Btw if you didn't K ow he did do an actual commentary on it years ago, all four original DTP records. They used to be up on UA-cam, I think they were released as a By A Thread bonus, they were awesome ones recorded when the quadrillogy was relatively new.
Deconstruction is the best album of all time. I'm so grateful to Devin that he made it. It's extraordinarily unique; absolutely nothing else is like it, even within Devin's catalogue. Just perfect from front to back.
Anyone else feel less alone when he shares how he thinks? Maybe he's just good at articulating the elusive, but there aren't many people in this life that I can say I relate to at a deep level, as weird or cringe as that sounds. I don't cry much, but when I listen to these podcasts, I finally feel understood... But then again, how much of that is because I chose to follow him? Anyway...
Dude... my depression "is gone". It has been away since March last year. My life is way better now. I got into university with good grades, my intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships are better, stress is minimal... and I point these podcasts as the reason for that. Crazy, I know... but, hearing his progress, his failures and successes... it resonated on me. Of course I'm still a batheled monkey with the imense size of the universe, with no clue of what this is all about, BUT, somehow, even though I'm alone and lost, I'm more connected with me and with all this caos, cause I know that all the other high evolved cerebellum chimps, even the ones that you look up to, are also confused and suffering. It's strange... but that's what I feel. Devin music has made me a better person, and I thank him for that. And these podcasts... pure gold.
You're not alone there, man. I find I can listen to any of these more than once and get something new each time. Plus the added excitement of hearing his progress on new music.
@@chapeudealuminio4866 so glad to hear you've gotten better through this. It is reassuring that we're all lost but with a sense of togetherness. I think we all need that reminder from time to time, even if it is cliche. Even though we don't know shit, at least we can be kind to each other through our confusion. I hope you are able to find continued peace despite the dark days. Is it possible to not sound cheesy or use metaphor? Whatever, all the best man. :)
I can totally relate to this. In fact, ever since I started discovering transcriptions of his interviews and now this podcast, I've felt compelled to try to do something similar to articulate my own thoughts, on my own time, and that kind of introspection is seriously helpful to make sense out of all the shit that goes through my head, and to kind of observe that to get information about it. It's okay not to have definitive answers, but there are several things you can come to terms with about yourself when you do it. I seriously admire Dev's vulnerability. It makes me feel less weak and more compassionate with myself, which is something I've owed to myself for the longest time. I hope I can continue being able to participate in Dev's introspection, as it's really helpful. And I'll continue listening to Guitar Improvisation 1 every time shit gets me. It's a light net which really helps to keep you on the ground amidst storms. At least that's what it does for me. ❤️
I remember hearing praise the lowered for the first time.. laying in bed in the dark, headphones on..just vibing with those layers upon layers of beautiful electronica... only to be decimated a few minutes later. I became a fan for life. Also, this video should be title (puzzle/ deconstruction) hahah. Not a bad thing.
Praise The Lowered was the first song of Devin’s I had heard since he did vocals with Steve Vai. Point ‘B’ was so different (and GREAT) from Point ‘A’ that it sent me on the full journey of listening to how Devin created (creates) that much musical progress. The stories of how he excavates his discoveries are as important to me as his music. Reading how you were hooked in that ‘Praise The Lowered’ moment, helped me re-live how I was in 2013, too. Thank you for writing that!!
For those wanting more detail on the concept and production of Deconstruction, you should definitely listen to the album commentary Devin did for it - he goes into a ton of detail and its super interesting. He retweeted a link to a mediafire page that has all the album commentaries back in February - should be able to find it without too much trouble.
My overall favorite album of all time is Deconstruction. I’m so excited to hear Devin’s story on this podcast. What a great prelude to his new project as well!
Deconstruction is the album that made me understand Devin Townsend to a much much deeper level. This record is brilliant in so many ways, probably his best among many best albums.
You should do guided meditation, your voice on these podcasts is so soothing. I thank you for them, as they are helping me look inwards as well. Thank you Devy, from the bottom of my soul-for all you do.
Thanks to Devin for doing these sessions. Hated to hear about Duris though. I have fond memories of the Ki era, as I was a first-time Dad and remember the uncharted waters Devin was treading as well. I clearly remember him talking before about his interaction with the group during the recording process. It reinforced to me that the creative process isn’t always smooth, yet those moments with new peers brings new things out that otherwise wouldn’t have come about. People talk about life in their 40s and focus on the combination of mental peak and physical decline. What nobody prepared me for was the beginnings of losing your childhood heroes. While Duris wasn’t in that category for me, he was still part of a chapter that meant a lot to me. Thoughts are with those who knew him better.
I started listening to all the podcast about 2 or 3 weeks ago (I didn't listened to them when they came out, for whatever reason) and it's been a journey listening to all this, now I'm impatiently waiting for the next one thank you so much for sharing all this, Devin!
Very interesting! If you go over the irritation that it takes a while until you "arrive" at Deconstruction, you will be rewarded pretty much. And the connection makes sense, if you follow Devins thoughts and tune into the space around them :)
Quarantine made thousands of people occupy their time buying jigsaw puzzles. Meanwhile, it made Dev create a musical one with unexpectedly-shaped pieces made by different people to solve it somehow! Glad to hear how the Puzzle/Snuggle project is coming together! I love Deconstruction's insane complexity and density. Fitting how there's a relationship between that album and the complex puzzle that's falling into pieces. ❤️
Devin: "Ghost, if you haven't heard it, is..." We've heard it, Dev. We're listening to a podcast about your entire musical output and hanging on every word. We've heard everything, my dude🤓
Love the podcast, still hungering for a little more info on the production and writing process for this one, details were a little sparse. Very interested to hear Puzzle and Snuggle
Check out the album commentary for Deconstruction - he goes super into detail on the lyrics and concepts behind the songs in a way he hasn't done on any of the podcasts or other commentaries. Devin retweeted a link to a mediafire page with all the commentaries back in February, definitely give it a listen
Awesome! I love this album. It was my first Devy album (what a part of the conversation to walk in on!). He's been my favourite artist ever since. I loved the Contain Us commentary on this album because there is so much going on. Can't wait to listen to all of this, especially 10 years after release

Lovely podcast as always. However it seems to have the wrong title. I got 3 quarters of the way through and realized I hadn't heard the word Deconstruction even once.
I cant not smile and giggle at the word Cheeseburger whenever I come across it in life. But alas Mighty Masturbator is my all time favorite. It hits me in the feels.
Devy working with a producer may be the most exciting news from this whole thing. It has done wonderful things, but in general I think not wanting to kill your darlings won't help the music. It's probably a longshot, but Devin working with Ross Robinson as a producer/recording engineer would be a musical dream come true.
To me, the brief description of Puzzle/Snuggles sounds a lot like a Devinized Tubular Bells or even Amarok (Mike Oldfield) utterly defying traditional structure for expressiveness....expecting a difficult, intense and challenging listening experience, to which I'm looking forward very very much.
If u wanna know more about Decon there is a good video about Dev telling about Mighty M in UA-cam. Also Contain Us and Only Half There books really tell about this album. Not to forget By A Threads Dvd commentary track :-) This podcast was just scratching the surface maybe... anyway. Nice to hear about Puzzle. Go dev!
Hi Dev - really interested for when Puzzle comes out! At the risk of projecting my own thoughts onto something I haven't heard yet, it feels like it's shaping up to be a response to the trajectory of the thoughts you've expressed in these podcasts, particularly with regard to individual and collective responsibility. The idea of using your individual creativity to wrangle all of these disparate pieces of collaboration from others in order to let them speak, but in response to an initial stimulus from you, is a really intriguing approach to the whole question of ego and musical control - is it your album? Is it theirs? Is it kind of both? Can't wait to hear this thing.
I'm going to be honest, it's not my favourite album. Despite the ingenuity, for me it's a tough, relentless listen (although it has many fun moments, hooks and genre forays). A physical copy was gifted to me by a good friend as an introduction to Devin, but of the 4 I much prefer Ghost, Ki and Addicted! Quite surprised to hear more about Puzzle than Deconstructed on this podcast! As always, appreciate the psychological insights - the metaphor of 'trying to drink the entire ocean instead of swimming in it' is a articulate gem that has me had me thinking over it for days (ironically since it's probably counter to the intention behind that piece of advice, of 'surrending to experience'). Cheers.
