? I'm pretty sure it was them who invaded Canada, got beaten rotten and then spent the rest of the war hemmed in behind their border. Only Americans could turn something like that into some kind of coming of age party. Pathetic. Sure they won the Independence war but so did France and Spain alongside them - "thanks for stabbing your Protestant mother land in the back and getting vicious Absolute Catholic monarchies like France and Spain to bail you out".
      As for WW2, you're right. They played that like the opportunistic twats they are. What better than war thousands of miles from your borders that you only have to fight half off while selling shit stimulating your industrial space and industry.

I fear Britain is not quite the country it was back then, but for those of us who still cherish our freedoms and understand how hard the fight was to win them, this plane and its contemporaries are embedded in the national psyche. 1. The crowd running in excitement to get closer to the aircraft even though he’s already turning towards them and well aware of them being there.
    2. The sound of the crowd exclaiming in happiness as they realise that he’s going to fly right over the top of them, which is almost instantly lost in the rising roar of the merlin.
    3. The joy in watching the Hurricane salute the waving crowd back, then the utter beauty of it flying out over the cliffs with the sea and the sky ahead, evoking all kinds of emotions - the defence of these islands against tyranny, yearning for an age gone past where being British meant being proud of who we were and what we stood for, and all the while, the magical note of the Merlin over everything.
    Yes, this is short, but it’s one of the best videos on UA-cam I’ve ever seen.

      Totally agree with you,...the normal folk getting a wing salute from the pilot is so heart warming......I was once walking on the beach along Crosby when a Chinook was approaching in the distance,as it the noise grew louder people started looking for it,as it drew over the beach we all started waving and the pilot did a sort of skidding motion from left to right!!........I couldnt get the smile off my face for hours!!!!

    No matter how many times I’ve watched this clip in the years since it was uploaded, it still brings a lump to my throat. 13 years ago when that Hurricane roared overhead there were still a handful of ‘the few’ left: not now I’m afraid to say. We shall not see their like again. My father who died last November was the ‘youngest’ possible age to have served in that war, albeit briefly in 1945 against the Japanese.

    This was the plane used by our romanian national war hero , aviator Horia Agarici ( he was born in Swissland ) . In 1941 he defended alone Port Constanta at Black Sea, He took his Hawker Hurricane even he had some fuel problems and destroyed alone 3 russian Bombers that were preparing to bomb Constata Casino and the rest of the city . The other bombers ran. He was World War II flying ace and a war hero, that lived a hard life after the russian communists ocupied our country. But in a fight he saved the life of a russian fighter , that ran out of ammo. He could had shot him down, but because he had honor he let him flee and ran , making him just a sign with his hand . Later in 60 s that russian pilot that he saved his life, came to Romania ,( he was now a big soviet general ) and Horia was in prison without any rights. He look for him and in sign of respect , he helped him get out of the communist prison ! This is a real story, is a museum and you can goodle it. Would make a great scenario for a movie ! Proud to be Romanian !

    My Grandfather went to war in this during the Battle of Britain. They got Typhoons before D-day but he had to fly night fighter patrols in the Hurricane over Coventry which was extremely stressful. I think the combination of a single seat, single engined fighter with no nav. aids in a war situation would be bad. He was a gentleman and took it in his stride until he passed away in 2001.

    I can already imagine being a youngster in Britain in 1940 and seeing a Hawker Hurricane fly over a village. Such a powerful aircraft. x8 7.7mm. machine guns, a Merlin engine, and a tough airframe.
    It was also the same plane flown by the pilots of the 303rd. Squadron, and did most of the dirty work against the bombers. I don't think the Supermarine Spitfire should've taken all the credit.
