- Microsoft recently announced that is increasing the subscription prices for all tiers of Game Pass, and that it is discontinuing the current base Xbox Game Pass console tier.
That is going to be replaced in the coming months with the new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier, which, crucially, will not include access to day one releases. The price increase in and of itself is perhaps not entirely surprising, even if it obviously stings.
With the removal of day one releases from all console Game Pass tiers except the costliest one - which will now cost $20 per month - Microsoft has once again fallen into what was an easily avoidable pit, and in the process muddied the messaging. What sort of damage will that do to Game Pass, if any?
The gaming industry is such dog shit right now. Greed is killing any good it has left.

Sony raised their PSN up to 35% last year with no added content because PS5 has no 1st party exclusives. But you say Xbox has no games for the last two years. Honestly they arnt really going to get away with this. The math just doesn't add up. It makes more sense just to buy the games you want straite up. Since not all the games you want will be on gamepass. You might as well pick and choose abd then just stop at the price that game pass would have been.

I would think this goes without saying but here we are. Typically when more people invest into a product it drives costs down. When the product loses revenue, the company offers reasons to continue to buy the product, if the the numbers continue to dwindle, the price of the product goes up to cover the cost.

Rising price for core from 60 to 75 made no sense not only do you not have access to the whole game pass library you don’t even get any games day one and the discounts on games are hit or miss if it wasn’t for the online paywall no body would have bothered with it at all
imo xbox crapped its pants when it decided to make the series s. now developers have to worry about optimizing games for 2 systems. games don't look as good as it could considering it is powerful than the ps5. ps5 developers only have to make games for one system.

For the amount of games I normally purchase per year it is still better than buying games. But I have almost completely stopped playing on my Series X and almost exclusively play on my PS5 now.
No reason to play the Xbox when you can play those same games on pc and eventually ps5

Same here. I had a PS5 before getting an Xbox and while I enjoyed the Xbox for month or so, it became quickly obvious that the games catalogue is atrocious. I do like the quick play features and the easy to use UI, but that's about it. Not sure why it's so difficult to for Microsoft to put out some hard hitting first party titles. I'm probably going to cut my Xbox subscription at this point and just go back full time to the PS5.

Still save me more money than not having it. I play a huge amount of games and game types. The price would have to be $40 or higher a month to make me lose more than I gain. It’s not for your gamer that plays one game too much.

I disagree that they can get away with that.Their new games are not that good, and many people are already been on gamepads for more than a year and have played all they wanted. I was on it for 2 years, but only because I've bought xbox series x as a bundle with gamepas, it was a good deal.
But as soon as my two-year pass expired, I canceled the subscription. It was just not enough for me.

The problem for new Xbox customers. Buying a console is tiered and not clear. Buying Gamepass is then another tier, also not clear what you get, then for every major game there are potentially multiple tiers of payment.

gamepass was never worth it, renting is never worth it unless you really have no plan of ever using it again and it's far cheaper to rent it, if you do want to play again then just buy the game otherwise at the end of a year, 2 years you would have paid that game 10x or more lol, renting is like paying for a loan that makes you own nothing.
Playstation Plus Extra and Premium or Gamepass are good to try games you would never buy. Or games that came and that you just forgot. But if you really wanna play new games. Buy them. I don't even have the time to play the Games on Ps Plus or Gamepass anymore. A subscriptions isn't worth it. And I'm sure many think like that. Thats why the Gamepass is not really growing. If there are weak months and you don't know what to play and the weather is crap or everyone is on a Vacation except you. Get a Subscription. But a Full time Subscription is just not worth it

the way i use gamepass. if a game releases on it an i want to play that that i'll sub for a month. play it and cancel when im done. its not a service i would just stay subbed to. thats $20 plus tax would be around $256.00 a year just because you have access to all of those games doesn't mean you will end up playing them or even enjoy them. gamers rarely do go from game to game. most tend to stick to a handful

Now I have to watch adverts and pay for premium delivery, UA-cam premium, but if I stream to my telly I get adverts, it's a horrible slippery slope and an awful business model only allowed because... I knew this wasn’t going to work. The film industry went all in on streaming because of the pandemic. After over a fiscal year when the numbers came in they have been backing away from the day one subscription model big time. The model is worse for video games since film/TV you can go through whole seasons and multiple movies in under a week. On average people fully play through 1-2 games a month. What good is a catalogue of over 1,000 if you only use so little a month.
Nobody in life has been in favor of price increases as a consumer, yet it inevitably happens in every industry. If they keep putting quality content on the device the I can deal with it up to a point, but people have their limits
They have not put quality content on GP.
GP is scam made up of old an trash games, which you could buy all that you want for a fraction of a price and sill had money left for one or two NEW AAA games that come out.

@@AnimaTriste as someone who has primarily been in the PlayStation ecosystem since ps2, I think the content on there has been a fantastic value. I’d say 70 of the stuff one there is stuff I don’t own on other platforms and even if they are older games they are new to me and still relevant. And even if you can get a lot of those games cheap on sale if I even bought a quarter of the games I’d spend more than I spend annually(right now) on gamepass. And it won’t be a ton of games just sitting in a backlog I’ll likely never get around to which would be money wasted. If I get a hankering to try a game out on gamepass I don’t feel like it’s as much of an investment fiscally and if I don’t like a game I try on there is not just a waste. And if a game is good enough for me to spend a ton of time with it, by the time it is about to come off the service it will be cheap enough to were it will seem worth it to buy for the time I’ve invested and to no loose my progress. And the cloud saving if you ever decide to buy it even later is a big plus.
They’ve offered some premium games as day one releases as well. So I think it’s been great so far, but again there is a limit to how much you can stretch that.

The fact they are ending Game Pass for consoles only tells me that there won't be another generation of consoles. Forget what they said before, we can't trust what they say anyway because it seems to change on the fly. Even though they told they would carry on making consoles, doesn't mean plans haven't changed and this decision of ending Game Pass for consoles only but keeping it for PCs only just gives it away for me.
I have a good pc and I play most things that aren’t PS or Switch exclusive on it. So much easier and it’s pretty easy to get a decent gaming pc now.
@@joshualankford2966 Exactly. And to be honest PS exclusives are coming to PC as well. Ghost of Tsushima, the Uncharted series, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Horizon, Final Fantasy 7: Remake, FF16 and God of War are all on PC now.

I had gamepass this year in February and right now in July. I may keep it for August before the price hike comes in September. They are taking away the $10.99 subscription which is what I am using. After August I am not subscribing to this, this shit cost to much, and it’s not worth it.
As a consumer.. my only hope is if this improves the quality of gamepass games
Just finished a free month of GP that came with a monitor I bought, and my take is, it works as a try-out platform, since most studios don't make demos anymore. But had I paid for it, I would not have been satisfied with my purchase. I got a free playthrough of the Halo Infinite campaign, which I hadn't played through before, and discovered a few really good indie puzzle games, but was underwhelmed by the rest.
Xbox could at least give us access to all of the missing previous generation titles WITH ONLINE BEING AVAILABLE there are so many good games that still stand up we should have had access to from the beginning. On a side note does anyone think we will ever get emulation or steam access for pc games that are not too demanding?
All you have to do is think whether that brings Xbox any money. There is no way for Xbox to make money off by allowing Steam on Xbox. It's like a trojan horse that you yourself let come in which then cannibalises their own store on their own machine. It doesn't make any sense.

how do we justify paying less for games now then in the 80s when games cost millions to make . We all want to save and we should save on old games and remakes should cost 30-40 but games should cost more . Microsoft and Xbox are deliberately killing their console in a concerted effort to make gaming an "Application Experience" with subscription as the standard model for access to that experience.
This isn't going to end well. They were able tonget the FTC off their back by agreeing to not lay off any employees and not raising the price of game pass. And they've broken both of those agreements. Which means they're both desperate and stupid. Desperate to appease the shareholders, stupid because they could have walked away from this purchase if they thought long term.
Strange how he mentions their priority is the long term outlook of Xbox....instead of saying their priority is the consumer. If you take care of the consumer with games and features they want to actually play, that in itself secures the outlook of the Xbox. Each day and conference that passes by, the more I'm ditching Xbox for Sony. Microsoft did this to themselves with the incredible amount of people switching to the PlayStation.
Also Xbox needs to fire their marketing team. During their direct they unveiled two new Xbox consoles,…. Then a couple weeks later they put out an ad the says, “YOU DON’T NEED AN XBOX TO PLAY XBOX.” DUmb as SHIT!!!!
I dropped game pass before this announcement. Haven't actually enjoyed many games since RDR2. So I'd rather actually own a physical catalogue of older titles.
I had Game Pass Ultimate built into my purchase of my Series X over 2 years plus various short extensions here and there.. Once these ended I wasn't planning to renew. In return for extending my broadband contract for 2 years, my provider gave me an offer to more than double my speed for just £3 extra per month plus 12 months of Game Pass Ultimate included. Felt like a steal last month when I renewed. Definitely now with this latest news.
I think MS is doing this at the right time but under the COMPLETELY wrong assumptions. It's the right time because there are a litany of high profile, seemingly high quality 1st party games that will cause ALOT of buzz dropping in 2025. Hopefully if MS is thinking it can get away with charging $20/mo their 1st/2nd party offerings will be coming in at least a quarterly cadence AND are all complete, enjoyable experiences on Day 1. MS is assuming however that gamers will just HAVE TO play these games as soon as they come out. They don't realize that if you own all 3 systems, or have say just an xb since the mid 2010s, u've likely amassed a crap ton of backlog content that you really like but just have not had the time to play at all. I suspect GPUlt will see alot of subscriber churn as customers drop their coverage when there is nothing they are actively playing on the service and restart it when things they want to play arrive. Also, depending on the time investment the game requires, a $20 monthly subscription charge may be more affiable than paying either $70 msrp, or more simply waiting for the game to go on sale. The latter is likely to cause a stern, hard kick in the teeth as it pertains to 3rd party games because digital software typically is cheaper on PS than Xbox. I can also see MS doing this to address the critism that Gamepass cuts into a game's actual sales too. Take Fantazio* for example. Given this is a game made from the creators of Persona 3,4,&5 one can assume it will be a VERY long game and probably require a 100hr+ commitment. Your avg working adult (w kids) would probably need 3-4 months to beat it, if not longer. I'm not going to maintain a GPUlt subscription just to play that, given the time commitment is likely to make me spend at least $80-$100. It's also likely that I'll be playing something else at that time, so unless I'm super pressed to see what the team at Atlus cooked up, realistically I could wait a few months and catch the game on sale.

If it ever hits 30 a month I’m quitting Gamepass. I solidly only play like 2 or 3 games on it. Due to there’s some stuff on it. I’m mainly playing it because of the cloud versus downloading them. They just be adding games I don’t care to play on it.

I can only speak for myself, but I have started reverting back to physical media. I have picked up some old consoles and a tonne of old games. I've cancelled game pass and only continue to pay PS Plus because of the classic titles being added with trophy support and seemingly staying on the service permanently.
Microsoft want to move from a good strategy that was badly executed, to a bad strategy that is badly executed.

Having multiple tiers is another example of Xbox’s poor management. It would have been better just to raise the monthly fee to $20 a month as a single entry subscription point. Also, to this they could have added incentives to entice new and current subscribers.
Can you still use CD Keys one month subscriptions?

I just use the service once a year, play all the new releases, and then cancel. I also always get the £1 deal, so £1 per year is a great deal.
As someone who isn't in the loop and doesn't know much about this I would imagine people would be happy with gamepass? You pay a fee and you get access to rent 100s of games on the service. Again I don't know the product well enough so I'm just asking questions.
Don't let the discourse here fool you. There are millions and millions of people happy with their subscription services. Those people don't post here because to them nothing is wrong. Those posting are unhappy, but they aren't everybody.
I am happy with it on PC as indiviual AAA titles go up to 120 dollars noawadays and localized pricing is almost gone where I live, but over the course of a year Xbox Game Pass, at least where I live, has gone up in price 4 times, almost everytime it doubled, it's still a decent deal since I use it to play Minecraft, Fallout, EA titles, COD coming soon etc but it's starting to lose its value
I"m happy with it and still consider it worth it..cheaper then most other expenses in my experience

..I subscribe to Disney+, HBO (MAX), Netflix, Allente (Fiber TV) $55, Bahnhof (Fiber $55) and 4 Game Pass = 2 Game Pass (home Xbox split with another console).
Morgage + interest for the Villa..
Car (Volvo V90) is cashed...
And we still have money left every month and I save about $800/month in accoubts we never access..

Interestingly, Sony has also increased its service prices, yet there's been little uproar about it. Why is it acceptable for Sony to raise prices without criticism, but when Microsoft does, it's a huge controversy? It's important to recognize that these multibillion-dollar companies prioritize profit. Phil Spencer has openly stated that their goal is to make money, so price increases shouldn't come as a surprise.
Sony increased their prices last year in 2023. There was outrage over it lol. Nobody likes price increases. I just think 240 dollars per year which is the equivalent of buying 4 triple a games these days is a lot of money for a single subscription service. Especially when you think about it on top of all the other sub services many most likely have. Half your bills are sub services these days. I'd rather just wait for a sale and buy whatever game outright myself.
Sony has a better service than Microsoft with better games, not to mention I really haven't been interested in any of the first party or even third party console exclusives recently from Microsoft. The Xbox is dying, and Microsoft is trying to cash out while they can that is not happening with PS5.

Sony was making video games for nearly a decade before Microsoft ever decided to try to get into the console market. Even if the Xbox fails, developers will still be making games for Playstation and Nintendo. To consider one console so far above the others that if it fails that it would end, the video games market is folly.
In a few years I hope people are going to realise. "Oh yeah, I forgot we are dealing with Microsoft".
