    I'd try to put up some grow lights in there, your figs will come out amazing, much better than filtered natural light alone. You can mimic California conditions in there if you do so, and you'll be rewarded with the sweetest, jammiest figs you've ever eaten. Already a great looking set up though.

      Dr. J sounds like an interesting idea. Maybe I'll try that if I get solar power. Trying to be low tech and low cost. We get some pretty amazing figs already. One challenge is rodents, will solve that before adding more complexity and more fruit for them to eat!

      Thanks for your interest in our Figloo. Actually, the person I rent the greenhouse from just planted Cherry and apricot trees in there, and the figs will stay as understory trees for awhile as the cherry's develop and then be taken out. Mainly because I'm no longer there and the owner wants to transition to cherry's

    I hope this video ends up as a post on Ourfigs. As a fig enthusiast myself, somewhat obsessed with winter fig protection in Zone 6b CT, I have to say I am very impressed with your results. I mean, the harvest you're getting off of the proven winners (Florea, RdB, St. Rita etc) is great enough, but to have an Adriatic fig ripening in upstate NY with not adding any heat source...WOW. I have a number of figs in-ground on my small channel, and your figs are certainly ripening before mine, which I assume has to do with all of those warmer spring days you have in the greenhouse, plus you're getting that extra heat in the autumn. I have a 12X20 unheated greenhouse, and my middle bed is slightly unproductive, so I'm thinking now to use your system. How far do you have your trees spaced because I'm wondering if I can get away with 2 trees? Also, Paradise Lot was a huge inspiration for my garden that I started back in 2012. Thank you for sharing! I have been curious about the results of your figloo.

      In CT 6b myself! North Branford.. just started some espaliered figs in the hoop house.. Planning on giving them just enough heat to make it through the winter (propane heater).. fingers crossed!

    Impressive figgery! Do you weigh / record your fig yield? I am curious to know your annual estimated/measured yield per square foot

      Thanks for asking. I do not record yield numbers. I would say it took 5 years to start getting marketable yields although we mostly eat the fruit at home or gave some away. I'd say this year on average from 6 trees ripening at different times 12 fruit 4 times a week for 8 weeks? Keep in mind this was a drought year, I didn't water much and had some rodents stealing fruit. I think with irrigation and no rodent might have doubled production... Super low maintenance really just uncovering in the spring and recovering in the fall and some pruning

    How long do they hay bales last?

    • @FoodForestFarm
      @FoodForestFarm  Рік тому +2

      Surprisingly long time if you don't irrigate often... I put a little layer of hay on top of the original bales in places to create a flat edge each fall
