He is not born in Russia. He was born in Tampere in Finland - same town as Patrik Laine and played the same team "Tappara. His father "Sasha" Barkov was born in CCCP and he played also in Tappara.
To be fair he did get ranked as the 4th best player in the league, so maybe he is getting recognized now. However, he’d be talked about alot more if he played for bigger market.
I sat with two Russians at a Panthers game recently, I asked if there were any Russians on the team besides Bobrovsky. They said no. I asked if Barkov counts. They said he’s a Finn, doesn’t count. Barkov is a Finn.
Sasha plays for team Finland and before moving to FLA, he has lived and played his whole life in Finland. So as a hockey player, I consider him to be a Finn. Ethnically he is Russian. Nationality both Finnish and Russian. Barkov has stated earlier, that when he's home with parents, he's Russian, when he walks out the door he's a Finn.
Such a nice guy and honest. And in the ring his an absolute BEAST!

Whether recognized or not, Barkov is a top 5 player no matter what market he plays in.
He is my great son dad and he is a good hockey player
"If he played in a different market would he be a top 5 player?" Yeah because the market determines player skill..
Stupid comment what a loser
He is a top 5 player, but he doesn't get recognized as one, due to playing for a small market.
he ment he would be ranked top 5 in a different market...
