    I vividly remember watching this press conference coming home from school that day. I maybe in the minority, but I think the display of how angry Gary Bettman seemed here proved his feelings toward the game in its position were organic, not manufactured.

    Gary Bettman's attack on the Union itself hurt the ability to reach a new CBA before the 2005 season was to began. We've heard that same rhetoric from Commissioners like David Sterns and Roger Goodell. That is the problem with Professional Sports. Commissioners are only working for the owners, when they should be working for league and as a neutral. Commissioners should stop working for the owners and being hired by the owners. They should be elected by an equal voting system of owners and players, and have set term lengths with the possible of Re-Election.
    I watch this on Halloween 2021, as the MLB faces a possible Lockout going into 2022. Rob Manfred has made so many blunders in recent years, the players are angry. I fear a Lockout is likely, and the dangers of a shortened or cancelled 2022 season are possible. I hope not, I hope the MLB owners and the MLBPA will work in good faith, and for a a fair and balance new CBA gets ratified before payers report to Spring Training in February 2022.

      Not really. It's a business and business comes before everything else. The NHL isn't the NFL or MLB. Player salaries were rising faster then league revenues. The league was losing hundreds of millions of dollars and the players selfishly choose skyrocketing earnings over the future of the league. The salary cap and revenue sharing instituted after the 05 lockout secured the future of the league and made it a better league for the fans. Fans sided with the owners in 05. The NHLPA head was fired. The players absolutely got destroyed by Bettman. He drew a line in the sand and stood firm which ended up being a great move.

      @@jp783Yes. Really. Nearly 75% of the NHL's revenue was being spent on player salaries, that's way too much for any sports league. Don't forget the amount of Canadian teams and the Canadian dollar, that also contributes to the NHL's financial struggles back then. I'm not pro-owner but I don't blame them for playing hardball against the players here.

      @@spime93 I've never seen any proof of what you just claimed and I'm inclined not to believe it. The owners, and I can name specific people, now and then were known to be colluding and keeping multiple books for their secondary revenues re: $$$ that wouldn't exist without their franchises. It's bullshit... And greed. Period.

    • @spime93
      @spime93 10 місяців тому +6

      @@jp783 It's on Wikipedia. Also, you can't cry greed when the players were making 75% of the revenue of teams. Ideally it'd be split half-and-half, and better yet, a salary cap would be in place to prevent potential losses. This is why the lockout happened, this is why teams like Quebec moved to Colorado. The players made too much money and the owners (as cheap as they are) couldn't find financially viable ways to keep up with the expenses

    Gary is right on one thing, an athlete should not be gauged on his ability to be payed, but rather be gauged on his ability to play. Exactly what went wrong with the NFL with no ceiling on salary caps. They're plagued with people who made it to the top of their ranks, and never play the same since they've got the $ they've always dreamed of. Shame on Bettman for locking out, shame on the NFL for not realizing their own shortfalls. This is why the NHL plays a more genuine game, they're not playing for money, they want the cup.

    It's no surprise that the NHL is put on hold. Its very clear that Wayne Gretzky and the NHL don't want Alexander Ovechkin to beat Wayne's all time goal scoring record. He was on pace for another 55 goals this season and just needs 200 more goals to beat it. He'll be 35 at the beginning of 2020-2021 season.

    Ironically, the whole point of the lockout was to help smaller market teams, but all it did was benefit the Rangers and Los Angeles area teams disproportionally by forcing them to pay more for scouting. The rule changes out of the lockout saved the game, but those could have happened without cancelling a season

    Arizona Coyotes could be on the verge to move out of Arizona because the town that they're currently playing at failed to vote on a big project that could bring a ice hockey specific arena for them and they're currently playing at a arena that's home to a University.
    For team like the Coyotes they went through bankruptcies and ownership changes because of lack of interest for the city and the game
    This will be on Gary Bettman if the Coyotes do move out of Arizona since he's been trying to get fans South of the US to be interested in hockey but not everyone is interested in hockey
