I have a friend from college who hails from Osaka and is a huge Hanshin Tigers fan. Because of the lack of championship success of our respective baseball teams (I'm a Phillies fan), we bonded over baseball. He adopted the Phillies as his American team, while I adopted the Tigers as my Japanese team. When the Phillies won in 2008, he was thrilled, but I could tell that for him it wasn't quite the same as the thrill I had over victory. Fast forward to now, and his Tigers finally win the Japan Series. I messaged him my congratulations. A day later, he messaged me back and thanked me, then asked, "When the Phillies won, were you unable to sleep the night it happened and did it not matter the next day?" I told him yes, and he said, "The same thing happened to me! I finally felt what you felt 15 years ago! I hope I feel it again in my life!" Me too brother. Me too.
He is dressed as Colonel Sanders. The last time the Hanshin Tigers won the championship, in 1985, a statue of Colonel Sanders was thrown into the river from a nearby KFC store. Since then, Hanshin has not been able to win the championship, so it has been referred to as the "curse of Colonel Sanders."
