HI EDDIE, another excellent informative video. THANK YOU. 🧐
So nice of you! Thank you!
Dear Eddy, thank you for creating this video - and so good you corrected for the initial mistake. I own an insulation test meter as well, and I use several isolation transformers. When evaluating those isolation transformers, the most important parameter is the leakage between primary and secondary windings, I guess. Using my isolation tester I short the primary (in your situation X1-X2) and connect one probe of the isolation test meter. Also, I short the secondary winding (H1-H2) and attach the other probe. Mind you, with an isolation test device one only tests with DC, so this yields some information on how good the isolation transformer is. The other variable, of course, and as you correctly mentioned, is the capacitance between primary and secondary windings - one should be able to actually measure the AC-current leaking between primary and secondary winding. How to setup such a measurement so it would yield valid results - I do not know, yet. Greetings from Amsterdam, NL, Peter.
Thanks Peter! Nice to hear from our friends in Amsterdam ;) AC hipot is done much the same way but the leakeage current limit is set Agency testing allows DC or AC hipot testing. The voltage level for DC is the peak of the AC.
I've never used an insulation test meter, I can see how one could greatly benefit certain electrical test. Glad you retested the device and found no shorts, after rewiring, that transformer will be a nice piece for the lab. Thanks Eddie.
Great point! They are nice and more affordable today. Thank you!
Scored my Southwire meter today and it is killer, might order more for the family. Rubbed a little oil on the rubber and looks new, I like it better than my Bryman, better fit in the hand. Thanks again.
That's great! Thanks for the feedback! Amazing meter;)
Thanks for the video Eddie. I’m really enjoying your tutorials about isolation transformers.
Glad you like them! I appreciate you!
Yes rebuild the thing with the proper 'Insulation Grommets' if I am not mistaken.
Yes - thank you!
Lol, like always great video loved the go pro cam. So if the insulation meter was incorrectly connected, why does the meter ui show lines connection to com.? It just looks too easy to be messed up, lol
I agree - one terminal is obvious - but the other is a bit hidden. Thanks!
Dont worry about connecting the isolation meter wrong. I also have one that I use very seldom. Every time I use it, I have to re-read the manual. F you don’t use tools so often, one tends to forget how to use them. That is part of life, I guess. As to the wrong wiring at the input, maybe they used that side of the transformer as the output? Shouldnt make a difference for an isolation transformer, and they could also have used it as a 110 to 220V config, or vice versa.
Thanks for the great feedback!
Great video Eddie. By the way, I saw your video about the matrix MPS-3005-H3 . Will you do a video testing it with an oscilloscope and such? Thanks in advance.
Yes - I'll do that this weekend;) Thanks for reminding me.
@@KissAnalog Thank you for your efforts!!!
Hello Eddie.. very good stuff, I wonder did you ever adress switch mode noise? I know you're very knowledgeable in that field, and it would be a nice tutorial, perhaps discussing/testing add on filters to existing smps, it's a big deal to me right now because I just bought 4 Cosel smps for a class a amplifier, and as a true DIY, things can always get better, cosel spec max 100mv peak to peak noise at full load.
Thanks for reminding me. I bought some parts for this video - so now I just have to do it;) I'll see if I can do it very soon;) What is the voltage output on the Cosel SMPS?
You may as well explain CTE/balanced config while you are at it and if it has any benefits for audio.
Thanks! I'll have to do that. I did go over that design awhile back - but I should put a new spin on it;)
Soooo...is the Extech sending 1000v pulses, and measuring for leakage?
Great question! I think it is steady 1000V, and I think it is measuring for current to give the insulation resistance.
I was looking at getting the Klein ET600 Insulation tester. Anyone have experience with Klein tool vs more expensive Extech or Fluke. I had a thought and was wondering if you could use those insulation testers to test breakdown reverse voltage of rectifiers or even testing MOV breakdown voltages since they only allow 1 milliamp of current to flow when breakdown occurs. THOUGHTS???
I think the Klein looks great! Price is nice too;) amzn.to/4dMhs5m
I think you could use them to test the MOV. I'll have to try that in a video;) I'll explain the MOV breakdown and ratings too;)
@@KissAnalog I would love to see that testing. You could probably test strike voltage of neon bulbs, TVS breakdown, etc. Anything with high voltage break overs. If I understand how the meter works it shows the maximum voltage being tested at and the break down voltage point.
Do isolation transformers get hot sitting there powered with no load on them. I acquired two 750 V.A. iso trannys and they draw like 8 watts each on my kilowatt powered with no load on them. Is that normal? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I wish I had an insulation tester. My DMM does not snow any shorts anywhere in the trannys up to 40 megaohms of range.
Yes that is normal. But 8 Watts is not very much power wasted on a big device like the transformer. So, it should only be warm;) Thanks for asking!
@@KissAnalog They got pretty hot. I will have to run a formal test and log everything as in the timing and temperature changes and ambient temps over time.
There is 'A' missing in the title word "Isoltion"
There was a breakdown between the "L" and the "T".
@Graham_Wideman LOL ;)
Thank you!!! I corrected that ;)
