I never get tired of this movie. As a youngster I remember all of this, to include the shoot down of Francis Gary Powers. "Do many foreign agents register?" and.. "They sent me someplace hot.".. "Would it help?" classic dialog. Absolutely fabulous 🤣🤣🤣💯👍...
I had the most amazing experience of walking across the Bridge of Spies whilst on holiday in Germany last month. Brought the film back into my mind.... I walked where Gary Powers and Abel walked.....
would it help? WOULD IT HELP?!?! Life lesson people. Anxiety is a true condition for some but for others, it's a condition we can take action on and change. Don't live in fear and worry. It's not what we're called to do.
Mr. Abel and his philosophy is inspired by the Japanese concept of Shikata Ga Nai or Shouganai, absolutely legendary way of thinking, may we all learn to embrace it!
@hughmckendrick3018 Did you consider looking at contemporary photos of federal prisoners at the time? They all have belts. Even many photos from prisoners in State prison are wearing belts. The violence you are describing or even the self harm, may only have been a factor in later generations and the need to remove belts became prudent. So, your criticism doesn’t seem valid because contemporary photos support this costume.,
The end is flapping out, though. Maybe they let him wear it during the interview just to keep his trousers up. It's a noticeable detail that Spielberg might have included deliberately - otherwise it would be a distraction.
"Would it help...?" (reply by asking calmly and politely). Now, that's what I called world class spy.
in my opinion, this is by far the truest incarnation of a spy in a movie.

What is it?
It’s not often Tom Hanks is completely upstaged
Abel was a cool character.
Just a minor criticism, Abel is wearing a belt. Would of thought as a potenial weapon or means of suicide, the authorities would not allowed that.

Back in the day, I doubt they much cared if a prisoner suicided himself.
