I just saw your videos about getting OB-X style sounds from GForce OB-E today. I thought to myself … “Polydata is going to love OB-X!” 😂 Great work; beautiful patch programming.
I can't thank you guys enough for the niche sounds you guys put out. It is something I've been looking for for a long time and no one else has even come close. I think I own a soindbank from you guys for every synth I have except for Diva. Do yall have a Diva soundbank?
Thanks! Glad you're liking them :) Not a Diva bank through the Polydata store, but a Polydata Diva bank that Swan Audio commissioned, so you can buy it through their site exclusively. It's a Juno-style Diva bank.
Interesting sounds - do you use an analog compressor, cassette tapes or equalization with an equalizer at the output? Because in the original the OBX does not produce the same sound as in this demo version
Thanks! - everything you hear is just a direct recording of the plug-in. Some of the patches have a small amount of a small reverb on them (the plug-in's built in reverb) which will shape the timbre a bit, and the ability to have variable amounts of filter tracking between 0 and 100% can make a big difference. I owned a single voice from an OB-X, to my ears this plug-in sounds quite accurate in terms of it's raw sound.
@@polydata Richard Barbieri also used a Roland System 700, which I believe was used for the metallic sounds on Ghosts. However, as many of the sounds on Tin Drum used Cross Mod, or Poly Mod, either an OB or Prophet could be used to emulate them as there is not a great deal of difference between them in terms of basic architecture. It’s something that I haven’t seen attempted much in VST’s, though there are some patches for the OP-X Pro II.
@@polydata ha! yeah I'd have been happy to help, but don't really live nearby, so I guess that means I should get the vst and make it a fun project to see how close they are and if I can replicate 🤔☺️
I think this and the GForce OB-E/SEM are the best Oberheim plug-ins, and probably the most accurate poly plug-ins in general. But Obsession and the other ones also sound great. I don't want it to seem like those aren't good and now you have to buy this one, those ones also sound really nice and are used in professional recordings every day.
thanks for the reply. Do you know the differences in functionality in terms of inthe box software "additional" functionality? and if you, for example could get the same sounds out of an obsession as you have for this set? @@polydata
You can definitely get these types of patches from Obsession. Additional features for the OB-X plug-in are things like X-modifiers, pots for mixer levels and filter tracking rather than the buttons on the original synth. But I stuck pretty close to the original hardware functionality on this set, didn't really go so much into the extra features, because this sound bank is meant to be more "old school". It's possible I might do an Obsession set at some point, not sure though. @@BeridotSegas
IMO they are of the same caliber. that is to say, these aren't emulating at the circuit level, it's a bit looser. So it's down to being "close enough". The do ABx comparisons to approximate the behavior of their in-house unit. Long story short, if you have OB-E, OB-X and Obsession, you have basically the current cutting edge of Oberheim synth emulations. You can throw in bx_oberhausen as an honorable mention; it can sound great and super analog, but it's not as good (can't really configure the voices) and is a bit overpriced and ugly in some ways. Obsession is modelled after OB-Xa. This one models the older OB-X. There's another much older plugin called OP-X by sonicprojects (intended as an OB-X emulation) which is well-loved, but IMO it's slightly less accurate, and more of a ballpark synth that can also do Jupiter-8. But it can sound nice and has a good vibe to it. There's also a freeware one called OB-Xd (confusingly, author claims it targets OB-X not OB-Xa, not that it matters) that is also a ballpark synth, but I don't think it was ever intended to be super accurate, it just wanted to capture.
They are getting closer to hardware that's for sure. This is the best OB emulation I've heard. It has that vintage vibe.
I definitely agree 👍
Wow, I love it. This is the kind of video that makes me interested in synthesizers.
thanks!
Great sounds as ever! I've always been more into the SEM than the OB series, but I can't deny that both lines of instruments produce pleasant results.
Thanks! Yeah they're both great; the SEM definitely has more flexibility in a lot of ways.

haha, you were right :) thanks!
Ace patches. Ace softsynth too.
Thanks! I agree, it's outstanding. I think you'll particularly enjoy patch #16.
Why do all these sounds sound as if they're straight off the soundtrack of 70's educational television programs?
Mission accomplished!

These patches are wonderful. Nice work!
Thanks! I enjoyed making them and kept playing them because the plug-in sounds so good.
Would love an entire bank of Prince’ sounds circa for you album/ Prince/ Dirty mind/ controversy!!! ☔️☔️☔️☔️💕🎵😎
that would sure be epic! we'll see what the future holds
Please.. when you will get a chance. “ i wanna be your lover instrumental part”, soft & wet!!!
Woah, sounds incredible! Picking this one up!
Thanks! Yeah they did an amazing job with this plug-in
Dawn at LAX is fucking majestic
thanks :)
Best analog inspired vst since Diva.
Yup, it's really great :)
if they could just get the sound of the Curtis chips down then we'd have a damn near identical obXa

4:47 would love an entire bank of Japan sounds
Yeah! A lot of those patches are pretty awesome. Wouldn't really be possible for one synth though since they used both a prophet-5 and OB-X.

Great patches! Any plans to convert them for the OB-X8?
Thanks! Would love to do an X8 bank, would just need to find a way to get my hands on one :)
