  • It's that time of year! A long tradition of The Urban Gentry channel's lifestyle content has been the studio tour. Or in this case, the "War Room" as nicknamed by the audience. In this video I share some behind the scenes of what goes into making videos about watches on UA-cam and beyond, as well as some nifty upgrades, essential desk accessories, some new additions to my movie collection, handy watch tools and unique new artwork. I conclude this video with some watch collection talk including the Cartier Santos, Casio DW-290, avant-garde brands like Dietrich and Visitor Watch Company, as well as my own current collection, and how they've completely changed my desires and collecting priorities. Is the Romain Gauthier Insight Micro-Rotor still my long term grail watch? Today I share some possible new goals as I begin the hunt for the next piece to add to my collection.

    Hi TGV, it’s the duke of Devonshire that lives in Chatsworth House, though confusingly it’s located for from Devonshire in Derbyshire. Beautiful house and grounds. Interesting fact, when the house was built, the then Duke wasn’t happy he could see the local village from his new house so he had the entire village moved. Nearby in the grounds but out of sight it really is a beautiful little village. Always enjoy your videos, top notch.

    If you're partial to "vintage" Japanese films, Seijun Suzuki's "Tokyo Drifter" is a must. Its use of color, its soundtrack, the action sequences, and its pacing are just fantastic. Easily my favorite Yakuza movie by a mile.

    I really like this stuff because we get a bit more behind the scenes. You had me laughing out loud when talking about movies.
    I'm sure you're all in on them already, but if you're not, you've gotta go down the Dario Argento and Giallo film rabbit hole.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  2 роки тому +6

      AB-SO-BLOODY-LUTELY!!!! Love Argento, his daughter has done some interesting stuff too.
      Thank you my friend, knowing you appreciate Giallo movies has only increased my respect for you. My faves are very predictable, Phenomena and Suspiria, how about you? The remake of the latter was kinda great too IMO.
      Best regards,
      TGV

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage 2 роки тому +2

      @@theurbangentry Of his more classic Giallo films I enjoyed The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Tenebrae. Suspiria is something special especially with the vibrancy of color in that and the more horror aspects. It may be blasphemy, but I may have enjoyed the remake a bit more. I just loved the stark setting and how oppressive it felt, the choreography was also outstanding and reminded me a lot of the original Nijinsky choreography for Rites of Spring; very ritualistic and primal.
      I still need to finish up his filmography before I land on a favorite, but those two you listed are favorites for most people for a reason. They're excellent.

    Great video as always! I recently had the same experience when I bought my first G-Shock (classic DW5600 in retro green). It stopped my burning desire to buy more watches dead in it's tracks. The 'grand complications' of cheap quartz watches outperform most luxury brands also!

    I always add movies to my must watch list after these types of videos. Thanks TGV! As far as less expensive watch content on the channel, I would love to see reviews on more Timex watches. I know you’ve talked about their history quite a bit but would love to see more of their watches actually reviewed. Maybe a top 5 of your favorites or something. Same could be said about more Casios. You can never review too many Casios. Perhaps another strap recommendation video as I believe it’s been a few years since you’ve done one. Keep up the great work. Hi TGV, this is the classic urban gentry video I always enjoy! About entry-level "special" watches, I highly recommend taking a look at Timex watches from the 70s. I know you introduced a Marlin long ago (seems it's from 68-70). Besides such a classic Marlin, there are a lot of very well-designed Timex watches, especially those from the early 70s; retro-futuristic style with "strange" case shapes, original dials and hands, ridiculously robust movement, and they are very affordable (non-serviced around $5-50, serviced: $50-$150). There are also many interesting-looking "Electric" watches of the pre-quartz era. You will find a lot of unique watches! :)

    Doxa sub 300, not the 300t but the 300 with the thin case, bible crystal and small dial. I like small watches ranging from 34-39mm and I have to say this Doxa does not seem big on wrist. This is an icon but it’s very different and could easily be a wild card watch. You don’t have to go with the orange dial.. I have the silver Searambler and it’s so special.

    I Gotta say It's amazing how both of us collect the same carp. Only kidding. I am a big Jurassic park collector, Movie syfy #1 Sheets, watches, clocks and Back to the future. I also Collect real Time machines. Hint! BTTF Delorean. In this I am one of the largest collectors in the world. You are amazing. I am so so glad your health is so much better. You really scared us a few years back. Your intro WOW! It is as amazing as you are. Keep up the video's and from the bottom of my heart thank you for all that you do for your watch fans. You do something for watches that few can. You make collecting fun. "Just a thought in Time."

    Brilliant update on behind the scenes 👏
    As for watches, I would recommend at the more affordable quirky end, SevenFriday watches, believe they even do a sound engineer inspired watch. Or the new Swatch biofriendly material watch (I think it is just a matter of time before sustainability becomes the next big thing in watches). Higher end, definitely go independent watchmaking, like Itay Noy. Doing some amazing quirky watches.

      Mechanical watches are already supposed to last a lifetime. You only need 1. How much more sustainable do they need to get?

    Ahhhh....best video in a long time. Love the movies since I am a movie buff and have worked on a couple films in my youth. As far as your collection....I appreciate your ability to appreciate "less expensive" pieces, but lets face it your collection is full of heavy hitters. Love the Fortis.
    PS...never seen you do a video on Carl Bucherer family owned Swiss brand. I have several vintage pieces. Amazing watchmaker. Worth a look.

    Ciao Tristano! I do not comment very often, definitely not, even on videos I really like.
    This said I’d like so share my appreciation for you as a man first and then as a content creator ofc. I feel like we share a lot concerning art, architecture and watches.
    I wanted to let you know how much i apprecciate the fact you want to keep your channel 100% indipendent.
    Look foreward to meet you in person someday.
    Buona fortuna, Carlo

    Hi, TGV. Another great update. I DO like watches (Omega Seamaster, Luminox Navy SEAL & (less liked!) Digital G-shock here) but I always really enjoy your War Room videos. I guess it's the nosey bugger in me.
    Check out Lyme Hall in Lyme Park, Disley near Stockport. It's about 5 miles from me and was (I think?) Charles II's hunting estate, there's an amazing building called "The Cage" in the park where they used to imprison poachers.
    Some of "Pride and Predjudice " was filmed there, and the great house is very similar in style to Chatsworth.
    Gimme a shout if you're ever "oop North" on your next trip to Blighty and I'll show you round.

    I'll never forget your early videos in front of your bookshelf talking about things like you're workout routine and other old school gentry topics! As for a watch out of left field, what about maybe a high end Citizen like the quartz chronomaster with the paper dial? Or for something higher end, maybe something from Parmigiani?

    Totally on board with your view of stopping from time to time and looking backwards at what is coming onto the market. It is easy to get blinkered on your watch journey and miss out on so much. I like Farer watches and plan to buy one soon. They are British designed and manufactured in Switzerland by Roventa Henex. I love their use of colour. Best regards.

    Finally picked up a Seiko Tuna after all these years. Went for the mini safari which is a great size at only 39mm. Having now scatched that itch i have now set my sights on a new leather armchair for the study. Have already added an Oiva Toikka glass sculpture to the room in order add a splash of colour. I don't envisage too many changes though as i'm an avid believer in less is more.
