Great Jupiter, someone who doesn’t imitate Oscar, but rather gives life again to his wonderful musical language, but with personality. I feel like I was in the 90s again when I studied jazz and heard Peterson for the first time: a bit like in a jazz pianist’s heaven.
"My Shining Hour", Incredibly swinging throughout!!!, with at least seven key-changes and absolutely no loss of effect in structure, form, rhythm or time. Fantastic! Ben Paterson, whom I have only heard tonight for the very first time, has suddenly become a firm favourite with me. He is accompanied here on "My Shining Hour", by Jake Vinsel on bass, who could easily be compared to Chuck Israels or the late Scott La Faro, long-term supporters of Bill Evans. Paterson might well have attracted Miles Davis's attention had times been in a different scale and dimension. It is obvious that Ben is influenced not only by the great Bill Evans himself, from his famous Village Vanguard experiences, but also by Oscar Peterson, whose scintillating energy and sheer drive Ben seems to have inherited. What an incredible young player! This is what we need in Jazz, a continuum of greatness. Ben Paterson most certainly provides that. Thank you Joe Martinez for this magnificent video. Best wishes, everyone. Joe Silmon-Monerri, author/jazz reedman, Manchester, UK.
YES! I LOVE this guy's playing... SWINGS like mad. (Just to clarify...."7 key changes", but only 2 keys C and Eb)... this is very commonly done on this tune, and many others like "The Days Of Wine and Roses", and "On Green Dolphin Street".
@@handdancinquite true, there are some more eccentric, sometimes broadway musical-like, archaeologic moments that seem to derive from Tatum's humor and wit oscar peterson seems to always convey a form of that energy and wit, as he is so imbibed with Tatum in a certain way
Yes Ben is bad which means in jazz terms he Is great in tickling those ivories on the piano keys. He has his own style and is playing like the great jazz men of yesterday, today and always.so Ben keep up the great works and u will go down in history with the rest of the Giants of music,.thanks 4 listening Maria is my name.
Merci "Ben Paterson" 🎼🎹🎺🌺🎧🎼🎼 Ben Paterson - Piano Jake Vinsel - Bass Merci to Joe Martinez Jr. for this great Video.
Typical of me, in my last comment I omitted to say that no drummer is listed here, but whoever is on skins is fantastic and well qualified to play with these other two greats of Jazz. Joe S-M.
Tom Reeves Hello Tom, nice to hear from you. You must know more about Ben Patterson than me! I listened again very carefully, and looked very carefully. I didn't see a drummer, but I'm sure I heard one in there somewhere. Maybe I'm talking through el sombrero again!!! What's your take, Tom? Best wishes. Joe S-M.
Tom Reeves Hello Tom. Well, are you going to leave me in suspense? Who is he/she? Of course, with such a great, percussive and versatile bassist as Mr Vinsel, you hardly feel the need for drums, but whoever he/she is, I would like to acknowledge their presence and very smooth and unobtrusive contribution; to be almost inaudible, yet effective in percussion, takes enormous skill and expertise. BW. Joe S-M.
Tom Reeves OK, thanks Tom. I thought you were referring to Paterson's possibly non-existent drummer. Perhaps he was overdoing the quasi-inaudibility thing, by actually not being present!!! Joe S-M
Great playing, nice version of a classic. But what is that clicking sound? Someone's foot? Taps on shoes? No! Almost like a metronome, but not as solid.
sorry what is making that tapping sound? Personally the piano and bass is so swinging already it'd be better without that tapping sound. Only my own preference.

Oscar would be proud!!

This is about the most swingingest jazz I've heard. Kicks arse! And so musical!!! Love it!
The rambling arpeggios on the left hand together with a different groupings on the right out of nowhere, is pure genius. Damn you!
What touch, what drive, what music. Thank you.
When listening to Ben Paterson, one can understand the difficulty of addicted people: it's impossible to stop listening! It's sooooo good !
Yup, there is something addicting to his style.
Well, we know someone has played a fair bit of Oscar Peterson!
Awesome!
Anthony Gibes he’s just implying that some of those licks sound like the style of Oscar Peterson... what’s wrong with that?
It's mostly Ben with some Oscar influence without the bombast!
Bravo! That is wonderful! MORE!!!!
Never in my life heard and seen such genius jazz. Tight, intricate, and free all at the same time.
Incredible improvisational playing that makes great sense.

Бесподобно! Шикарный свинг. Браво от русских зрителей! У Оскара Питерсона достойный продолжатель, и это внушает надежду, что джаз не умрёт никогда!

Have you ever considered moving to England Ben?

So tasteful, thank you. And love the key changes! I used to play it alternating minor 3rds each chorus as well! Great minds think alike. LOL!
This is what happens when 'fire' and 'discipline' have a party...
Ben IS wearing Peter Oscarson's mantle.
