I give it a 9.9. One of my favorite songs of all time. It still puts a lump in my throat and gives me a strong emotional reaction after all these years.
This sound is about a bird that flew into Chris's sliding glass door and broke its neck. He battled with himself about putting it out of its misery. Profound metaphor, though most believe it's about a person
@@jonathandufern7421 one of the MOST influential guitarists of his time, I can easily count the bands that were inspired off his sound OR straight up stole it, yet he is RARELY mentioned amongst the best out there, and imo he surely is!
I wouldn't say he's underrated. He always seems to be rated very highly, and rightly so. I agree though, that he has his own unique sound, more so than most guitarists. He's a class act.
I love Chris's low voice. It's rich and full of natural resonance. The dynamic of his lows and highs, and how well Christ does both, is what made him an amazing singer.
This is the Sgt Peppers of the 90’s. Probably the most important album of the decade. Picked it up in March of ‘94 when I was 14. My life was never the same. It was dark, moody, weird. I still remember the smell of the fucking ink in the CD booklet.

Matt Cameron paints with his drums, he doesn't just keep time. This is one of my fave Kim solos and per usual he isn't just showing off, he's just adding to the song. Coloring. Such a beautiful song.
This still threatens to have me crying even after 20-odd years & hundreds of listens. It's tremendous. The subdued-vocal first verse is essential structure-wise in setting the tone of the thing imho. Kim's lead work in this is super tasteful & less challenging to get into than in other songs- everything he does just immediately makes sense here, & Matt & Ben have a killer plodding groove which lets the vocals & guitar soar.... what's not to like?! ;)
Another one of my favorites of Soundgarden although makes me sadder than usual because of Chris obviously. Chris' voice is like honey or maple syrup at times and then I love the rasp at times too. His voice could do anything and make you feel so much. I also love his lyric writing.
Reason number 1 why grunge is great - there is no generic feel...at least not with the true grunge bands. Playing alternative rock during the 90’s does not make a band grunge.
Grunge and Alternative were not the same THOUGH many MAY be mistaken thinking so! Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mud Honey, Pearl Jam (early days) and those bands coming up together were Grunge (Nirvana was NOT Grunge BUT Punk and self proclaimed by all 3 members). Live, Candlestick and those types of bands ARE what Alternative is/was, NOT Grunge!
@@leekeeho543 Nirvana and Green River were more towards the punk side than metal and a MAJOR part of the Grunge/Seattle movement, so you make a perfect point
This song is a fine example of a band from top to bottom using "dynamics" and really evoking an emotion through it. This is one giant build, and masterfully done.
I may be bias, as this is my favorite Soundgarden song; but this is at least a 9.6 David. This song is the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 90s. A virtually perfect song
Matt Cameron behind the kit HELPED give Soundgarden their sound, all the members brought something to this band to make them Soundgarden and not just another band!
More Soundgarden! They used to call Kim Thayil's guitar work "Metaphysical Graffiti". He had 2 main tricks: barring the fretboard with his thumb while using his other 4 fingers and blowing on the strings. Lots of 3/4 & 7/8. Lots of Open C and weird tunings. "She Likes Surprises" is a great, quirky B-side. You're doing a great job. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 PS- This song is in Open G with the high E tuned down to C.
Wait.....open G? So his strings were tuned D, G, D, G, B....with the high E tuned down to C???? So he automatically gets the 7 from that.....that's WILD.
How did you never get into these guys back in the day? Between Soundgarden and Alice in Chains I know so many metal fans who where cross over fans of those two bands AND metal... Both have that metal roots background from the 80's coming up.
I know his power is in his upper register, but there is one song "Blind Dogs" that I think shows off his lower register very well. Love his singing in that (it goes high too, and it sounds great with both).
8:10 Chris Cornell was actually a baritone. He's not in his register when he sings in his signature style, he's really pushing mixed voice. This song is a perfect display of Cornell's vocal range and ability, he's not hitting his highest possible notes but you can see his voice switching on 3 different octaves, and maybe a little more
SUPERUNKNOWN is the greatest record of our generation - there is no other singer songwriter like Cornell - his voice is unmatched - Soundgarden diversity is also unmatched
My first drummer as a teen was a fantastic drummer, especially for his age. But as broke kids in a broken steel town he had two cymbals which he used for all colors depending where and how and where he hit them, so your cymbal lesson took me back.
Came back to this after checking out your "No Attention" reaction. This song is top 5 SG for me. The music and the lyrics come together to make what is, IMO, the definitive Soundgarden experience. Ethereal yet heavy and as deep as the Marianas trench. ...masterful.
Oh if you loved this song then you would love The Day I Tried to Live too. It has a similar vibe, but I would say that this song is not as dark. He does go low on the first half of the verse but then he does go high, 100%. I hope you'll enjoy this one too. Also the progression of this song is really weird. And the tuning is also weird, the drum work is fucking phenomenal. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/jwDlcx3HWAU/v-deo.html

If you do not sing lower and hold back then you never get the build up or contrast with the upper register and power. Meaning, I love when Chris wails. When he does not just makes when he does even better. IMO. In 94 Chris was moving into his more mature voice. Gone was the nothing to say voice. Gone was the loud love voice. Even gone was the outshined voice. The voice we got on superunknown, down on the upside and Euphoria Morning was a voice where Chris held back more and really had great control. His vibrato was well used at will up and down his register. He still had the range but it seemed he had to pinch a bit more to get it. His distortion was slightly different up high. It sounded great and its a debate where most people think totd/bmf or SU/dotu/em is his peak voice. My point to all this is Chris seemed to understand his mortality and wanted to write songs knowing he would be singing them in 20 years.
Great review! Can you review 4th of July from Soundgarden? Great song from the same album Superunknown.
