Great video and lots of good details in here. The difference between a hub and a bridge is always something people new to HomeKit struggle with and it’s important to get this right. Great job JR!
Great video, John! So I had a question- I currently use my Apple TV (4th Gen) as my HomeKit Hub. However, I wish to migrate to Apple TV 5th Gen. How do I migrate the HomeKit Hub from the ATV 4th Gen to ATV 5th Gen without any issues to my connect smart devices. Thanks
Poor audio plus you missed a key statement of why we have a Bridge to convert radio/infrared signal devices like Philips Hue light bulbs to the HomeKit Hub. The Bridge act as a converter (bridges) between analogue devices to IP WiFi device like HomePod. Apart from that some good information for beginners. Remember a Bridge converters and Hub links devices of the same technology i.e. IP WiFi equipment together and is the central control.
RODkITS43 you are wrong. Hubs in the main enabled devices that connect to the bridge to work with HomeKit. It has nothing todo with converting analog signals, no idea what the f**k you are talking about on that point
Good video Jon. My one Apple TV in a 6000 sq house has suffice thus far, until I recently got the Bluetooth door lock. I was thinking of getting a second Apple TV to help but it won’t since it’s just a standby hub. I might have to get a primary HomePod so I can put it in centralized location.
Looking at maybe ordering a Apple TV 4K to join the homekit eco system. I've got an iPad 4, which I believe is too old sat in a draw, but that stays at home as I have an iPad 2021 Pro. Essentially is the iPad 4 too old and secondly, regarding positioning, if I have multiple Apple 4K TVs, would the devices connect to the best positioned device? I'm running Unfi mesh wireless and pfsense firewall with IOT devices isolated. Ring, Hue, kitchen appliances, alexa, google protect, 6 sonos devices and various other items. The apple devices would be moved into this LAN segment.
Hey! I had a quick question for you. Since my home is quite large, around 5000 SF, how do I control the Ikea smart lights from a distance? (I have a few Ikea gateways to cover the whole house for all the different rooms) because once I leave a particular room, the lights in that room show up as unresponsive on my home kit. Will it work if I set up a few HomePod minis in every room as a home kit hub? or what would you recommend should be done?
Hi. I have set my iPad as a hub. Always stays at home. I’ve set an automation to trigger my Hive heating when myself and my wife leave the house but iPad keeps appearing in the “When people leave” section and as it never leaves, it never triggers! I untick the iPad option but it keeps ticking itself again!?! Is it as I have iPad set to share its location? Should I turn this off? Thank you!! 👍🏻
Hey great videos and very useful information. This one has some kind of weird audio effect. Kind of like it’s desyncing itself/echoing or like it’s really compressed.
What about the scenario where my smart device is Bluetooth and it’s closer to the standby Apple TV. Can I pair the device to the standby hub and will two hubs work cooperatively?
Hello, Great video. I am new to apple home kit. We have an apple tv gen3 and 2 iPads. I have setup Apple TV as a hub and my iPad (for now) as the main home kit controller . I just purchased a Caseta smart bridge bridge pro 2 and will set it up today. My question is, if I take both iPad’s away from the house will I be able to control and automate remotely? What do I need to do in the setup for this to work? Thanks in advance.
Wow thanks for the quick reply. My mistake I have gen 4 model A1625. The issue I’m having now is that I setup the smart bridge pro2 and labels all my lights in the Lutron app. When I connected SB to the Apple TV on my iPad it didn’t import the labels I created. Is this normal?
I don’t follow what your saying. Are you saying that apple home kit software should have imported the reassigned light switch names from SB? Oh I think you meant to say “It should have imported them” I’ll restart everything and try again. Thanks
iPad does not have to be connected to a charger to work as a Homekit hub. I use it daily and leave it it living room so it is in range of Homekit devices. I just charge it reguralry and use it as a normal iPad.
Missing the point. The point I am making is that people might “forget” to charge it. Plus if this is a main iPad then taking it out of the home. Renders home automations useless
HomeKit Authority I use it mine as a main iPad, but it always stays home so it works great as a Homekit Hub. Then when I am going away, nobody’s home so I do not need Homekit automations etc.
I am glad it works for you, every case is different. Although I still use automations when no one is home to simulate people at home or using the location feature to trigger devices such as my drive lights when I am arriving home. But glad it works for you
I like your videos Thanks. I have my bedroom setup with a HomePod and 3 different home kit lights. I speak to Siri to turn lights on and off. Everything works great. However, sometimes on occasion when I ask Siri to turn the lights on or off it will respond saying something is wrong and recommends I go into Settings and fix the issue because not all devices are responding. Well, I don't change anything because I know it is setup correctly. Maybe 10 minutes later I ask Siri to turn the lights on or off and it works ! Why I didn't change anything. Any ideas as to what is going on ? Thanks
I personally use Lightwave which require you to replace the entire switch. I also use Philips hue wireless switch with a box that covers the existing light switch
Update. I deleated the Smart Bridge Pro (SBpro) from Apple HomeKit. Restarted Apple TV, SBpro and iPad. Added SBpro and same results. It didn’t import the light switches I already named in the Lutron app. So I’m just going to manually rename them in Apple HomeKit. Weird

Thanks Chris! Everyone, Chris is a fellow Homekit/smart home youtube. Check out his great content - m.ua-cam.com/channels/QHfJyIROQhDFUOJKVBiLog.html
Good video jon. Quick question how to set up homekit icon in the control center? Thank you.

Love the Dalek on the shelf!
Great video Jon! I just wish Home hubs would create a mesh HomeKit network. We can dream, can’t we?
Maybe one day!
The audio on this is difficult to hear. On my tablet it clips, and the tonal range is highly compressed.
Yes, someone else has reported this and I am looking into it
Agreed. Poor audio quality made the video difficult to watch.
Looking into the cause

Homekit hubs certainly help with Bluetooth devices. Had very little issues since I got a HomePod

This video was very helpful! You answered many of the questions I had about seeing this up. I’m off to buy an Apple TV 😁
Thank you for watching

Is ZigBee (sry if misspell it) the same as
Z-Wave products?

Thanks for watch! I will take a look and what happened
Can you cause confusion by having more than 1 AppleTV as a hub? Will AppleTV hub play nice with Google, Samsung, FEIT, Phillips, or other hubs?
What about the scenario where my smart device is Bluetooth and it’s closer to the standby Apple TV. Can I pair the device to the standby hub and will two hubs work cooperatively?
Nice video! Do you think anyone will bring a Homekit to market?
That depends on a number of factors. Apple needs to do some changes in the framework. It would be nice to have one device for HomeKit.

You will need a gen 4 Apple TV if you want to keep your automations running

It should not have impacted them

Hi John do these only work with apple.all my devices are android?
Excellent vidéo. It demystifies HomeKit. Thank you.
Love your channel

Very helpful
Glad you think so!

Thanks for watching! What devices are using?
@@HomeKitAuthority LifX bulbs
need a Bridge from home kit to power Hue lights from hue or must you get a Philips Bridge
true
What Smart light switches do you recommend compatible with HomeKit?
I personally use Lightwave which require you to replace the entire switch. I also use Philips hue wireless switch with a box that covers the existing light switch
HomeKit Authority is this the one?

Sorry I didn’t get a notification of this comment. Yes it is
Great video and explanation!!!
Thank you Jason 🙏
Can the HomePod mini act as a hub
Yes
Brilliant
Can I use more iPads around the house
As many as you want

Strange
Do I need good internet to use HomeKit
For outside use yet, but it can work without internet
Why can't HomeKit routers be used as a hub? It can forward ports
Different tech and only Apple devices can be used as a hub
You can expose none Apple certified products into Homekit using Homebridge, even my Lidl LED’s work connected to my Hue Hub in Homekit ;)
But you can get a Homekit hub from Starling?!
That’s a Homekit bridge. Only works with Nest devices to enable HomeKit
Can't you just use an old iphone?
Whats an omap
so funny how he says "omekit Höb"
Do NOT open all your ports...only open the ones required. There is a reason why it's a firewall...
Can’t use an iPad anymore. Don’t know why. Ladies and gentlemen: Apple.
Nope, sorry, didn’t,t hear one how to.
Bad audio
