You sir did a fabulous job putting this project together. One of the hardest things to do sometimes is taking your time and completing the project to your best ability when you just want to get it together and use it. However you took your time obviously and It came out great.
I plan to try and build one this summer using a old Arctic Cat Jag 3000 . Don't suppose you would any hints on what to look out for . Just waiting for spring to get here in Manitoba
I can get one locally. I been brainstorming how to outfit a sled to transport my friend whos handicapped ( a gimper) without too much unstableness which would be disasterouse and painfull. but I could use a means of hauling him rather than trying to traverse a wheelchair guy over ruts, ice crust and general winter terrain. And still haul the 2 shelters and all the gear. Looking for Ideas.
Awesome Video! Thanks for the inspiration. Just saw a SnowDog video, but I just can't part with $3k. I love to tinker, so this was right up my alley. I have a junk Yamaha Ovation that will work perfect for this!
Hey Nick... I think this thing looks amazing. I noticed you are from Winnipeg or at least Manitoba as am I. I would like to commission you to build me one if you are interested. Please let me know if you are interested and what you think it would cost. I can supply you all of my contact info if you reply to me.
I've just bought a donor sled and new engine to start building a similar project. What size sprockets did you end up using and what's your top speed? Thanks!
I built almost the same thing i used an 8hp briggs from a snow blower with the 110v electric start and swaped the starter to 12v....if you buy new i would get the winter motor
Super cool ! Im thinking of making one myself, but i will keep the suspension I believe it will make it less bouncy and more contolable when loaded. Great work.
Very, very, awesome, Nic! Cool build! The old snowmobile must have had a 20 inch track then? You should do a follow up vid showing after impressions about what worked well and what you would change if you were to do it over again.
Great job! I am watching this video because I am building one also. I found a dead snowmobile I had planned to use, but now I'm told two tracks are better than just one. Also the sled runners inside the tracks limit it to snow use only. Two tracks with basically wheel barrel wheels inside can be used in the summer too. What size engine did you use? I bought one through Northern Tools 420cc. This video was back in January, did you find any problems or anything you would change? How do you like it now that you have used it more?
Was/am considering building either an entirely new maybe 1” steel tube frame to carry the track components, and one concern is incorporating a boxed in storage area top of the track, pails, auger, maybe a 3 man flip over hut, whatever extra weight is over top that track in my mind will make for tougher steering but should give better traction rather then having no weight over track. Now see if I was still your age it would be loaded down with beer and likely some whiskey too haha.
Did you have to add a keyway to the jackshaft for the final drive gear? Looks about a 12T gear? I am just beginning my conversion from an 89 ski doo mx with a lifan 6.5hp motor, a cvt clutch kit, I just haven't picked a drive gear yet
OMG'sh! 😂😅😂 I love fishing but that looks like too much fun! Not sure if I would get any fishing done with that cool toy around. 😂😅😂👍🎉🎊🎉 Now ya just need a long rope a snow sled and drag them behind across the frozen lake. 😂😂😂
I liked and subbed I picked up 4 Polaris 500 indys...long and wide tracks and I was thinking of making a side by side track (dual tracks one motor driven thru a differential and keep the gear box ...hi...low and reverse....and sit in the middle...doesn't need to be fast....a some how let them FLOAT off some pivot not rigid.... great build......
Nice build nic. Did you end up playing with the final drive sprocket size ? Like start with a 10 tooth and work your way up ? Would be awesome to incorporate a low/high and reverse transmission of some kind, maybe off a lawn tractor, some red nic engineering !! More vids please. There are a lot of people out there that are interested in building something that is economical, reliable and fairly cheap to build . For myself I would like to build one for dragging logs out of the Bush, nothing fast just a lot of torque.
I'm so glad I finally found a video of one of these actually being driven and put through the paces! Definitely building one now! Great job with making the video
What primary and secondary clutches were used? Were they princess auto or ordered from CV Tech? What tooth sprockets were used for the exposed chain drive. From Northern MB and hoping to build something like this with a high school motors class. Thanks for the info.
Hey Nic, when she was struggling up that hill a lil in the video was it power related or weight related? Awesome build..... looking for my donor sled now!!
Very interesting build. Without a ski does it get enough lift for deep powder snow ? I'm not interested in great speed but where I live we get VERY deep snow. Atb
Great way to get out on the lake ice fishing a little easier than walking. I wonder what the “law” will say about insurance, licensing and lighting requirements?
Hi RedNic, I tried messaging you via Google. I'm trying to get a hold of you as I'm a TV producer for a television car show here in the US. Could you message me the best way to get a hold of you? Thank you, Jackie
Gets me into most areas for the day without refill. Though I usually bring a little extra fuel in a small tank. Like camp lake etc. If you end up playing around lots, then you would want the extra
Got a 2 cylinder diesel was pondering the idea of riggin a track with the diesel. Its an 8hp liquid cooled with alt and starter so a little bit of weight lol or i have the exact motor you have. What would you do? Would you make any changes/improvments to your build
I've been looking for someone who had built their own tracksled for so long. I'm glad I finally found this video. Nice work man.
Did you build one?
Actually looks like it goes pretty good. It's perfect for what you're doing with it.
That thing is SICK Nic!!!!!
You sir did a fabulous job putting this project together. One of the hardest things to do sometimes is taking your time and completing the project to your best ability when you just want to get it together and use it. However you took your time obviously and It came out great.
I think I have watched your video 10 thousand times awesome job
Repurposed a dead sled ! A must do for me ! Thanks for sharing
I plan to try and build one this summer using a old Arctic Cat Jag 3000 . Don't suppose you would any hints on what to look out for . Just waiting for spring to get here in Manitoba
The only issue I've had so far is that the handle bars were a bit weak/bend easy. I would find some stronger tubing for the next time
What size torque converter and can I put a 10 HP engine on it???
just v8 swap it lol
I can get one locally. I been brainstorming how to outfit a sled to transport my friend whos handicapped ( a gimper) without too much unstableness which would be disasterouse and painfull. but I could use a means of hauling him rather than trying to traverse a wheelchair guy over ruts, ice crust and general winter terrain. And still haul the 2 shelters and all the gear. Looking for Ideas.
Great video 👍 thanks for showing the details of removing parts of the suspension and making it solid. I'm going to be building one or maybe two.
Nice 😀
How are your screw drive atv project going ?
Awesome Video! Thanks for the inspiration. Just saw a SnowDog video, but I just can't part with $3k. I love to tinker, so this was right up my alley. I have a junk Yamaha Ovation that will work perfect for this!

Hello is that a princess auto motor?? Did you buy a winter motor or regular motor??
I built almost the same thing i used an 8hp briggs from a snow blower with the 110v electric start and swaped the starter to 12v....if you buy new i would get the winter motor
Awesome!! Well there goes my next few weekends... always love your videos!
Great work for a fellow Manitoban, I was planned to make one, any words of wisdom
Beautiful machine and also useful ! Congratulations ! ! Cheers from Canada, Polar Bear country .
We used it when moose hunting could haul a huge load
Sweet. Looks like you had a productive day of fishin' :) :)
id say yours is better than snowdog
Super cool ! Im thinking of making one myself, but i will keep the suspension I believe it will make it less bouncy and more contolable when loaded. Great work.
Yup, I know my next project lol was the 6.5HP big enough when it's all weighted down with gear or did it get bogged down a bit?
Awesome, the paint job definitely gave it an extra horsepower, good job
Too bad a Sportfire. A Trailfire wouldn't bother me so much, but Sports are hard to come by. Great job though!
I still have one there are a few around
154" track and 2" paddles thing would be unstoppable
Very, very, awesome, Nic! Cool build! The old snowmobile must have had a 20 inch track then? You should do a follow up vid showing after impressions about what worked well and what you would change if you were to do it over again.
Probably 15 inch
The only problem is, is getting into any tight turns, you'll never be able to turn it that sharp.
Great job! I am watching this video because I am building one also. I found a dead snowmobile I had planned to use, but now I'm told two tracks are better than just one. Don't forget about the chicks ! But At my age I go to get away from the wife and kids !
AMAZING!
how much would you charge me for you to build me one i have all the parts
Dude! That thing is BOSS! Now I want one. Nice work.
What clutch did you use and where'd you get it?
And did you have to machine any of the clutch parts?
+Adam Wilson comet clutch from princess auto. No machining
What series of Comet Clutch did you buy at Princess Auto ? 30 series, 40 series ?
That moves fast enuff standing behind it
comet 40 clutch???? or what model?
Thats what they use and sell in Russia
They made a snowmobile called the husky just like that in the 1960.
Very cool build! Have you figured out top speed?...(i know its not going to win any races. Just wondering what it can do, to get across the lake)
i'll clock it soon and put it in a video for ya
@@REDNIC79 What size sprocket is on that jackshaft bud?
That is cool as hell. Looks very handy for outdoors activities. From the camera view it looked like it had some get up an go! Well done.
nice job!
Did you have to add a keyway to the jackshaft for the final drive gear? Looks about a 12T gear? I am just beginning my conversion from an 89 ski doo mx with a lifan 6.5hp motor, a cvt clutch kit, I just haven't picked a drive gear yet
Lots of torque for climbing and carrying and Easily transported...Looks like a PA motor lol...Good job
OMG'sh! 😂😅😂 I love fishing but that looks like too much fun! Not sure if I would get any fishing done with that cool toy around. 😂😅😂👍🎉🎊🎉 Now ya just need a long rope a snow sled and drag them behind across the frozen lake. 😂😂😂

hah i was WONDERING if you could steer it lying down and sure enough, works fine. Probably cant see where you're going but heh otherwise no problem.
How much to make me one?
@REDNIC79 What gearing your comet clutch has ?
Amazing built.
Did you use the original mount position for the drive ?
It looks like it . That would sure make the project less difficult for sure .
The thing needs a kill switch on a lanyard like a jet ski so if you lose it then it will shut off and not run away.
After a 2nd viewing . It sounds like you used the original drive position.
Very cool !
I’m on it !!!!!!!
Nice! Nic put some old skis or a skid plate on the bottom of your tub. After that. Wax it :)
For your first go of it that it awesome. If you make any changes - please post update videos! Thanks
Have u achieved good weight distribution? No left or right leaning when u ride?
That is awesome. Great job. What is cool is you can move the track side to side on a hill.
I am going to build one. looking for donor snowmobile. What old snowmobile works best?
This looks like something my dad would do. Except that your's seems to work well for it's intended purpose.
Did you say that is a 6 horse? I suppose a good old stock engine would to fast. Pretty cool!
Totally Awesome !!! Buy a 2 Man Hut now .Then U Can Sit Down & Drive Plus Fish !
Smart.
What track length did you end up going with for this build?
that's a nifty idea, just need a seat in the sled.
Very interesting build. Without a ski does it get enough lift for deep powder snow ? I'm not interested in great speed but where I live we get VERY deep snow. Atb
Build a bracket to go from side to side on the sled and put a boat seat on it. I like it, nice build! What is top speed on it?
we need an update video, did the belt wear out fast, any problems etc...
WHERE can you get that nice sled that your pulling?!
Nicely done! Looks like it has plenty of giver!
How is it in deep snow? Is this better than a sled with a trailer, hunting, fishing?
looks nicer than the commercially available rigs.
Wayyy cool bro !!
Most excellent. You got my subscribe
What diameter sprocket is on the jackshaft?
How many tooth gear you put on the jack shaft?
Man that thing is sooooo awesome. It hauls ass I was expecting it to be way slower. Very impressive great build 😉👌
Love the front paint job. Sweet.
love it! my brother used to have one! I believe it was an original bolens hus-ski.
Okay, I've got 2 or 3 old dead sleds that'll make these. I want to keep one though.
I going to try making one out of an old Artic cat this summer .
OMG that is awsome! I want one! Still pretty fast for a 6.5 HP, just fast enough.
Great way to get out on the lake ice fishing a little easier than walking.
I wonder what the “law” will say about insurance, licensing and lighting requirements?
looks familiar, is this near calabogie?
Nice job bud. Great little work horse.
Friggin' awesome, bud. Lighter than an elan.
My kids would have a blast on that
Does it pull through slush and float
Did you have to shorten the track?
thats bad ass you should add a 670 v twin to it lol
WOW!!! That is Feekin' Cool!!! Nice work!!!
That is great inspiration for my next hybrid project. Thank you for sharing.
Hi RedNic, I tried messaging you via Google. I'm trying to get a hold of you as I'm a TV producer for a television car show here in the US. Could you message me the best way to get a hold of you? Thank you, Jackie
i replied via google MSG, thanks!
That's a great idea. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed this project. Joe
Where did you get the throttle and brake cables from? I'm working on a similar project at the moment. Great build and thank you for sharing!!
Off Amazon, tandem bike cables
@REDNIC79 nic what would you say the range is on the motor, for getting into the back lakes. im in winnipeg and just about to build on myself
Gets me into most areas for the day without refill. Though I usually bring a little extra fuel in a small tank. Like camp lake etc. If you end up playing around lots, then you would want the extra
Love the scale idea, looks like your having fun out there.
Got a 2 cylinder diesel was pondering the idea of riggin a track with the diesel. Its an 8hp liquid cooled with alt and starter so a little bit of weight lol or i have the exact motor you have. What would you do? Would you make any changes/improvments to your build
😮 how awesome would that be!
