One of the biggest contributors to losing balance in my experience is when either the follower or the lead look at the floor. Your head weighs on average 10ib and by the time you have tilted it 60% (chin on chest) it now weighs 60lb. Add that in with the points you have raised it can come as no surprise balance is lost. So eyes up people the floor will always be there

I agree! Too many people look down and lose their axis. =)

I guess looking down often results from a previous confusion. And since step size problems may result from timing problems, it might well be a trance-like follower mindset that we seek in this context :-) Like shutting off mind processes trying to interpret moves, and only react in good proportion to the lead, right next to the moment it is felt. I know it is a challenge from the few times I tried to follow :-)

Actually those are good tips to improve the balance.
But even if I do all of that, I will keep losing balance if i get in imbalance.
In my experience, the main reason I lose balance is when my partner put some power/craft in her moves.
When we are moving there are some points in our movement line which are weak to resist a craft in a specific direction. If my partner put craft in her moves that could cause the imbalance.
Avoiding early steps as you mention can help the leader to keep in balance. Nevertheless Being lite in the movement will take the dance to a different level. Being lite in the moves that include even the fast moves.

Yes, we should always try to be light. Maybe you can try to be a bit closer to your partner in the moves where you get out of balance? It can help a lot. Most things become easier. =)
