I found your channel recently and it's a hoot ! It's also the BEST for getting the up close details in HD,,, no one does it better ! FYI,, the 60' Mercurys had headlights separated like the Olds, I think they were the only two that did that..
I really love how you point out all of the little design details and the enthusiasm you convey. Looking forward to seeing many more cars that time forgot. CHEERS!
This is going to be a fantastic channel. This guy knows his cars, and this era is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of automotive design. This is truly going to be a Joy Ride!
As I have written before; my mother purchased Black 59 Oldsmobile SUPER 88 that was a year old traded in for 61 Ford galaxy 500. I was in college and I think we got the best of the two cars. I drove it often and we must of had it until traded in for a 69 Olds 98. Was one of the best cars owned. Later I purchased 59 light blue 98 from an estate, another great car; fast, safe and good gas mileage( 22/26 mpg).
Love Palm Springs our annual family holiday destination for more than 25 years - love love love the place! Love the people love the architecture and love the cars!
Charles.....you are a master of discovering these beautiful examples of perfect Americana!!!! Beautiful...... So when you run for President, your campaign SLOGAN MUST BE... ... I know!!!". Charles, you are THE MAN.
I love JOYRIDE. Charles keeps his reviews short (too short, actually) but at least he doesn't stick his camera in the exhaust pipe and then tells the owners to rev the engine. I don't need to hear that because....I KNOWWWWWW 😄 Charles, you are truly a piece of Americana. And no, you don't belong in a museum. For now. MORE! MORE!
I like to imagine pulling up to that house in that car late at night after having just spent an evening at the drive-in theater... The good old days....
That color is so 1959! When I was a young boy that color reminded me of ice cream. Still does! My brother and I referred to Oldsmobile as an "Olds-mo-bubble". Love the deep center steering wheel, the wrap around back window, the dashboard, the color! Beautiful job Chris, Congratulations!
Dear Charles Phoenix, I don't know which one I liked best - the car or the fifties house! Probably both! In 1959, I was only eight years old, but I already could distinguish most of the cars' year and brand. At the time, I remember a neighbor living around the corner, who owned one 1959 brand-new olds (well, if 88 or 98 I was not aware) exactly alike, the same tone of seawater green. He was a physician, with no hour to leave and return home after his patients. As the car was so big and his garage so small, he soon gave up parking the car inside his garage, leaving it outside along the street night and day
This is MORE than a classic car! MORE than a mid century modern masterpiece! This is a world class national treasure! If I was given the choice of a late fifties classic American car it would be between this and a 58 Plymouth. If I could only pick one I'm sure I would have sleepless nights trying to decide which one was coming home with me!
Those rear windows must be awfully expensive to replace. "Unobtainium," as the say. But very very cool. Glad to see the car's in such great shape for an original.
My dad had one of these. His was two tone white and gold or a bronze color as I remember. I seem to recall the speedometer changed color the faster you drove. I was really young but I liked that car.
Hi, yes the speed O was green then when you got to 70 mph it turned red because back then most highways speed limit was 70. My parents had same car when I was little but was 2 door and it had power windows that I specifically remember. 😁
I always loved Oldsmobiles! Wrap around glass is so graceful, elegant, & XXXX-E (have to keep it clean on YT) LOL! As a kid I used to collect wheel covers & emblems to decorate my room. I wanted to be an automotive stylist.
I believe the GM inhouse design name for the roof was the wafer roof. As well, I believe the first generation Corvair was referred to as the wafer body. It seems apparent when viewing from above.
When I see these classic cars, I’m reminded of my neighbors as their cars often defined their personality (if not their budget). “Mrs. P” around the corner owned a two-toned cream and ale colored version of this car. A recent divorcée, schoolteacher she wanted a stylish car that wasn’t outrageously opulent.
I have to correct what you say about GM being the only manufacturer to make a car with a wraparound rear window. Look to the 1958 Edsel Corsair and Citation. My dad had a 58 Edsel Corsair when I was a kid. One thing that he said is that it never left us walking. He's shoving 80 now and has driven many vehicles.
The 98s had a 3" longer wheel-base than the 88s. Question: Does anyone know where the extra 3" was inserted - which panels are different? Hood / cabin / or rear deck? Judging from appearances, the hood and front fenders are the same. If it's in the cabin, then the roof must be different, plus either the door or the rear quarter panel and the side-glass. To keep the number of panel/trim changes down to a minimum, my guess is that the "stretch" is in the rear deck, with the deck lid staying the same, and that the extra 3" are in the rear quarters and in the panel between the rear screen and the deck lid. Does anyone know for certain? Thanks in advance...
BTW. Those black inset panels you'll see on a 57 Chevy look like horsehair. A traditional fiber for fancy furniture. My neighbor used to restore Chevys.
Cars don’t have detail anymore even in the 70’s up to 90’ certain cars showed-detail. My 76’ Olds 98 my dad’s79’ riviera every little item had detail. Even his 89’ and 90’ Seville had it. Any handle or button had their logo or chrome or stainless steel but today not so much I knooow My daughter has a 2017 Jaguar not the most expensive one it’s beautiful and a blast to drive but the door panels are all black plastic no detail no carpet no chrome on panels nothing. I asked her if she wants a custom wood dash they sell decals like that stick on she said, no daddy wood is for older people like you would want that lol I know
Or you could look at a colour card? Plenty on eBay. I'm 99% sure that this is the same colour as used by Pontiac that year. Pontiac called it "Seaspray Green" but Olds may have called it by a different name. (For instance, from previous checking I found out that Oldsmobile, Buick, and another division all used the same metallic reddish colour in '59 but with wildly different names: Oldsmobile called it "Burgundy Mist Metallic" - but Buick called it "Lido Lavender" - I forget the third name. How anybody could imagine that "Burgundy" is a similar shade to "Lavender" is a mystery known only to marketing people...)
I had no idea how elegant these cars were. Even the delicate details of the interior seating, how the chrome was applied, was out of this world.
My dad had this car in baby blue, but it was a super88 I was 8 years old at the time,I remember it well, it had power windows I Knowwwwwww🇵🇹🇺🇸👍
visibility forever. love that color too.
Thanks Charles for the remarkable classic car videos 👍🇺🇸😎❗
Glad u r enjoying what I'm puttin out there !!! ...

Thank you !!! ... this is a new medium for me .... video that is ... been into the cars my whole life !!! ...
You're right, TC. Charles has an enthusiasm for this era that other fine video makers aren't able to convey.

Another mouth-watering, spell-binding episode. Thank you guys! Like we didn't see the '61 Cadillac in the carport? Next episode. Spectacular home!
Being born in 62, my first memory of a car was my folks’ 1960 Olds Dynamic 88, very much like this car. Miss that car
A beautiful dreamboat in minty green. 😍

I think I’d be pulling up in that spaceship after an evening of cocktails

You've got GREAT taste !!!
I m not sure what I love more the house or the car!
Same!
Thanks for this, Charles! I have a ‘59 silver mist poly convertible Dynamic 88. Great car.
OK, how many folks ran downstairs to answer the door at 3:11? :D
Those rear windows must be awfully expensive to replace. "Unobtainium," as the say. But very very cool. Glad to see the car's in such great shape for an original.
Great car and video, I could listen to his voice all day......I Knowwwww

And Minty fresh.
I'd sure like to see one of these on the road again!
Omg what a beauty! and the owner isn't to shabby either 👍
The house is very cool too, we gotta twofer this time, did you see the Fab lawn?

Even the subtle but effective book plug. 😀

Thank you !!! ...
Right?!
Great car!
The Googie house is pretty cool too.
The wraparound rear window reminds me of the 76 Toronado window

We had a 59 Dynamic 88 wagon back in the day
This IS your father’s Oldsmobile! And it’s better than the one you just bought.
I always have like those '59-'60 GM 4 door flattops. In 1984, I owned a 1960 Cadillac 4 door flattop, which looked decent, but did not run very well.

U are totally right ... and I'm a BIG fan of 58 Edsels and Mercs
61 Caddy in the garage.
Dad bought this model off of the showroom floor. White with green interior.
The Patio ruf ! I know!
