The best plan I've heard for reparations is forgiving the national debts of effected countries. It's near impossible to compensate individuals. The money owed is money spent. It's not coming out of our taxes or treasury. It would help the governments who are in massive debt and the problems Britain has contributed towards in those countries since. It's the only plan I've heard of which covers all bases and doesn't hurt normal people.
There's a lot of private debt hidden in the paris accords I believe. We'll all be back in the same place in a couple decades be back in unless that is nulified I believe. But note that all this reparation talk is the result of trolls in their social media trying to drive them towards brics. Will they have to learn russian or chinese?
Clearly harsh injustices were committed by us against these nations. Equally clearly, tallying up the cumulative cost of that is highly subjective, and tends to end up at figures the UK simply will nor cannot pay (one academic has quoted in the trillions). Trying to pursue that is pointless, and anyway I think very few people would have faith that direct cash reparations payments wouldnt get siphoned off by corrupt officials. Forgiving what debts these countries owe to us wont take anything directly out of our national finances, and will leave their governments with more fiscal room in which to operate. Im not sure how large those debts are, possibly it would not be very significant. But particularly given various cases of continued commercial exploitation post-imperialism, it would be a gedture of goodwill without the open-ended potential to bankrupt us that cash reparations carry.
James O'Brien has lost his marbles...how on earth does he still have a radio show. So stale, like a broken record. We are not responsible for our ancestors Sins ... especially if we wasn't related to them in the first place. The British public wanted it this way. Remember that! My sympathy for the conned has long run out. Now my family and I have to put up with what the public voted for.
Hey James ,you expect immigrants from the Caribbean to pay reparations to the place they left? They’re British to too remember. You are losing the place….for some reason…..🤔🤔🤔
"I want reparations from Italy for the Roman invasion for sending my ancestors to die in the gold mines for 400 years and from France for the Norman invasion".
@gazevans1038 Learning means making things right. The first thing to do and maybe the meaningful thing to do is apologize. Without it or even refusing, it means you're likely to repeat or even not understand the transgressions in the first place.
I think we couldn't possibly afford it all as most of the wealth went to build stately homes but we do need to help boost the economies UK robbed by working with the countries rather than treating them like children.
With respect James, when Brexiters talked about the Commonwealth, they were referring to the parts of it that are economically significant. Small and highly corrupt Caribbean islands were not top of that list.
The mental gymnastics of James never ceases to amaze... as we have moved further and further towards this utopia of fairness that James and his like advocate, we are seeing more crime, more disharmony and an economy that fails more and more. Perhaps fair competition is what it should be about (not dividing the rewards to those who aren't effective or contributing)
We freed them and stopped the trade and finally finished paying the bill for that jn 2015. The British taxpayer has paid enough and we're still handing out money around the world.
When we banned slavery (and were the first to do it in a way that lasted) we spent a fortune hunting down slavers and trying to put a stop to the trade. With that in mind, if the commonwealth nations would like to pay us reparations for the cost incurred in doing so we would be most grateful. Besides, we already paid these nations their reparations. We paid for the slaves. That were sold to us. By the government. Of the nation. What, do they want us to pay twice? Seems a little messed up if you ask me.
@DavidCodyPeppers. and we never will. They all died 200 years ago. I propose we seek reparations from Italy for the Romans brutal conquest of the British Isles. Or bill France for Agincourt. How far back do we go? Answer: it has nothing to do with justice and everything to do with race baiting.

The government should set up a public reparations fund that people can choose to pay into if they want to. I had nothing to do with slavery 300 years ago, today or 1000 years ago, so I wouldn't be paying in a penny. If others feeling misplaced guilt want to pay into it then thats they're choice. If the Government pays reparations it'll mean every tax payer and their grandchildren are in debt through taxes through no fault of their own.

@@pipins3616 In a debate or conversation, when you say "no one agrees with you" instead of "I don't agree with you," you're engaging in argumentum ad populum, also known as an appeal to popularity or bandwagon fallacy. The difference between the two statements is: "No one agrees with you": This is an appeal to the consensus of others (whether true or not) to support your point. You're trying to undermine the other person's argument by suggesting their position is invalid simply because it lacks popular support. "I don't agree with you": This is a personal statement that directly expresses your own disagreement without invoking the opinions of others. The first can be considered a fallacy because just because something is widely believed doesn't mean it's correct. Conversely, expressing your personal disagreement is more valid and constructive in debate. 🕊
The slavery reparations issue will lead to the collapse of the Commonwealth, once you start down the road of seeking reparations for historic injustices where do you stop? In Canada our Aboriginal First Nations are in a cash grab of monumental proportions for every aspect of historic discrimination. Recently a $47.8 billion dollar settlement offer for historic injustice of the child welfare system treatment of First Nations children, which was negotiated with the government was then turned down by the Assembly of First Nations as not being enough. This was just one issue. Any compensation offered will never be enough.
But we DO live in this dystopia! The problem is, the people who suffer the most from our pyramid scheme, live and die far away in other countries, to produce the junk economy goods we are then encouraged to buy and guilted with into accepting the system we are not permitted to live without. The only reason we don't see the dystopian nature of our way of life, is it's not immediately visible to us.

Fool. Don't give them nothing.
@@limpethead That's a double negative, so you want us to give them something. Great, thanks!
Congratulations on the only thoughtful and nuanced comment under this video
I thought James pushed Kier because he was SO decent
Take it out of our reparations from the Italians and french
Don't let the Vikings off the hook!
And the Romans, we deserve every Denarii from the exploitation of our lands and people back!
Parts of North Africa owe a vast sum due to the naval mujahideen taking a million+ from Europe, many of those being from coastal Britain.
The Normans and their family decendences owe the north for 1068 onwards

We are not responsible for our ancestors Sins ... especially if we wasn't related to them in the first place. Slavery happened all over the World, we were slaves ourselves...let's focus on the Slavery that is happening now.

I usually refrain from comment on an individual’s behaviour to disagree with them. James makes this difficult.
So our country is on its knees economically as well as perhaps spiritually and people are finding ways to keep it there.
All. By. Design.
It's a shame but we will never learn. Divided we fall.

@vincentblack7467 your so ignorant. There is literally nothing to talk about with you.
I think we couldn't possibly afford it all as most of the wealth went to build stately homes but we do need to help boost the economies UK robbed by working with the countries rather than treating them like children.

as we have moved further and further towards this utopia of fairness that James and his like advocate, we are seeing more crime, more disharmony and an economy that fails more and more.
Perhaps fair competition is what it should be about (not dividing the rewards to those who aren't effective or contributing)
More people enslaved today than anytime in history.
How do we help people suffering now, today?!
We freed them and stopped the trade and finally finished paying the bill for that jn 2015. The British taxpayer has paid enough and we're still handing out money around the world.
The thing with reparations tho is I never benefitted from slavery? Do I have to pay?

When we banned slavery (and were the first to do it in a way that lasted) we spent a fortune hunting down slavers and trying to put a stop to the trade. With that in mind, if the commonwealth nations would like to pay us reparations for the cost incurred in doing so we would be most grateful.
Besides, we already paid these nations their reparations. We paid for the slaves. That were sold to us. By the government. Of the nation. What, do they want us to pay twice? Seems a little messed up if you ask me.

A historian writes. We paid for the slaves. Priceless

If Starmer wants to hand Reform a million votes I'm all for it lol.
Its not down to me to pay them a penny. Especially as they're all now living in nice house and not mud huts

@@pipins3616
In a debate or conversation, when you say "no one agrees with you" instead of "I don't agree with you," you're engaging in argumentum ad populum, also known as an appeal to popularity or bandwagon fallacy.
The difference between the two statements is:
"No one agrees with you": This is an appeal to the consensus of others (whether true or not) to support your point.
